What irks you the most about movie space travel?
vetrox replied to Tex's topic in Science & Spaceflight
FTL view screen? -
Put a few hundred pieces of debris into orbit and see what happens ;-) @OP The rest of the specs for your computer would be good to know as well. KSP isnt the most graphically demanding game about. its all on the processor currently. More gigahertz=more fps

What irks you the most about movie space travel?
vetrox replied to Tex's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Theres the odd think that irks me (i love the word irk btw). Although normally its not the physics that bothers me. Admittidly ksp has changed my perception of sci fi some what I am still able to enjoy a movie. I enjoyed star wars pre ksp and i enjoy it now. The only difference now is I have to imagaine all the fighters have a magical science fiction device that magically negates alot of G effects and allows them to hover over planets at great distances. What does bother me is my own knowledge on a movie thats marketing itself as realistic. I really enjoyed gravity but i was still screaming (with my mind) about the debris coming back every 10 minutes or w/e it was because that is not how it happens but it was still a great movie. If i hadnt played ksp i wouldnt have known and would have enjoyed it just as much I can still play all my beloved sci fi games without being annoyed. My new fandangled ksp knowledge does mean i know a little bit more but its no different from watching an action movie (hiding behind a car makes me immune to bullets...shooting a car once makes it explode) Shooting barrells that are filled with something highly explosive (that just happened to be scattered around a compound) explode when u shoot them. The normal "movie" things bother me, regardless ie: the obligatory romance plot. The best type of romance plot is the one where someone dies. Sometimes...just sometimes...i wish the badies would win...or reach a stalemate or one where the protagonist dies! If there is ever a halo movie it would be amaze balls if the master chief died at the end. Nothing like the emotional response from a character you love dies ( ***SPOILER*** just like when sgt johnson dies in halo 3***SPOILER*** ) However after saying all this. There is nothing better than a day round your best mates house doing NOTHING BUT picking out things that are wrong in movies. You cant have an interesting and entertaining movie without cutting some reality and when u specifically watch a movie (any movie not just a sci fi) do you notice by how much! EDIT: My favourite sci fi movie so far is district 9. I dont remember having a hard time with any of the sci fiey stuff on that one. -
Been playing other games whilst waiting for 0.23 (i burned myself out on .22 so am having a breather) I keep twitching everytime another game in my steam updates
-
A screenshot would be really usefull here. Press f1 in game to take a screenshot. Screenshots are located in a screenshots folder where you installed ksp. (if using steam its something like C:\Programfilesx86/steam/steamapps/common/ksp/screenshots) Upload to an image hosting website such as imgur or photobucket (you will have to sign up to them first. Dont worry, its free) and post a link to it here. EDIT: Is there a sticky on how to post up a screenshot?

OMG MY STEAM IS DOWNLOADING AN UPDATE FOR...oh wait never mind its one of my other games thats getting updated My brain keeps giving me doses of adreneline every time my steam starts updating a game. I CANT TAKE IT ANY MORE!!!!!

Nothing like a classic

Everyone will say different things as its definatley preferance thing. Also depends on what games you will play. I use a razer imperitor as the side buttons are nicely placed for me plus alot of razer stuff has 4g sensors (posh name for a combined optical and laser sensor) My only advice is to try out an optical mouse and a laser mouse. I really cant stand laser sensors as they still pick up movement when you lift the mouse from the pad.

So many to choose from. Halo 2 (large protion of my youth dedicated to) Morrowind (still the best elder scrolls in my opinion) Dune 2 (the start of genre) Total anihilation (first game with hundreds/thousands of units per team) Xcom (the old one not the crummy remake with the exception of xenonauts) Too many to choose from

Very few Space "Simulators" as its a very niche market and orbiter fills most of it. Universe sandbox is an interesting on. A good one to try is space engine (free) A quick google search on these will answer all your questions

What game was it? Does it say this before you purchase the game?

Juat discovered that holding the middle mouse wheel zooms in. So i can land on a planet and pretend to have a telescope! -
As i've never been a star trek fan (dont get me wrong I will watch it but im just your average viewer) As an average viewer standpoint i got to say I enjoyed Voyager the most. I remember it was one of the few tv shows the whole family would watch once a week. I dont really like ds9 or next gen as i found them a little boring but voyager is very much aimed at the broadest audience possible rather than apealing to sci fi fans. This is obviously personal opinion and will most likely get shot down. What i would like to ask is how people compare the new movies to the old ones (the next gen movies and the originals) I will admit I quite like the originals for some silly reason but the new ones have plenty of lens flare and special effects so simple people like me get to enjoy it

I think this is the wrong attitude to have for new players. The last thing we need when the game is released is thousands of threads stating "this game is too hard I want my 30$ back" I think a diffiulty mechanic would work well in career mode. Sandbox shoul stay as it is (sandbox is as difficult as you want to make it). In career mode difficulty levels would make sense as most people are going to buy the game and start in career mode it makes sense for people dont get overwhelmed by lack of cash etc. I also agree with the "customizable Difficulty". So at the start of the career you decide how hard it is. Starting cash, science gain, available parts etc. Theres not alot you can do without screwing up the game however. You shouldnt be able to pick "EZ mode" and have every engine with a surface isp of a bajillion and twr of 56. Maybe things like re entry damage, realisic aero dynamics, scale of the star system ect. You should be able to turn these on and off at will (yes you can do it with mods but not all people buying a fully released game will want to mod it) EDIT Although I havent played flight simulator this is the sort of thing i was trying suggest

