Weird (I don't understand why) Things Drivers Do....
StrandedonEarth replied to Spacescifi's topic in The Lounge
They don't always have their high beams on. Some of them just have stupidly bright regular beams and/or the vehicle sits higher so the beams are more in your face. Especially annoying to have a modern pickup behind my little Yaris, with the mirrors shining in my face. Then there's the head on traffic, in rainy conditions, playing hell with the developing cataract in one eye and the replacement lens in the other, making the worn-out lane markings* impossible to see. Fortunately decades of driving experience gets me through. *(the modern, "non-toxic" water-based road paint is much less durable than the old oil-based road paint, which was slicker when wet IIRC. Embedded plow-proof reflectors or cat's-eye reflectors should be *everywhere*) Er, sorry. /rant -
Whoever names things is doing a great job. Stoke is getting people stoked, and the natural evolution of Nova will be: SUPERNOVA!

For Questions That Don't Merit Their Own Thread
StrandedonEarth replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
That’ll buff out… And where’s the OSHA guy? Sorry for the stock responses -
Like the cavedude (or dudette!) who figured out how to rub two sticks together long enough and hard enough to make fire, as well as the one who noticed rocks that sparked, and made fire with those? Before that, learning to preserve the embers of a forest fire and keep them alive for when needed would have been the work of a scientist…

Space is more expensive than it is hard. And it’s pretty frickin hard

This is the way. Don’t forget to bring some bulldozers to bury stuff for protection. -
What was once only science fiction needs to become far more common. This image is a reflection of what the dearMoon project is about...

You mean like this one? For some reason my iPhone shuffle seems to have its own favorite tunes which doesn't seem to change without a reboot, and that was one of them for a loooong time... -

Had to put that in perspective: 9m diameter and what, ~130m tall? A 747-200 fuselage has a ~6.5m diameter and a length of ~70m. Wow. -

StrandedonEarth replied to SmileyTRex's topic in The Lounge
The local Jack station here started playing things like Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister and Helix on their rotation, had to check and make sure it wasn't the 80s again somehow... -
Feasibility of using 'rocks/boulders' as propellant?
StrandedonEarth replied to Heretic391's topic in Science & Spaceflight
The biggest problem I see with regular, common, widespread use of rubble-mass drivers is that now space is being filled with streams of fast-moving debris. Yes, space is mid-boggling huge, but keep hurling stuff around long enough and the odds of a catastrophic intersection will keep rising as space also becomes more populated. E: We used to think Earth's oceans and atmosphere were "bottomless" too, as far as dumping waste, but the cumulative effects of long-term actions are rarely seriously or urgently considered until it's time to counter said effects. -

Woot! It's time to get psyched for Psyche! Of course, the real time to get psyched is when it arrives in ~six years Seriously, I didn't realize that it was finally almost time to launch Psyche. All hail the mighty Falcon Heavy! -

StrandedonEarth replied to SmileyTRex's topic in The Lounge
This song always reminds me of the Bob & Dean Twisted tune version, "Won't get Food Again" ripping on inflation back in the ?late 90-'s?, but it seems to have fallen off the internet radar (found one useless link). But while looking, I did find.... -

OSIRIS-REx Asteroid Sample Return
StrandedonEarth replied to IonStorm's topic in Science & Spaceflight
When I watched the replay I thought I heard them say main deploy happened at 5,000 feet, which would make for a shorter descent than if 20k was the intended mark. Flipping back, the entry infographic didn't state a planned altitude for main deploy. -
