We could try to spam them, turn a capsule into a flower. It probably won't work because of the reasons Zephram told.
-
No, Space Shuttle did not use that. It used those flaps when landing, but during reentry it was behaving as a blunt body ramming through rarified air. It could do some pitching, though, by thrusting through nozzles on its nose.
-
This is exactly what bugged me, but thankfully it seems that's not the case we're getting.
-
Eve's oceans could be used as fuel, and breaking down the rock could be used to make the oxidizer, yeah. But just sticking a hose into the ocean, no, thanks. That would be too easy. So landing near the ocean, where the atmosphere is the densest would be alleviated by the fact you can make your own LF+O, but if you land on a high mountain, then you need less help and you're on your own. I'd be totally ok with that.

Need your own thread moved or locked? Post here.
lajoswinkler replied to Rich's topic in Kerbal Network
Please lock this thread, the question has been answered and most people are not able to read so it might turn into spamfest. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/116616-Dres-and-the-whole-asteroid-thing -
Welcome, you're just right in time to enjoy v1.0!
-
Then I'll tell the mods to close the thread. I am satisfied by your report.
-
Oh god, I don't know. That's why I've said that if this is the case, then I don't like it.
-
Again, people, read the OP. I'm not against Dres interacting with asteroids, I'm just not for procedurally generated stuff around Dres. If something orbits Dres, then it is there. Always has been and it might get kicked out, ok. But spawning and despawning at random in established orbits, please no.
-
I hope! I'd like that a lot. True, that's what happens in Kerbin's asteroid belt. Then why are their orbits circular like on the screenshot?
-
I don't really like his stuff. It's not like I knew how to dock like a pro or anything, I just knew that going to space means going into orbit and not vertical launch. That's it. All the rest was practice.
-
Flaps we're getting are not for reentry. Reentry can not be survived with anything but blunt shaped, ablative surfaces. It's not few Machs in real life. It's reentry. The only proper way to control it is to tilt your vessel.
-
I'd totally put Dres in the middle of a dense asteroid field. Dres' tiny mass and large curvature of its orbit would make capturing of asteroids easier. Not to mention how often it might get bombarded compared to Kerbin. But these procedural moons... just no.
-
We had this thing going on in the past. It would usually turn into geopolitical and toponym discussion.
-
Am I mistaken to assume there will be randomly spawned rocks around Dres? If I'm not, then I'm not ok with this. I was given this screenshot. Kerbin is in an asteroid belt. Sometimes they enter its SOI and either crash or get their solar orbital parameters changed. But if they spawn in circular orbits around planets, then they've been there "forever". They become satellites, moons. Where did they come from? I'd be ok with Dres being in a second asteroid belt (way more densely populated than Kerbin's is), but this apparent solution bugs me. I don't like procedural satellites.

I just don't think first few folks knew how to fly rockets. Honestly, if they're official testers, then crap. I never needed anything. I knew what an orbit is.

KSP 1.0 General Thread + All the new features
lajoswinkler replied to Daze's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Unlike what's been thrown over the media outlets in the last few years, gas giants do not save anyone. They change orbits of such small lumps of rock. They are not vacuum cleaners because that's now how orbits work. -
KSP 1.0 General Thread + All the new features

I just watched DasValdez. Wow. People, buy a week of groceries and lock your door. Hats off to Squad, this is amazing. -
What's your "just one last mission" for 0.90?
lajoswinkler replied to ShadowZone's topic in KSP1 Discussion
My last missions are all about deorbiting everything around Kerbin. This is the main station Modul 8 and it claimed 4 lives due to starvation (TAC). Jeb came in a ship to deliver the fuel for deorbiting and the station sucked away his oxygen, turning him into a fifth casualty. I don't even remember when was the last time I lost Jebediah. There are still two satellites to destroy or bring home safely. -
Kerbal Engineer Redux is essential, I agree. At least a minimal version that would show you your TWR and delta v. Also inclination of your orbit. That's what basics of rocketry is all about. I'd never include MechJeb into the game. People, learn to fly your rockets. It's not hard and the learning process is what makes this game fun.

Catching Wal was a piece of cake. Unfortunately, the tiny landers on the probe did not have any reaction wheels because someone at the KSC forgot to inform the construction crew probe cores now lack them. As a consequence, the first detached lander just smacked close to the north pole. Nothing was left to do but to divert the probe towards Priax and Polta. However, something weird was caught on one of the images the probe sent to Kerbin (lower right corner) after it finished the burn to get out of Wal's SOI. Something very reflective and yellow is on Wal's equatorial ridge. The site was therefore chosen as the landing position of future missions.

Messenger Probe "End of Mission"
lajoswinkler replied to WoofMcMoose's topic in Science & Spaceflight
This has nothing to do with making orbiting difficult. MESSENGER will crash on Mercury. There will be a small field of its parts on Mercury's surface. And the people are screaming about "polluting the universe", "polluting Mercury". Not only it's terribly stupid because polluting a sterile, scorching hot wasteland is a silly thing to even think about, but also shows how high they think of themselves, as if we're capable of doing anything significant in our solar system. They don't have any understanding about how enormous space is and how little we are. Even if it was about orbiting, their pathetic cries about pollution do not consider that. They apply "pollution" to a place that can't be even brought into a connection with something like that. They think about the destruction of a living system. -
Messenger Probe "End of Mission"

And more than half of people't comments under articles reporting on this are: "Why are we polluting the space? Stop polluting Mercury!" Makes you weep over the stupidity of our species. -
Material science.. a weird case...
lajoswinkler replied to AngelLestat's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Some of you here don't understand the difference between temperature and heat, and some do. I'm not sure what to say about starlite. It seems to have very high thermal emmisivity, very low heat capacity and very low thermal conductivity. It does char at blowtorch temperatures, meaning it changes its composition well below 2000 °C. In fact it breaks apart, leaving carbon. Maybe the leftovers are what has such amazing properties because the initial material does not. I bet that egg covered in starlite would be cooked fast if left in an oven at 250 °C.
