Well, I don't speak Deutschekerb myself. Knowing that we sometimes see "gut" and sometimes "guten" as in "guten tag", I wanted to make sure I had the correct declension so I Google translated the phrase "find a good use for it" and received back "Finden Sie eine gute Verwendung für sie" Anyway, that's what Wernher meant. Unless he didn't. Lol, excellent. You may have hit upon the one and only provocation that would make our pacifist Kerbals turn to violence.

The Saga of Emiko Station - Complete
Mister Dilsby replied to Just Jim's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Oh, poor Jim. I'll play you a sad song on my 1600 ton, 800 part count violin. -
Eek! Or should I say, 'gleek'? Great to have you back, good job refreshing our memories with the events involving monoliths and Kerbin, I'll have to read up on the archives so I don't miss a trick going forward

I was going to go a little farther with the story before ending the chapter, but I got to this point and it seemed a nice way to close, so here we are! Now I'm not going to try to hide it--mulch WILL begin to impinge the forward compressor blades in the next chapter. As this will require a good deal of setup work on my part, pages will appear with much lower frequency than they have this week.

I'm (Hopefully) going to publish my stories!
Mister Dilsby replied to DarkOwl57's topic in The Lounge
My stuff is actually easier to host than you think--however...I do not at this time wish for any content created by me and posted on this Forum to be duplicated or transmitted, in whole or in part, by any means without my express written consent. Not that I think you would do so, @Plecy75, but seeing the way this thread is going I wanted to make that perfectly clear -
I will; that will probably happen beginning of next chapter. Plan is to send the Jooldiver. Yes--we got Shores and Sagen Sea. I know there are a few others, but I think it's about time to wrap things up, the chapter is already pretty long.

Looks like @Deddly called it! Right after landing the Skimmeroo but before posting the comic where that happened, I tried a bunch of ways to lift off (in "simulation" mode, naturally ). This was the only one that worked. Going to rocket mode does get the ship going about seventy, but the intakes seem to fall off before I can get the nose up. I actually hit on the "dive and breach" method somewhat accidentally--I had been poking the nose down to try and get the trailing edges of the wings out of the water for more speed, hit "W" a little to hard and went under. On noticing how it popped back up, on the next attempt I did it on purpose and it worked Once I knew I could get off Laythe, I reloaded the "landed" quicksave and played it all through pretty much as you saw in the comic. Okay then... assuming Bob and Tedus get back to orbit (SPOILER: they do) and reach Intrepid (NOT A SPOILER: I haven't done that yet, but they have 800dV left in the tank so yeah), then I will have successfully put crew on the surface of every Joolian moon and returned them to the carrier--leaving nothing behind other than flags, footprints, some gaseous products of combustion, and Clauselle's kpad. Even Tylo was an ISRU/SSTO. I feel pretty darn good about that

A Thread for Writers to talk about Writing
Mister Dilsby replied to Mister Dilsby's topic in KSP Fan Works
Yes, that's exactly how you do it--I didn't mean to imply it has to be ALL "said"s, what really sticks out is when the author can't get out of his own way--maybe by always using "said", maybe by never using "said"--such that the speech tags lose their transparency and steal focus from the actual dialogue. How much to do? How little to do? If anyone could explain that, it wouldn't be an art. -
A Thread for Writers to talk about Writing
Mister Dilsby replied to Mister Dilsby's topic in KSP Fan Works
I do prefer to write that way when I'm writing a text-only story, myself. The action and the speech move together, naturally. It can't be overdone, as you rightly point out. I think a good guideline is that when there is action going on, let the actions provide the speech tags--when people are just talking "he said" is the action, and that's what you go with. Otherwise you have a lot of superfluous contrivance like What I hate hate HATE is when it's written such that the speech tags should all be "he said"s, but the author read somewhere that saying "he said" is wrong, so you get: -
All right, science update! Skimmeroo is beyond this point in gameplay, but I loaded up some of the quicksaves to get us some 2HOT readings. Here they are immediately after landing, several hundred meters offshore. Position is shown in the KE window. Note that I had to wait several minutes for the reading to settle, when I loaded the save it was at about 260K but was climbing rapidly, settling near 286. (13C) And here's the reading with the ship landed and Bob still stuck in the science bay. Again it took a little while to settle: the reading when I first loaded the quicksave was just above 295K. So, it seems that at least as of 1.1.3 the wiki is correct--daytime water temperature near the equator about 13C at sea level, daytime air temperature 20C. Comic update later, and more temperature readings a bit after that

Say Hello to The Rep Grand Group! [07/19/16 UPDATE!]
Mister Dilsby replied to Endersmens's topic in Kerbal Network
Wow, you guys are WAY too nice--I responded to @DarkOwl57 as I did because, well, he's writing fiction in Mission Reports, and he's read and repped my stuff there, and he's been on the "Thread for Writers", so if he's still asking "how did you get 11k rep" I don't really have a straight answer to give him And @5thHorseman, glad to have such a legendary personage as a new reader! I hope you read the Duna and Eve books in the order given by the Imgur links on the OPs of those threads, as there is some overlap between the end of the first book and the beginning of the second. It all gets straightened out eventually, and sorry for any confusion Maybe we'll see you on the Jool Odyssey thread, which is reaching its Thrilling Conclusion! And regarding @Red Iron Crown's truly modest statement on his own rep--you don't get nearly enough credit for your 'volume'. I have the luxury of posting what I want when I want to, while you have to spend your hours unglamorously moving threads around and reminding people to mind their manners, no doubt while receiving all kinds of hate PMs and attempts at amateur lawyering. I couldn't--no, I wouldn't do what I do here without you and the other mods doing what you do.- 929 replies

