So I have a quick question about "global warming"
vetrox replied to vetrox's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Although not outright saying "the world will end" I have seen some news reports (not loads) saying that i could destroy life on earth. Now as Im a muggle I didnt consider extremophiles. I was always under the impression (from only watching the news earlier in life) that global warming=human extinction. I.e if we dont cap our co2 emissions soon earth will not sustain life as soon as [insert arbitrary year here] but they never give a source for me to read the info!Anyway enough of the media and news. I wanted to try and keep them out of it (even if i was the one to bring it up). Another generalisation I have (as do alot of others) is that global warming will cause wild storms, hurricane, snowstorms in africa (ok maybe i made that up) just like in "the day after tomorrow". Could someone point me in the direction of a source (or just tell me) of how global warming would cause this. Like Idobox says, hotter weather = more humidity (if thats how it works) now my basic neanderthal knowledge leads me to believe this will cause us some bonus rain? (you see why alot of people are ignorant of the matter? Im not stupid but my knowledge on this matter is no more than joe publics...well, i have a little more knowledge now) -
Spaceplanes randomly veering off of runway.
vetrox replied to Darkeldar's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
The reasson i have found is that on bigger craft. If stuff wobbles (wings, fuselage etc) then it qill make you veer off everywhere. In the same principle as rocket design, add some struts. Even if its strutting the wings to the fuselage to reduce wobbley wobbley. -
Although this seems an extremeley bias thread (IE everyone will put there favourite down) I will put forward norton. Mainly because I have tried others but I'm so used to norton that i dislike the others. It gets less intrusive each year and (the original readon I got it all those years ago) is norton 360 comes with various usefull tools. Now all these tools are available in other software, however! I'm a fan of keeping everything in one place and able to do everything with one click. My girlfriend swears by AVG which I personally find slow and annoying. I went through a stage of kaspersky but the computer that I put it on really disagreed with it and went on the go slow (not sure if kaspersky issue or computer) Chances are whatever you pick first will be the one you keep forever. Like someone pointed out you will still get a virus or spyware even with the best of the best but you will get alot less of them if you have at least some form of antivirus/antispyware. The one thing that should be on the bottom of most peoples list when looking for antivirus (this is personal opinion btw) is the amount of system resources they need. Even basic laptops (not the bottom of the bottom of last years old range) will have enough power to run a juicy antivirus. Everyone i ask says "dont get norton it uses to much system resources yada yada yada"...yeh maybe if your computer was built in the 90's This is a really usefull tool that norton doesnt have. Although im not against advertisers following my habbits (it makes buying stuff for myself slightly easier sometimes...sometimes) but its most usefull if you like to stream stuff from iffy sites. You know where its all "click here to play" but your not quite sure which one is the real one. Its usefull for getting rid of the fake ones. I managed to install a virus once because i wasnt paying attention (i was trying to download and install something, cant remember what) and didnt have ad block. I just kept clicking "yes" "install" until about the 4th thing i agreed to install and my brain clicked and all i thought was "dammit brain! why u on autopilot!" (fortunatley i made a system restore point the previous day) It just shows even the most vigilant can slip up from time to time.

As with any form of science. You can never truly tell what the off shoots of scientific research are. So many things have been discovered by accident. For all we know this "higgs Field" could lead to a new form of uranium enrichment (total randomness). Proffessor Brian Cox did an extremely interesting documentary on the subject for the BBC. Science Britanicca it was called (its a little patriotic to the brits but theres plenty of fact there)

So I have a quick question about "global warming"
vetrox replied to vetrox's topic in Science & Spaceflight
So far a rational discussion. I'm still reading through and alot is fasinating (even if i do have to go diggin around the internet (not the best place i know) for info) Do you have a source for this? book or internet. Not that exact quote but some source that shows all life wont end as the media would have me think. I'm not doubting you but it would save me diggin around as I have given myself some serious headaches from staring at a white screen all day for the last few days. (brightness is as low as possible on this monitor!) -
I'm sorry but after reading someones crash log i spotted this and thought it was funny. Does anyone know how i can improve my blast awesomeness? Is it displayed in the f3 log?

This reminds me. Does anyone have a link or know of a book that has a study of the greenhouse effect and its effects on the weather? Im not condoning the idea that "global warming" causes mega natural disasters I just want it explained to me. -

Thanks so far to the structured responses. With so many different variables and effects its hard to know whats what. Although I've learned probably more usefull information here than anyone ever could by watching the "news" Jim DiGriz thanks. I will try and find a copy of some of that (with the past and future climates book anyway) I prefer to know the facts rather than be told various peoples opinions. I'm not bothered about the political side of things i just wanted to know about the various gasses, how they can be removed, what causes them to form (its not just our cars that do it, which i knew anyway but theres people that think only cars produce co2 causing global warming (they do release smaller quantaties of other harmfull gasses to you know) Feel free to carry on with the discussion but I've got plenty of material to research and read up on. Im a curious kinda guy like that. I doubt it would benefit me in any way I just like to know. It saves me so much time by you guys linking me some of this stuff and its mroe informative than just reading a wiki article -
Same, I did a Mun landing mission once and landed near-ish to one of the anomolies. Admitidly I have probably done close to 500 mun landings so it was bound to happen eventually.

