Don't hate me, but I got the feeling you are having too much fun writing to actually make any sense. They got a very stable business around KSP, for everything we know, there is just no point in any of this. We got already a good explanation, the logistics. No point in trying to analyse Squad as a business (which we don't actually know much about). Steam shouldn't differentiate. Since you can start KSP without steam, it should be no hindrance at all. Tbh, you could also just log into your friends account on your pc and then copy the download somewhere on to your hard drive (in that case you dont get updates tho). Just mind you need email confirmation for his account to be used on your pc.

When you build a big post around a singular statement, please at least explain it first. I'm not really seeing how getting a smaller percentage of a sum creates more revenue.

It's not that easy. I'm actually using the sharing in-house. There are three huge limitations: 1. You can not play shared games in offline mode. 2. You can not play shared games from an account as long as the real owner is playing one of his games. 3. Shared accounts need steamgard protection. Basically you have to be online and the guy lending the game can't play any steam game as long as you access shared software. So it's not like you just copy games onto another account or anything. Also can't do it with strangers, because you need to do additional steamguard verification for every pc, which would be a huge security risk doing it outside of a very close circle of family or friends.

Can I have a look into your crystal ball?
-
Well, literally uploading a copy into the interwebs for people to download is indeed something you shouldn't do, be it a private link or not.^^'

That's why the stable is considered the 'up to date version', even though there is a half broken pre-release beta that is technically newer.
-
Gotta be honest: While I'm planning to deliver feedback, the first thing I've thought was 'YAY, an early crack at the actual release'. That said, I feel i've got a bit of a feel how the release is gonna play anyway, played lots of pre-release-, beta- and heavily modded games. A 2 week pre-release beta shouldn't be that shocking, and it's not like i'm really expecting to keep saves. Gonna sandbox that stuff. Srsly, I've played Total War games at release*. There is nothing in the world of games that'll ever shock me. :> *not TW Empire tho, that was completely broken for me the first ~3 months

@BrutalRIP, that's actually not correct. 'Up to date' is a term used for stable versions. Well yeah, but technical definitions and practical reality can very well differ. Even a lot of big companies mostly used copy-protection to satisfy shareholders, (and basically excrements on stakeholders in the meanwhile), and later platforms like origins/uplay/bnet are more about having a direct line to their customers than to implement DRM as copy protection (customer retention). Otherwise I don't really want to continue that discussion much more, either. Squad is clever - and respectful - enough to their customers as to not implement DRM anyway. Not to mention DRM would basically break the ability to have multiple installs, crushing the games mod scene, so you shouldn't even worry about it.

First, all EULA's are of questionable meaning in the first place. Especially european law often outrules invalid pieces of EULAs, Steam itself gets regularly under fire by european courts. If you buy a retail game in germany, that EULA is even invalid by definition. Yeah, rules are there for a reason. But you are ignoring why they are there and just take them word by word. Even in court, laws have to be interpreted. Otherwise, I really dislike the line of thinking in the latter part of your post. That's nothing but fearmongering before the menace of piracy. Btw, even the word 'piracy' itself is already loaded language, because it has literally nothing to do what torrent sites do, hence sites like pirate-bay took the name and made a joke out of it. All coming from industrials trying to scare people, and you are just citing that nonsense. Like the notion of someone talking about lending a game to a friend will have dire consequences for a product. That's propaganda level nonsense. Everybody knows the sites and where they can get to download games anyway, broadband internet is everywhere, yet games still sell better than ever before. Pretending the mention in a forum would bring an end to KSP and DRM being the only salvation is utterly absurd. KSP doesn't have DRM in the first place because it's a) 95% useless and b) will only hurt their sales, because DRM only affects people that bought their game in the first place.
-
Man, seeing some of you write one could believe lending a game to a friend is a capital crime. Stop being so childish and think for yourself: When @John FX want's to get the pre-release version from his friend, it won't hurt anyone, he already got a license from buying KSP for himself anyway, and assuming anything else is just ridiculous. Steam even has a family sharing system with which you can allow others to download your steam library games. Also, 'piracy' isn't a possible charge. If anything, it's copyright infringement, which often enough doesn't even apply in close circles. Who is even surposed to charge anyone in that regard?

