Can you fall into a singularity?
StrandedonEarth replied to WestAir's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Yeah, that's my understanding. You'd get ripped apart by tidal forces before even reaching the event horizon. -

Because it had passed all the tests that really mattered, perhaps they were hoping it would turn out stronger than the models. Besides, maybe they felt the need to compete with Musk and show that they could intentionally destroy things too -

Well, if all previous tests had shown that it could withstand the loads it was rated for, this one was to validate the engineering sims/models. And it failed within two percent of the predictions, so I guess that means the sims/models were accurate. But yeah, not as impressive with that big cage around it. I suppose that helps protect the test equipment, since there’s more stuff there than at BC. And it was only water. I assume Al-Li holds up to cryogenic temps well... -

Looks a little crinkly. Hopefully under pressure it'll plump up like a sausage skin. -

Hardspace: Shipbreaker. Currently in Early Access on Steam, 20% off. Could use more (any?) tutorials; I'd post the how-to vid I watched but I can't seem to find it... -
It’s that time of year when the hay is being harvested, rolled into large bales, wrapped in white plastic, and left n the fields. As I drive by I think to myself “the massive marshmallows are ready for harvest!”

Zooming waaaaay in... Why yes, it does look like Zeus. So did they not bolt the test stand down? -

That's a lot of Starlinks. Also a bunch of Lunaship tanker flights -
So Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there, including me. Of course, no one else in the house is awake besides me That's what happens when I get up for work at stupid'o'clock, and the dog won't let me stray far from that routine.. Really, the only reason I made this thread is because I needed somewhere to post this: I was also looking for somewhere to post this, but didn't really see anything fitting, so I'll just leave it here too

When I put the summer tires back on our truck a few months ago, I seem to have misplaced the key-socket-thinkamajigger for the lock lug nuts. After going through my garage and the truck yet again, I still can't find it! Also, we recently got a vinyl tri-fold tonneau cover we ordered from Costco. It came with some bonus stuff, like cleaner and a light to stick in the bed to be able to see what's hiding in there. But the light doesn't work. Oh, the LED works, when I jumpered the battery leads straight to the LED leads. So the button or the postage-stamp-sized circuit it's attached to doesn't work. And I'd have to break or desolder some solder to get a better look at the other side of the board. Too bad, it would have been a handy little freebie, but it would be too much hassle to make it work, needing parts I don't have. E Shifting gears to a different topic, today, a Jool-bound ship somehow missed the SOI transition. To go back and fix that negates my Eve ascent mission from Kerbin launch to Eve orbit insertion, as well as my Eeloo departure burn. Not too bad, but still. At least I have the .craft file for the Eve mission now, and I know it can reach orbit with a bit of wobbling. That Eeloo mission had also previously missed its SOI transition when it was supposed to arrive at Eeloo, but I didn't lose much other progress that time. I guess I need to babysit those SOI transitions now...

So, for an Earth-landing crewed/passenger Starship, (forgetting Luna/Mars for now), perhaps an emergency landing system (after surviving reentry) comprised of parafoils could work? It would not be comfortable, of course, just trying to turn a crash into a crash-landing. The Starship would have plenty of crumple zone for a belly landing. Perhaps the tankage could be flooded with an inert gas to reduce the risk of explosion or fire? Three or more parafoils on the lee side, with N2 tankage for inerting the tanks, seems like the simplest, cheapest option. Fire the belly RCS/thrusters just before impact to further reduce the impact. Orient the parafoils so the motion is backwards (engine first), which makes it more survivable than if the pax are facing the direction of travel (passengers like to face the direction of travel, but seats offer more crash support facing backwards. Military transports usually have backwards-facing seats). Again, it would be like ejection seats: not pleasant, but better than the alternative. -

Thanks for that. I always wondered why they didn’t just re-enter farther back, but figured there must be a reason Now I know -