Mods, why must you be so Cruel?! (Not Moderators)
vetrox replied to CoriW's topic in KSP1 Mods Discussions
Makes you wish you were 15 again with mum and dad buying you expensive stuff for christmas Thats how i feel anyway -
Well i spent last night setting up a backstory for a new mission. I constructed my kethane land train to go mine the last remaining fuel deposit on kerbin so Kerbal kind can reach for the stars. Except I forgot to add a refinery module -.- Got to design one and drive it out to the land train and then its onto the pole!

Sorry to randomly barge in. Can someone recommend all the realism addons wih their full names as i dont know what all the acronyms are. I have deadly re-entry and I have FAR (I also want the real solar system mod) but i dont know what the others are. I find regular ksp a bit too easy now and want an extra challenge. Thanks

An informative post. Thanks. Do you have any sources for this to hand at all? I would love to have a read? Side question is there any way to turn carbon dioxide back into a 1 carbon and 2 oxgen? or just split it all apart then join the 2 oxygens? a way to artificially photosynthesise? -
Yet somehow call of duty and battlefield are still brining in the bucks after releasing what is essentially the same game over and over with dlc already prepared for sale before the games release along with optional premium accounts! Unfortunatley this is the way of things. The bigger a company gets the more it is expected to make money. Game companies cant just make a game and hope to be rich any more. Its just like selling consumer electronics. The product itself doesnt have much profit margin, but the extras bring in the wedge

Just started listening to audio books. Its amazing how much of ksp becomes second nature. I've was listening to one and got so into the book that i had huge gaps of memory from the game. Moments of "oh..i already put that in orbit" or "now what was i going to do? Oh yer dock that...oh...ive already docked those together" the human mind is truly bizarre!

vetrox replied to vetrox's topic in Science & Spaceflight
The only reason i suggested it is because of And mdatspace. Thanks i will give those a read in a bit. Also I was also thinking that with the advent of technology surely there could be some form of human life remaining. Although yes there would be species of plant and animals that would die out, Humanity may still be able to survive through the use technology? EDIT: I snipped out some of my text. AS i was writing it a few things dawned on me that made my argument/opinion completley useless XD -
For some reason I have been reading about greenhouse gasses and their various properties (i was originally looking at ozone for some reason. I have no idea how because i was trying to find out at what hight the atmosphere ends on kerbin with the resized planets mod) One interesting thing i noted was these greenhouse gasses having an "atmospheric lifetime". Gasses do not "decay" but they have a lifetime due to being mixed with oceans, photosynthesis etc. Onto the subject matter "Global warming". Now i put it in quote marks because i personally feel the name is a bit fear mongering. Although the basis of the media hype is true and co2 does make the earth warmer (laymans way of putting it) it also doesnt last forever. According to the wiki article since the industrial revolution greenhouse gasses have increased by 40%. Now I'm going to assume a large portion of that increase happend at the peak of the revolution and that 21st century life is alot cleaner. Now onto my question The facts are, fossil fuels will run out so the extra co2 thats being produced will stop, to a degree, and the co2 that will have been produced will eventually "die" after roughly 100 years (i say roughly because there is no definitive way to measure) So if we carry on burning fuels at our current rate until they run out (2050?) or are to expensive to find, mine and burn and take into account we have been burning these things since 1750's. There cant be much more of an increase in temperature to be had and afterwhich most of the gasses will "die" Do we really have anything to worry about in the grand scheme of things. Would it be possible for us to burn so much as to make the world uninhabitable? From what i have read its the ozone that does all the damage (directly to humans), not the co2 (this is just the most common ghg attributing to increased temperature). Say we do kill most of ourselves off we could return to normal (minus combustion engines) in 100 years or so? EDIT: I'm no scientist. Just a guy who can read wiki articles. So dont condem me as some sort of heretic. If I have my facts wron please correct me in a mature fashion

Cassini vs Curiosity - which is worth saving?
vetrox replied to czokletmuss's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Keep cassini. Every space program is sending stuff to mars so let them spend the money discovering stuff. This isnt the 60's nations dont need to beat eachother to stuff. The cassini probe provides some breathtaking pictures (not that curiosity pictures are to be snuffed at...mars is so...earth like!) and some amazing info on saturn and her moons. I find saturn far more interesting than mars. Also, this hex storm thing on saturns pole. Is there any footage of the poles from the other gas giants? -
BSC: Kerbal X - We have a winner!
vetrox replied to Xeldrak's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Theres no way im going to finish my testing in time! Should have started earlier. I will have to vote on the shortlists. -
Something needs to be wrapped in duct tape... EDIT: didnt notice the other 6 pages -.-
-
I vote start in sandbox. To many times have i read newbies complaining about how hard career mode is. Sandbox has the kerbal x to ease you in (well, it was the first thing i flew in ksp)
-
This game is super awesome, but how much more can be expected of it?
vetrox replied to Unfawkable's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Other than the career mode the game "feels" finished. Its the only early access game I have ever bought that was 100% playable and enjoyable from the go. Other early access games i buy on steam seem like a waste of money (so i dont buy them any more) but you should get ksp. If you like the demo you will love the current incarnation of the game (plus all the mods which i personally dont use any more but there are some real good ones out there! theres a mod for everyone!) -