Well i spent some more time on this. Its great! a good little time filler. I like the way you can alter the stars and how they look! Anyway this is the only nice shot i've taken so far. I love how planets far from their star are actually dark! The only disapointing thing with this pic the rings on te planet aren't visible I also came across this....I think i've seen this planet before but not sure where -

After reading this thread I immediatley downloaded this piece of software...and what a great piece of kit. Our own solar system looks pretty darn amazing! Some real fancy stuff to see and do. The first thing i did after getting used to it and exploring our own sol system was to goto the edge of the universe and find a nice galaxy to explore! I dont have a screenshot to hand but found one with some planets pretty damn close to a star! Some amzing graphics if this is used in a game in the next decade then i will be a happy man! -
in 9 situations out of 10 gaming laptops arent worth the price. Saying that though my alienware suits me to the ground. Yes it was expensive and yes I could get a tower pc of same spec and half the price. BUT! Its ideal because I take it everywhere. Round friends houses, it goes to work. I like to play on the sofa in my living room. Plus nowadays you can upgrade it like you would a normal desktop. Mine is exactly what I wanted and i bought it for a purpose. Its not underperforming. Its heavy yes but i would hardly say its too heavy as its on my lap all the time and i drive everywhere so i chuck it in the boot of my car. Like i said they are perfect for what they are but you will have to pay extra for it and will need to really decide weather the extra mobility is worth it. The only bad thing about my laptop is the hdd thats mega slow but thats because i havent got round to upgrading. The gpu is a bit dated now (the laptop is 3 years old) but the new graphics card I want is £500. £150 more than the desktop equivilent. Plus my m15x has a very well designed chasis and cools my gpu very well, which is good because the 460m was very slow out of the box and immediatley got overclocked. Unless you will do gaming on the move (by which i mean in other locations, not in the car on the train etc) then a gaming laptop is ideal. But if you end up sitting in one room gaming all the time then theres no point in a laptop.

bahhh, havent had a chance to get my telescope out all year and was hoping to spot this one. Oh well. Plenty of other stuff to look at.

Your total delta v will take your ISP, weight and fuel into account? Maybe i misread your post. However delta v is fairly simple to work out. EDIT:Actually heres a link to all the calculations http://wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/Tutorial:Advanced_Rocket_Design All the info on each specific part IE weight, isp etc is listed alongside each part in ksp.

Ever had troubles with Kessler syndrome? a.k.a 'Gravity'
vetrox replied to Wampa842's topic in KSP1 Discussion
As has been said already. KSP does not simulate any collisions when you are not controlling things. As for the movie gravity. Its just one of those things. Although its innacurate its only us mad science nerds that actually notice it, for a member of joe public it seems like an extremely plausible movie. Heck everyone likes star wars and that couldnt be further from reality. Its like any move. Those who are experts in the movies "field" are going to notice all the innacuracies. Does this mean they wont enjoy it? Im an automotive engineer and the fast and furious franchise (even the early ones) are still an enjoyable watch even with the hordes of stuff that is just "wrong" (manifold overheats so the passenger footwell falls out?) I haevnt seen gravity yet (As i really dont see sandra bullock pulling off that role along with the fact that i cant stand her!) but it looks to be a good'en. The only sci-fi movie i have seen that tries to be as accurate as possible was the europa report and even that has stuff that could be pointed out as wrong due to it still trying to be a movie. EDIT: I've started a new save and have built a station in retrograde direction around kerbin. The rest of the save will be as normal but with an emphasis on taking as much debris up with you (procedural fairings is talented at this as this gives me a minimum of 4 debris with every mission) -
Whenever i get an x game, the first thing i do is build my galactic trade empire and try to monopolise an industry. I find the campaigns boring. I will be playing x4 because i havent played one in a while. I do want a hardcopy however as I like to have the manual as a reference guide for the different ship classes cos i always forget. Whilst I will admit that ksp has ruined almost every science fiction anything i have ever played or watched ever...but The x series were never about the the combat and physics for me. Its all about the trade empire!

So I have a quick question about "global warming"
vetrox replied to vetrox's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I know im not a mod but this will only result in name calling and racism. I was hoping (in vain) that political aspects of this argument would stay away Has there been a paper published for this research? I've pretty much read all i can about climate change over the last week. My next curiosity is the effect of energy drinks on my kidneys. But thats for a different thread. Although I encourage everyone to continue their debates (and its nice to see some sources linked as well) without dissolving into a heated argument I will no longer read this thread as I've had enough and its not a subject im particularly interested in (although all developed populations should be) i was curious about a fact i had read and have had it answered so I wont be reading much more from this thread but thanks to everyone who has contributed -

Well after a quick headscratching session as too why Kerbal alarm clock wasnt working. I finally found that norton was removing kerbalalarmclock.dll as a poential threat. Silly norton. -
So I have a quick question about "global warming"
vetrox replied to vetrox's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Ok lots of good stuff to read still. However is there any chance we could stop calling it "global warming" and instead refer to it as "climate change" I find the term Global warming a bit misleading (even more so after reading some sources linked on here). For some reason its starting to grate on me and the term GW sounds a bit fear monger-ish. Threads starting to get a bit busy now so if you're stating something as fact and are able to link me a source please could you its definatley an interesting subject matter
