In my opinion the .21.1 SAS was the best, it always held attitude both on panes and rockets. But the current one just sucks... It shuts off when flying a plane, and doesn't hold attitude when turning. Remember how the SAS is supposed to let you turn one axis, but still hold attitude on the other two axis? It's doesn't do that anymore, it just turns off automatically.

Smaller rockets are better...

I typically try to avoid a debris cluttered Kerbin Orbit, so I usually just jettison them on a crash course.

The "upgrading saves" thing sounds like the message that was produced when .21 broke saves, but Harvester made a save updater. Did you change the version number in the persistence fie? It should be .23.