Squadcast Summary (2016/03/03) - Mod it till it squeals edition
Temeter replied to MiniMatt's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Well, it is the platform that made it viable to release games purely with integrated DRM and made region locks on pc easier than ever before, so it's not just a good thing. That said, doesn't make much difference for a digital game like KSP: You have to log into a service anyway, either KSP store or steam, and the latter is more comfortable when you got to use it for other stuff anyway. Buying is more attractive on store because more revenue gets to the devs tho. -
What does 1.1 mean in terms of part balance?
Temeter replied to Temeter's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Yeah, I've heard about asteroid day stuff being adapted and added to the main game, that's what made me wonder about the other parts of the game. I think there was something in a devnote about squad doing further balancing work. -
Kerbal Space Program 1.1 Hype Train Thread.
Temeter replied to Whirligig Girl's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Real trains dont give no loves. btw, I kinda love the forums censorship software <3 -
Did we already get some news if there are changes to the balance, especially around engines? Last patches changed a lot, creating an interesting dynamic centered around Career, and less around sandbox. E.g. early 1.25 engines being less efficient, but cheap engines, 2.5m stuff creating a spike in cost, and aerospike/ssme-alike becoming expensive but efficient late-game equipment.
-
Sorry to break it to you, but this kind of stuff, including the theories, are usually just total repurposed bovine waste. Space isn't that easy, there is a reason why e.g. SpaceX planned to do at least 30+ test flights of their near finished dragon 2 capsule before even thinking of sending people to low orbit. As for sending big stuff to low orbit, e.g. every single SLS launch was projected to cost US$500 million in 2012. Program cost is projected to be ~7 Billion, and that's only until 2018. You won't even get people to close mars without billions of dollars, access to decades of know-how, and strong political backing.
-
Well, you could download the U5 game one time, and then only go for updates afterwards. Issue here is ofc that you need a much bigger infrastructure over a longer timeframe than usual, ergo costing personal hours and money.
-
People who joined back in 2011: are any of you still here?
Temeter replied to Panichio's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Always! <3 -
Well, it's pretty much the mod disabling itself. So it is a kinda big issue when tring to use RVE. ^^

Squadcast Summary (2016/03/03) - Mod it till it squeals edition
Temeter replied to MiniMatt's topic in KSP1 Discussion
KSP's steam version doesn't have any DRM. >_> You can literally copy/paste the KSP directory, put it onto a torrent on piratebay, and there you go. Ergo there is no copy protection, digital or not. Eh, it's usually just a few people who love conspiracies. They gonna get bored in a few days. -

Well yeah, but those bugs are your problem then ~ -

Didn't watch it yet, but WTF for real? Trailer getting more and more repurposed bovine waste... -

Hey, we'll just go in first so you don't have stuff blowing up in your face. -
Pls do. I basically constantly have the issue and this mod is sooo beatiful!

Btw, what's up with the cryo-engines performance on Eve? They only start working around a few kilometer height, and a volcano only reaches 300 ISP around 6.5km. Found those numbers in Kerbal Engineer, but eve on-site testing confirmed the results. Small bug or feature? Really enjoying the mod. I've been a bit critical of the balancing at the beginning, but the inclusion of boil-off+increased performance really created a cool dynamic! Also meshes similarly well in the Kerbal Atomics pack. So thanks for that! I find it's interesting how the current inclusion of cryogenic engines and boiloff adds a bit more realistic depth to KSP, while still fitting the games' theme, the complexity is very well balanced out by the additional efficience. To me, this is one of the very few feature-heavy mods that could be well implemented into vanilla. edit: Seems like the nuclear engines have a very similar low eve altitude fall off. Guess the obvious reason would be the thrust curves not being adjusted for below kerbin sea level?

I feel KSP's fun factor suffers the more realistic it becomes
Temeter replied to Temeter's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Well, it teached me and a lot of other people how basic rocketry, orbital mechanics and interplanetary exploration works, which is more than almost any other game could do, all the while still being fun and accesible. That's already a lot, even if you could it much more realistic. Take it this way: Realism Overhaul is amazing in it's own way, but you really need a lot of experience to even start with it. Even after hundreds of hours in KSP, RO has challenging concepts like ullage/ignition management and boil-off, which really force you to plan on another level. It's nearly impossible to get into it without experience, which makes RO different to stock.