But the Jooldiver doesn't have a seat, so I think it's no spoiler if I say that I do not plan to make that scene (or any other part of Dr. Strangelove) relevant to this Mission Report any time soon

Say Hello to The Rep Grand Group! [07/19/16 UPDATE!]
Mister Dilsby replied to Endersmens's topic in Kerbal Network
I'm not really sure. I was active in the whole "Save the ROUND-8" movement a while back, and before that I ran a really popular challenge involving a jump ramp on Minmus. So I guess I must have gotten a few thousand rep for each of those posts, yeah. I haven't been keeping track.- 929 replies

The trouble with both of these ideas is that the mission spec calls for a temperature reading--which means we have to get a 2HOT Thermometer up there, crewed or otherwise. You know the available craft: Skimmeroo can't reach, Qwammer would be VERY high risk, and the rover can't swim. A solo Kerbal--swimming or otherwise--would just be a waste of time

Um... well if I just said I don't have the fuel to fly there, I certainly am not going to go by jetboat... ...and I'm pretty sure the rover is not going to work... ...hm, you seem very excited about this so I hope you're not disappointed when I say that by "ooh rah" I meant, "have Sarge shoot the remaining Jooldiver into the polar region, since it's fully rated for atmospheric entry and landing and there really isn't anything else foreseeable we can use it for."

I'll get a temp reading before Bob and Tedus leave the surface! Though I am not sure about getting to the polar regions. No way the Skimmeroo carries enough oxidant to plane change from equatorial orbit, land above 63 deg, get back to orbit and plane change AGAIN to get back to the ship. Might work better to enter equatorial, fly north on jets, land, fly back to equator and orbit from there...but I doubt I could do all that without burning up too much LF to reach space. So that's a question I will have to answer on another mission... unless... ooh! I think i might have an idea! Or should I say... 'ooh rah'?

Right, I had the same thought regarding salt which is why I had Bob throw in the line about "dissolved gases". Maybe there's so much sulfur dioxide or whatever else is in the air that makes it unbreathable that it's seeped into the oceans, enough to lower the overall density *waves hands*. I really hadn't considered any other options-- --huh. Huh! Well...I suppose we won't know for sure what it's made of until Bob gets his samples back to Intrepid for a full analysis.

And now he's out! But it looks like he's going back in again! WHAT WILL HAPPEN?!! So yes, Skimmeroo does sit low. It's not THAT much lower than on Kerbin, but it's apparently enough to make a difference. Of course the first thing I did after landing was run some "simulations" to make sure I could get back to orbit before making the landing canon. I found that I could not in fact get to takeoff speed the "normal" way (if you want to see an "abnormal" way that actually works, stay tuned ). I think this is due to a few factors: lower buoyancy wets more surface area of the ship, increasing drag (observed) local 'water' has higher viscosity, increasing drag (a hypothesis, not tested) lower air density requires higher takeoff speed This might be a great topic for a masters thesis on extrakerbinal hydro/aerodynamics

A Thread for Writers to talk about Writing
Mister Dilsby replied to Mister Dilsby's topic in KSP Fan Works
Do any of us really need to gurgle? And yet, we do... One nice thing about the graphic format is that we get to use word balloons rather than "he said" speech tags, and the pictures take care of scene-setting. That means that the only words on the page are the characters' voices, direct to the audience--which not only makes them easier to hear, it forces strong distinctions. I really notice this when I read page aloud to @Nimzo Kerman. All the characters have different voices, and I don't just mean their regional accents: there is pitch, and cadence, and word choice. If Dad is doing his job right, the kids should be able to tell which character is speaking without seeing the page at all. -
A Thread for Writers to talk about Writing
Mister Dilsby replied to Mister Dilsby's topic in KSP Fan Works
Inner speech can have a lot of meanings. I took it to mean what I perceived @KSK was talking about with 'silent voice'--that is, the character's voice inside the author's head. @Ten Key referenced an 'inner monologue' in his head, in his characters' voices. But, inner speech meaning 'a character's inner thoughts given verbatim in the story', yes that's a useful tool. In fact, I would say that the nature of KSP fiction requires it due to the time spent traveling. So @adsii1970, your six day Minmus trip represents more than just time to fill: it's an opportunity to naturally get across to the reader any exposition that needs to get done on characters, craft, or other story developments that don't fit in the usual journal entries. That's how (and when) I typically use my 'interludes'. -
A Thread for Writers to talk about Writing
Mister Dilsby replied to Mister Dilsby's topic in KSP Fan Works
Inner speech is an incredibly important tool. It works after the fact, too--quite often I'll have a line in mind in my head, and then it goes into the word balloon and I think "wait, there's no way Bob would ever say it like that", and then Bob tells me what the line should be. Of course, for it to work you have to have that character fully formed enough to have developed a strong and consistent voice. One thing I've tried to do over the course of the Kerbfleet saga is to have those voices develop and change as the characters' relationships with each other develop and grow. This is especially important when you've latched onto a key characteristic early to cement the character's personality with the reader. Good recent example for me is Bob Kerman. He was famous in Eve: Order Zero for screaming about 'concerns' all the time and second-guessing everyone's decisions. I think anyone who reads my thread can duplicate that basic voice well enough to write some elementary Kerbfleet Bob dialogue. It's predictable, which makes it accessible--but of course that can also be cliché. So, I figured that by the time he got in a cockpit with Tedus again they should both have grown a bit. Bob softens when Tedus opens up to him a little--only to transfer his righteous ire to Bill two pages later
