RealKerbal3x replied to Skylon's topic in Science & Spaceflight
A fluke is 'I did that, but I have no idea how, so I can't do it again'. Every one of these test flights gather terabytes of data on what the vehicle is doing from liftoff to touchdown. They know exactly what every component of SN15 was doing throughout the entire flight. It literally can't be a fluke. -

If they got the data they wanted from it (which they did, since they were able to recover it), then it's not a fluke. They can see exactly what happened and therefore should be able to repeat it. Plus, I think reusability has been well and truly proven with Falcon 9. B1051 has flown 10 times and that reusability know-how has undoubtedly transferred to the Starship program. -
Looks like a Kerbodyne ADTP-2-3 to me.

Procedural wings, like them or hate them?
RealKerbal3x replied to a topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
I'm generally not a fan of procedural parts (I prefer the Lego approach with a set of prefab parts), but I do like procedural wings. The current wing system is frustrating to work with to say the least. -

Do they come up with a 'missing part modules' (or something similar) message when you try to load them? Because in that case you can just hit OK and they should load fine.

The current landing legs aren't a problem for landing on prepared surfaces like the landing pad. They only really need to solve that problem once they're landing on the Moon or Mars, but I expect they'll have some better legs ready before then. -

Maybe they could bring OCISLY or JRTI out to SN20's mid-Pacific landing zone and use it to transport it back after it's been fished out of the water. -

Yeah, the document I posted above says Kauai. -

A new FCC document gives us an idea of how the first Starship orbital flight test will proceed: I guess they're going to be attempting booster ocean landings until the 'catch it with the tower' system is ready to go. Landing Starship in the middle of the Pacific also seems sensible given that the chance of RUD on this first re-entry is quite high, though I'm not sure how or even if they plan to recover it. -

RealKerbal3x replied to Nightside's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Why do I feel like SpaceX sending an uncrewed Starship test mission to Mars before Artemis astronauts walk on the Moon is entirely possible at this point? There's every chance that the technologies required for Starship to do that are ready by that time - and the date of a crewed return to the Moon seems to be steadily slipping. -
It probably went down something like this: Bezos: Hi this is Jeff Bezos please come work on my suborbital rocket Shotwell: Jeff who?

Well, SpaceX does exactly that with Raptor and the engines seem to be working great. As I said before, maybe it's time for everyone else to start building engines that are less delicate and bespoke and more ruggedised. It'll certainly save them the cost of all of that custom tooling. -

When they're no longer bespoke, single-use machines that have to be built, transported and installed using highly specialised tooling and vehicles. Raptor is already eschewing a lot of that - it's the first full-flow staged combustion cycle engine to leave the test stand and yet it's transported on a flatbed and installed with a scissor lift. -

Because, as you said, developing an entirely new engine is expensive and time consuming. They already have one of the highest-performance engines ever built, why not use it? Plus, a common design for booster and ship means production is more streamlined and engines can be interchangeable if necessary. The large number of engines is also great for multiple-engine-out scenarios (as long as you don't have horrific quality control a la N1, and Raptor reliability seems to be steadily improving). -
I've heard about BO trying to poach SpaceX engineers, but the literal COO? Damn.

They might do some higher-altitude hops to test supersonic descent, but seeing as very few components for SN18 and 19 have been spotted (compared to most of the tank section for SN20), it's more likely that they focus attention on booster testing and then head straight for orbit. That way they can start actually delivering payloads while continuing to test EDL. -

I suppose all of his efforts in the field of green energy (solar panels, batteries, electric cars) don't matter. As mentioned above, Starship is, first and foremost, a reusable launch vehicle. Going to Mars is only one of its capabilities. -

Building on a few kilometres of marshland isn't 'screwing earth'. There's absolutely no reason why we can't explore new worlds while still protecting this one. -

I guess we should just stop all space exploration efforts then, because no matter where we launch or build infrastructure, we're going to upset someone.
