totm march 2020 So what song is stuck in your head today?
StrandedonEarth replied to SmileyTRex's topic in The Lounge
Oh dear Kod not Xanadu! Yeah, I saw that movie when I was ten. Not our first choice, of course . My uncle had taken my cousin and me to the movies. The plan was to see Smokey and the Bandit II, but it was sold out. So my uncle bought us tickets for The Blue Lagoon, then used a payphone (remember those?) to update my aunt (thinking now that that was his mistake). Needless to say, he had to trade those tickets for the only other thing playing at that theater: Xanadu. Um, yeah, big disappointment for a couple of 10yo boys, and I don't think my uncle was much impressed either. But hey, it was a night at the movies, so I guess it was still a good night over all. I was going to post the theme song from SatB2, but, nope, can't bring myself to post country music. Certainly not country music from 1980. Then I'd need even more ear bleach. -

It does, doesn’t it? It wouldn’t surprise me if they’re making the GSE tanks on-site too, since they have all the equipment.... -

Bad science in fiction Hall of Shame
StrandedonEarth replied to peadar1987's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I know TV procedurals are not known for accuracy, and this is more about the procedure than the science, but this was so freakin glaring that even my wife knew it was just wrong... The latest episode of Chicago Fire had a five-ton truck with a cargo of that was smoldering. They knew it would burst into flames when the door was opened. Hoses were charged and ready to spray foam when the door was opened (minor nitpicking: maybe start spraying before opening the door? idk). At any rate, the hose teams had their helmets on, but no face shield, probably not needed for them. But the guy that opened the door, with his hands (another point: maybe use a stick or similar to open, to be able to stand to the side? still not the main headshaker) had the rest of his turnout gear on, but no face shield, and not even the helmet. A beanie toque, sure, but maybe a soaking wet towel over his head would have been good, but no. Summary: Let's stand in front of a roll-up door known to have a smoldering cargo behind it, with no facial protection at all, and open it. Like, c'mon, seriously? yeah, I know, CF (and other TV procedurals) is chock full of things done just plain wrong if not stupidly, for the sake of the story and/or to add drama, but in this case it added nothing. They really need to lay off the stuff where even a layman has to facepalm. An old elevator rescue scene in that show also comes to mind. Mind you, I suppose there is a science to using the proper procedure, often learned the hard way.. -
This is a nice, friendly forum which does not allow insults. Someone even started an "insult thread" in the Forum Games subforum. Even though it was purely in jest, it had to get shut down. It's hard to even get away with Monty Python insults here, although other Monty Python quotes are rampant here...

The title you made for this thread is also a lyric to this song, which triggered many of the comments above which are also lyrics from the song...

“Sssh” is similar to the sound Estes-class model rockets make. Starship/superheavy (will) sound nothing like that. But I’m being silly. Seriously though, the initial reports about the SN11 flight were confusing. First they said it self-terminated, then they said it had a RUD event. In retrospect, I’m guessing the telemetry said the FTS activated, then after further review they saw that a RUD happened first. I’m guessing the FTS activated when the computer sensed something was very, very wrong (after the RUD). But everyone probably figured that out for themselves. -

Yes, you can go in your professional capacity of Chief Cricket Wrangler, training up the next generation of martian cricket wranglers. Going off on a tangent (again), have you ever verified this for yourself? -

You say type that in jest (I think), but that's probably already the plan... -
Yeah, back in the day "athletic" tube socks usually had two colored bands of varying colors near the top, (probably so siblings know which ones are theirs). Hence all the mismatched socks, until the sockmakers got wise and stopped with the colors. And people say we monkee around...

And much of that is building out the factory and building the pads, mounts, and other infrastructure. Once construction is complete (if it ever is; it may never stop expanding) and all the automation is set up and ironed out (talk about Alien Juggernaut Factories), then staffing will drop. How much staffing will drop is open for debate, depending how much they automate the process. I would think the basic tank/dome construction could eventually be fully automated, just like the rings already are. -

Not to mention, Angara A5V? Isn't that the Kerbalesque quintuple-core version? -
Yes, as I understood it at the time, the thrust that the developer claimed was measured was actually being generated by an electromagnetic interaction with the cables supplying power. And while I certainly understand that it is simply impossible within the known laws of physics, one can always hope to find a new law, principle, effect, or particle of physics that allows for a reactionless (propellant-less) drive (aka "space drive") which would be the holy grail of vacuum propulsion. But extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof/evidence, which is not found in this case.

New testing has shown it works 100 x better than a photon drive!!!!

Mine too, but considering that should’ve only taken about 5 minutes to ‘shop and post it, I’m sure there are bigger wastes of tax dollars to worry about -
Well, since this came up.... I have to wonder: Has anyone been losing socks lately, with HE (front load) washers? Because I read a long time ago that the dryer wasn’t the culprit; socks could float over the top of the wash tub and down the drain of top loaders, most likely at the start of the spin cycle. That shouldn’t happen with front loaders, especially since they usually have a drain filter/sieve (just had to clean mine out again)

totm march 2020 So what song is stuck in your head today?
StrandedonEarth replied to SmileyTRex's topic in The Lounge
I'm not sure why this got stuck in my head. I think it's because of my tendency for alternate lyrics to pop into my head, sometimes original, sometimes from another song. For instance, the lyrics to "Hot Rod Lincoln" (by Commander Cody) fits many songs, probably because it's written in the rhythm of iambic pentameter, like it seems many songs are. But for this one, what pops into my head (some parts fit well, some parts don't) is a 130-y.o. poem by Rudyard Kipling, which I discovered over 30 years ago in English class during a poetry assignment. So here's the song... And then the poem... -

There was a news report awhile back about parents complaining that Peppa was teaching their kids to speak with a British accent. Jolly good, I say! Cheerio!
