Transparent Portions of PNG files are not preserved for avatars.
Kerbart replied to KrazyKrl's topic in Kerbal Network
Background color of the avatar box? So the avatar box is not transparent? And where does one set the background color of the avatar box? Edit: Unless you mean in Stylish — the profile page was shown without Stylish. And yet there's white bars... -
Transparent Portions of PNG files are not preserved for avatars.
Kerbart replied to KrazyKrl's topic in Kerbal Network
Actually, if you change the theme with Stylish the background does not show through properly. It becomes more visible when you check a users' profile page: Those white bars? They're not in the avatar image. And I doubt they were in the background image @KrazyKrl uploaded. Those same bars show up in the avatar on the left side. They're not immediately visible because the left bar in the forum is white, but once you change that, with say, Stylish, they become visible. -
Transparent Portions of PNG files are not preserved for avatars.
Kerbart replied to KrazyKrl's topic in Kerbal Network
Confirming that the PNG is transparent, it just seems to be drawn against a white backdrop. Completely negating the ability to upload pictures with transparency in the process. Best solution at this point: using some mad Photoshop skillz to add some content left & right and make it a square picture. -
Not sure what you mean. In KSP, rockets already self-destruct. Oh. wait. You mean when you want them to self-destruct?

You're aware that there's already a mod that does just that, right? -
Stupid Keostationary contract won't complete

I bet somewhere else some of your Kerbals tragically died and that was considered to be sufficient sacrifice to The Kraken. -
Stupid Keostationary contract won't complete
Kerbart replied to Tex_NL's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Can we make this a sticky? I wish there were more questions like this, pre-emptively shutting down the obvious questions (instead of reacting angrily when asked about and then it turns out to be the cause anyway...) and proving that “the obvious causes” have been checked. As for the answer: no clue. Sorry. Agree with you that based on the picture, yes, it should complete. I wonder what's going on. -
Other IPS fora? Because googling revealed a discussion on the IPS support forum in which there was a lot of lamenting on how badly it worked on IPS, compared to other forum systems. Apperently everything is stored as HTML and I got the impression that IPS' plan is to go that way, once they have a reliable way to filter out unwanted tags.

Contract says: we want you to transmit science from space around Kerbin. More specifically, the objective is: Transmit or recover scientific data from around Kerbin Note how the contract does not mention that I need to use a specific command module, antenna, kerbal or anything else to fulfill the contract; it just mentions "transmit science" When I choose "transmit science" from my mobile processing lab (my space station really doesn't have a lot else; why would it?) it doesn't count towards the contract. What am I doing wrong?

Teaching Aliens English (Or any other Human language)
Kerbart replied to Spaceception's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I'm sorry, my bad. I should have looked better at history. Yes, practically every interaction in the history of mankind where explorers ran into local tribes has worked out exceptionally well for those local tribes. Why should I think that meeting a true alien civilization would work out any different? Silly me. -
I agree that the current version is quite bland... But I think that the primary concern for Squad right now is to get things up and running, and the goal of the transition, aside from getting things to work, was to keep downtime to a minimum. It seems that we're now in a phase where the emphasis is on getting the functionality of the forum in line with what the community wants. Once that's worked out, we'll likely see some window dressing. Yes, it's painfully bland, but it works. That's the most important thing. The blandness will be addressed once everything else is out of the way, I'm sure.

Teaching Aliens English (Or any other Human language)
Kerbart replied to Spaceception's topic in Science & Spaceflight
How would humans explain their technology and language to a young alien race? If history is to serve as a guideline, probably with nuclear bombs and a wide range of nasty diseases. -
The mod takes the Isp of the engines used and the fuel consumption, and plugs that into the rocket equation (DV = Isp×g×lnm_wet⁄m_dry), so you get (based on the current "wet" mass) the "dry" mass required for the DV needed. The difference is the amount of propellant to be used; that's divided by the mass flow of the propellant and that gets you the time.

Without intending to sound smug, but what I find is that it pays to be really critical on the contracts you accept, and working on aligning them with what your income needs are. Practically every mission I run, even if it's refueling my lunar stations, has one or more contracts riding on it. I'm not saying that I'm drowning in cash but money is not a problem (mainly a challenge) when you ensure that every launch is at least 75% (and preferably double than that) paid for by your contracts.

KSP inspired me to design a liquid-fueled rocket engine
Kerbart replied to ap0r's topic in Science & Spaceflight
As mentioned before but it cannot be mentioned enough: safety first! As a rule, any experiment needs to be done in open air. As mentioned by John D. Clarke in Ignition! those who do their experiments indoors “are considered insane, even by rocket scientist standards” -
Yes, but my point is that you will not find that water with current technology. Unless you send a probe. If a long distance scan is going to reveal the presence of water on earth, it'll be the oceans. Not the 2.5% fresh water we have scattered all over the place in minute fractions.

This might have been posted before, but I couldn't find it (though that really doesn't mean that much). When I have a contract to "transmit science in xxx orbit" there are various ways of doing that. I could do a crew report and transmit it. I could do an eva report. I can read a temperature. The list goes on. But ironically, the one thing that does exactly what the contract says—letting your MPL transmit science—cannot be used to fulfill the contract. It's not a big deal. I sent Bill for a coffee break in the local storage pod and had him send a crew report from there, before going back to sciencing science. And it got a good chuckle out of me. But really, change the verbage on either the MLP or the contract, because this just looks... bizar. Oh, and I'm sure it's in the wrong forum, but I'm clueless as where to post this.

