Letting the ISS burn up......Why?
Aghanim replied to Vaporized Steel's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Crazy idea: Boost the ISS to some random Earth escape orbit so that it can stay in space without debris hazard to Earth orbitals Not so crazy idea: If they decides to deorbit it, put some sort of heatproof camera inside so we can watch what would it be to be inside a burning space station -
So I found this nameless ancient telescope in my home several years ago Link to imgur album: http://imgur.com/a/wcuER because apparently the forum imgur album embed doesn't work and I cannot delete it The big knob have this text on top of it: 20X-60X D = 60mm Zoom Focus Hard Coated Optics Japan Code no. 20-20-61 The small knob have this text on top of it: 60x <- ZOOM -> 20x When I try to look at the eyepiece, the image looks really blurry with several black dots on it So how do I use this for, lets say looking at ISS from Earth? And is it possible to attach a webcam and take pictures or even video through it? Or see Moon craters? Or see outer planets?

Is there any place where I can find the changelog for 1.1? I already used the search function for 1.1 and I cannot find anything at all

May I hijack this thread for a while? I want to talk about all pulse drive, including Orion drive and inertial confinement fusion drive. How can I calculate the parameters of an pulse drive, including thrust, ISP and waste heat? I'm assuming sufficiently advanced technology to be able to induce a laser driven inertial confinement fusion inside a helium-3 gas flow inside the magnetic nozzle, so that the firing frequency isn't limited to how fast can the pellet gun can fire. If my drive can fire in 1 kHz frequency, how much thrust and heat will be produced? Please point me to the right direction so I can calculate this myself PS: Do they implement Latex support yet?

Lets say we have 3 main human colonies in the galaxy: Our own Earth Space station shipyard in the asteroid belt Populated Kepler-442b Now, they are connected to each other using wormhole laser communicator, so latency is not an issue, and they have their own atomic clock and can observe the same pulsar, so they can theoretically sync their clocks to millisecond or better, and interstellar travel is relatively cheap. Here is my questions: Space stations in the asteroid belt are not constrained to planet rotation and revolution, so the normal concept of day and year doesn't really exist, hence they can set their own time. Should they follow Earth time, Kepler-442b time, or they can go with their own time? Should they have 24 hour light and working day, or to be friendly to circadian rhythm, have 6 hour day and 6 hour night? Or some other arbitrary day and night hours? How about leap seconds and leap year? Will they still exist? Kepler-442b and Earth have different orbital period and possibly rotation, so they have different year and possibly different time of day. How can they agree on the same day, week and year? Is that even possible? Lets say someone on Kepler-442b want to watch an eSports tournament on Earth through whatever Twitch-like streaming service in that year. How can they convert their local time to another local time on Earth? Currently its just adding or subtracting the time zone offset from UTC, but from question 2 even the length of year and day can change How about interstellar spaceliner ticket departure and arrival time? How about time onboard interstellar spaceliner ticket? If lets say the interstellar spaceliner is transporting tourists from Kepler-442b to Earth should they use Earth time or Kepler-442b time? How about if the interstellar spaceliner have some sort of subspace communicator or any other magic FTL communication device? Should they target Earth as a relay station or Kepler-442b? Can people in Kepler-442b and Earth celebrate Christmas, birthdays or any other annual event together? How about Steam summer/winter sales? How about movie releases, or same-day TV telecast?

[IMAGE THREAD] Post your dumb Spacecraft/Rocket Concepts Here!
Aghanim replied to fredinno's topic in Science & Spaceflight
That is exactly how magnetoplasmadynamic thruster works, and we already launch it to space. Too bad that it requires a nuclear reactor to run it, as MPD thruster thrust is the highest between all of the electric rockets.. -
You might find this interesting, building-scale 3d printing in concrete: http://www.contourcrafting.org/ That said, I think that 3d printing is overrated and people assume it can do more than it can (I'd love to see the 3d-printed electric motor the OP refers to, afaik rare earth magnet printing is not a thing, nor can it wind wire). It has some interesting applications in rapid prototyping and low volume, customized production; but for the vast majority of goods more traditional methods are cheaper, faster, and of more consistent quality. Maybe someday when they are further developed we'll start seeing them in common consumer use (another appliance in every house?), but that is decades off IMO.
Induction motor armature is considerably simpler if you want to 3D print it, no pesky rare earth magnets necessary But good luck have fun printing the wires and the power IGBTs necessary to drive it

How fast could an electric fan-jet fly?
Is there an aneutronic fusion process that doesn't still produce neutrons from secondary reactions though? From what I know, proton-boron fusion still produces the occasional neutron, and D-³He fusion also ends up producing neutrons.
Helium-3-Helium-3 fusion doesn't produce any neutrons -
Laser light heat exchanger for an SSTO?
Aghanim replied to SomeGuy12's topic in Science & Spaceflight
If you are going to heat the exhaust gas directly just remember light carries momentum if you target the exhaust gas you will slow down the differential building pressure and heat back into the nozzle, which will probably explode. Most modern engines drive the fuel through the nozzle to cool the casing down and preheat the gas to the decay point if you laser the gas at the nozzle it overheats and the engine explodes.
Assuming the gas is relatively inert, like hydrogen, there is nothing for it to react with and hence the engine wouldn't explode, and the momentum of the laser light is negligible compared to the momentum of gas expansion in the heat exchanger nozzle -

That sounds like you need this mod: Dynamic Deflection That should decreases the steering response according to airspeed, so that the controls doesn't overshoot at high speed -

In the first page it is stated that this mod can makes us do first person EVA, how do I do this? -
Bug report: There is some sort of frame blocking Mk1 cockpit HUD and the texts in the MFD are too gray Image: You can see that the RPM HUD (the green screen) and the HUD frame (the grey frame) doesn't exactly match, which leads to some part of the HUD text getting blocked by the frame, and the text here isn't as white as the text in the first post imgur album MFD. And for some reason I cannot access the MechJeb MFD, although it is installed and attached to the ship. I'm using CKAN build RPM and MechJeb2-2.5.4.0-516, and several parts mod that doesn't tweak Mk1 cockpit, and TweakScale, on Linux.

KSP Interstellar Extended Continued Development Thread
Aghanim replied to FreeThinker's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
After playing with KSPI for a while, I have found several spelling mistakes in the part names and descriptions: - Inertial COnfinement Fusion Reactor -> Inertial Confinement Fusion Reactor - Direct Cycle Nuclear Turbojet description: (bold text for spelling mistake) But its just some minor mistakes though, its alright. Now, how do I get the upgraded reactors in sandbox mode? -

KSP Interstellar Extended Continued Development Thread
Aghanim replied to FreeThinker's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
FreeThinker can you please add sound effects to ATILLA thruster? Because I've been abusing ATILLA for a while after knowing it is more efficient than the thermal turbojet, but it feels weird that the engine doesn't produce any sound by itself unlike other jets and rockets -
KSP Interstellar Extended Continued Development Thread
Aghanim replied to FreeThinker's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
I have go several months without playing KSP with KSPI, and it seems that now thermal turbojets are replaced by several other nuclear jets. So, is it still possible in the latest version of KSPI to build a fusion-powered jet SSTO? -
