How did you learn?
sal_vager replied to skipper8472's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Trial and lots of error mostly, just seeing what worked and what didn't and trying to get higher each time, then trying to get a better orbit each time. I'm a good pilot now even though I don't bother with the mathematics behind orbiting, practice enough and you just get a feel for it -
This is due to the way craft are made in KSP, you can't have two decouplers attaching to the same thing, such as the top and bottom of a booster. Instead we have to use struts to secure the booster to the other decoupler, when the decouplers are activated they will both push the booster away though

On Orbital Missiles(don't judge)
sal_vager replied to firerider521's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
You'd need some kind of targeting assist for this, that'd know what your missile was capable of and could give you a reticle, you might get lucky if you set a manoeuvre node that gives you a 0.0 separation and use the blur crosshair to aim, and if your target is large enough. Really though I think any space based missile would need it's own thrusters and guidance, as otherwise what you are trying to do is more like a submarine torpedo and a firing solution than an Apache with unguided rockets -
I think you need to update your version of KSP taiiat, those tanks are no longer in use
-
The old versions in that thread didn't have viruses so don't worry, it was the patcher being erroneously flagged as a potential virus as it was an .exe that could download files from the net. I can't find the old thread, do you have a link?

Very nice challenge, well thought out, good writing and a decent level of difficulty, well done I suggest people pop the persistence file in their scenario's folder as it makes it easy to restart, in fact I have changed it's name and added the title and description, you can get it here, and you can even add it to your thread if you want soranno It should go in saves\scenarios

Construct a space port in space
sal_vager replied to senoiurkabls's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
If this happens it's usually a good sign that your challenge needs work, or at least update your opening post with your own space port in space -
The Linux compatibility thread!
sal_vager replied to sal_vager's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
Yeah, that tutorial is broken and is not needed to progress in the game, in fact that tutorial is pretty bad and doesn't really teach you how to build a decent craft. It misses out on decouplers, parachutes, everything really. Try the sandbox mode, if you still have this issue there, then you have a problem and you should try deleting your settings.cfg then starting KSP with LC_ALL=C ./KSP.x86 -
Welcome to the community ReptilianGameplays Good luck on getting to orbit, it's not a small thing but it is essential, being able to orbit will open up the whole game. This thread might help you out (click the blue text)

Spaceplane SAS Problem
sal_vager replied to Gamer217's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
There's not a lot of control authority on that craft, I think you need some canards -
Balancing a shuttle
sal_vager replied to Pixel of Life's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
KSP doesn't really support Space Shuttle style launches, sorry, there simply isn't enough gimballing in the engines and there isn't the throttle control we need. It can be done as I've seen it, but it's usually an ugly hack with extra engines hidden on the main tank or a counterweight of some kind. -
Another "rocket doesn't track" problem.
sal_vager replied to EmanonP's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Actually I think this is due to drag, the tanks mass means it has more drag (the KSP drag model is strange) If I remember correctly, when the tank is the right way round it has the lowest drag, every degree off to the side though and the drag goes up till it reaches maximum (backwards) That'd explain why it's fine one way and crud the other. -
Unable to select crew hatch
sal_vager replied to ammonia_ocean's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
This is a common Mac bug, unfortunately Unity4 has issues with OS X Leopard, I heard Lion is not effected but I can't confirm that, and I don't know if Unity will fix this and other issues for Leopard. The workaround is to use windowed mode and click on your desktop before the hatch, but even that is not reliable, maybe someone can make a plugin to EVA any Kerbal on a craft? -
Jool is a gas giant, you aren't supposed to be able to land on those, there's the small matter of copious amounts of air pressure and lack of actual ground. You spent a lot of time thinking of this challenge but no time actually testing it yourself, sorry but I have to close this one.

Conte_Vincero's Kerbal Racing Challenge
sal_vager replied to Conte_Vincero's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Conte_Vincero, try making the persistent.sfs into a scenario file (maybe with a banner too), take a look at the in-game scenario files to see how it works, it's really simple Also make sure it does work on 0.19.1! -
Sorry but the scoring system is completely lacking on this one, is it all down to your judgement or what? And the restrictions on modules? C'mon we want some freedom to build! This challenge needs a rethink, don't forget the challenge guidelines at the top of the challenge section as well Closing!

Interesting challenge but it seems Boffinbox has won, the only thing you can do after his attempt is use a tiny probe and an Ion engine like zarakon says. And a pic of a orbit with zero difference in Ap and Pe would be a little boring now. See if you can think of a way to spice up the next challenge Rjhere Closing!

"No mods except these mods" You really need to think on your presentation a bit more Also lets see your attempt