Assuming that we gather information from far away—infinitely better than what we do now, but NOTcomparable to sending a probe like New Horizons—we would disregard an exact clone of Earth as uninhabitable. Yeah, there's water, it's even covering about 70% of the surface of the planet. Alas, the water is salty.

One can argue that Apollo 13 wasn't Science Fiction. However, I think that 2001 was pretty accurate in how spaceflight was handled. Perhaps even more so. Of course there's the scene at the end, but I think we can safely square that away under “suspension of disbelief” as it was a plot element, just as what Cooper was doing inside the watchimacallit in the black hole; it's part of the plot and it is a Science Fiction movie after all. Hate it or love it, Apollo 18 was accurate in it's depiction of space flight (again, disregarding what's covered under suspension of disbelief because it's part of the plot) Europa Report did a good job at keeping things realistic, I think. When wandering down the path of obscure movies or semi-obscure movies (the 1968 version of Polaris comes to mind) it's really not that hard to find movies that show a fairly realistic depiction of space flight. Mainstream is a different story.

To say that Curse doesn't care about anything but their revenue is to claim that, say, Apple doesn't care about anything but revenue and therefore their hardware is by definition sub-par quality. Let's rephrase the question and make it equally “unbiassed” as the original question*: Do you want your mods to be hosted by a professionally ran company who has a vested interest in keeping the service running fast and reliably, or do you want your mods to be hosted by an amateur who'll keep things up as long as he's interested in this hobby? Just to make clear, I have nothing against KerbalStuff, applaud the initiative and I'm happy that there's not a monopolist hosting the mods, but thinking that a commercially ran company should outsource the hosting of the mod library to an individual who has no business interest in keeping things running properly and for who, quite frankly, it is a bit unclear who they can continue to run bandwidth intense operations indefinitely. Yes, there are advertisements on Curse. But they’re not page-invading flash monstrosities that cover the entire page, and somebody has to pay for hosting storage and bandwidth. And if that's advertisers, I'm fine with it. The moment Curse would start charging per mod, that’s where I would drop them. But they are not, are they? So: I voted no: as a business, Squad should be using the services of a platform that offers a viable case of continuity, as opposed to the welcome and well-intended services of an amateur whose ability to continue this service for the lifetime of the product are, though proven sustainable in the past, is not as clear as the services offered by the commercial provider. Entire books have been written about how a survey should no try to “lead” questions as it yields fairly useless survey results.

Indigenous rights group block telescope construction
Kerbart replied to PB666's topic in Science & Spaceflight
They were "ok" because the TMT arranged the hearings in such a way that nobody could attend. There seems to be a misunderstanding about the reason for retracting the permit. The permit was NOT retracted because the locals were "suddenly" against it. The permit was retracted because the TMT bypassed procedures. It's totally on themselves. -
Vertical thrusters on all four sides of the barge? If the barge starts listing to port side, the port thrusters would push up and the starboard thrusters would push down. Same with the thrusters mounted fore and aft to reduce pitching. That seems more likely to me than pumping ballast around, which is inherently slow.

Couldn't you just sacrifice a goat, or someone's firstborn, instead?
-
Someone please explain this RAM limitation to me.
Kerbart replied to Dafni's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Actually you wrote, and I quote: Is there a misunderstanding? Stock is working fine, and the horrendous waste of system resources because all textures get loaded into memory doesn't cause problems because most machines have enough memory for that. The issue is that right now is that everyone who uses dozens of mods want a 64 bit version because we're talking about more than a few textures and is is worth the fuss. You will have to explain this to me. Why would the game choke if you pass a giant space station? This is about textures. Not part count. Unless you mean that there is this theoretical space station that contains all textures in the game. That means all textures of the planets. All textures of the moons. All textures needed for every single IVA imaginable. Textures for all parts. Let's think “all parts” through for a second. I'd love to see this space station of yours. Does it have all twenty different pods on it? And that's just stock. Given that we're running into a resource problem we'd need a dozen more from the various mods. And then, I guess fifty different kinds of fuel tanks? It's hard to find a fuel station with fifty fuel tanks in the first place, let alone fifty different ones. But wait, it will get better. Engines. If your station requires the game to load all textures in a texture-on-demand setting, you're going to need all engines. Nerva's. Ants. Main Sails. I'd love to see the station that uses a Kerbodyne KS 25×4 Mammoth engine in the first place. Let alone combined with a set of whiplash ramjets, goliath turbofans, a few rapiers. And, for reasons now totally unclear, that selections of Ants, Main Sails, etc. Did I mention the solid rocket boosters? Every wing under the sun imaginable? Because when you claim that this supergiant station uses every texture, I assume you mean every texture. Because if it's only 10% or so, loading textures on demand is going to allow you a lot more. A lot. Your argument is probably “maybe not the station, but what about the ships docked to it” but even then, I will bet you dollars to doughnuts that on-demand will result in the ability to load much bigger stations than you can right now. So yes, maybe, maybe there will be that one player out there that has this insane contraption orbiting a planet. Something that makes Whackjob look like some kind of boy scout. Is it a valid argument that, because there would be one theoretical player with a ship that is making KSP crash right now, the game should not be fixed to the benefit of 99% of the players because that ship would still cause the game to crash?
