Why bother with 1.0.5?

There aren't THAT many parts coming in 1.0.5. Many of the pictures are replacement textures, not new parts. Throw those out and you don't have that many parts being added.

By my count there are 9 new parts:

New radiator

A gigantic plane engine

A 0.625m intake, LF tank, and engine

2 crew mk1 cabin

A new 1.25m jet engine, I think

The cargo bay with a ramp

And the shuttle engines

Not saying that's a lot or a little, just a list of the new parts

Sidebar: running KSP from Steam on a Mac, is there any way to control whether it updates on release day? I'd like to know whether I can wait some days and see what breaks, have time to manage missions as needed before updating

You can control if it updates, but if you don't want to update you can't play the game within Steam. If you set it to not auto-update it will just do so when you launch the game.

However, KSP has no DRM so you can copy the game folder out of the Steam folder and continue using it.

I am sure the modders feel the same way as well having to redo the mods yet again to get it working and by the time they are finished unity 5 version is coming out breaking them yet again.

On top of that current 32bit version is already using way too much ram and this will just lead to even less reliable and more crash prone KSP and will most likely add a bunch of new bugs as well.

More like more bugs added than they can fix... And the biggest problem right now is that there is NO ROOM left for any extra parts in the 32bit version.

It is already seriously unstable because of this issue if you do alot of relaunching and if you have more than a few mods it is pretty damn near unplayable.

Not really, I can get 50 or so mods in 1.0.4 before instability and only at about 80-90 does memory become an issue. Also the thermal bug is going to be removed so that will dwarf any bug added IMO.

I don't really care for 1.1. It isn't supposed to make my parts tolerable limit higher by a lot. so I might just stop pc and GET A CONSOLE.(joke) but I'll need a better computer for this game.

As far as I know all the 1.0.5 non-unity 4 bug fixes(things which are in the KSP code) and additions will be in 1.1.

If those are ready then why not release it as it's own update? As an added bonus, for Squad, it allows for more possible bug popping up and being fixed before 1.1 gets released.

For us it means playing KSP with less bugs, new features and new parts while we wait for 1.1. :)

If 1.0.5 fixes the memory leak I will be a happy camper. I currently can not play for long before a memory leak crash.

Tried cutting all my mods back to the bare minimum like KER and KAC and it allows for more time before the crash but I still find it too infuriating to play.

I've probably put less than 20-30 hours in since 1.0.4 dropped as a result. KSP is my favourite game so all I can do is watch videos of other people playing.

It makes sense, why doesn't squad just forget regular releases and put all their effort into 1.1?

Because it wouldn't be all their effort in either case. The people working on the 1.1 upgrade are not the people working on the 1.0.5 upgrade. It's different people. I'm sure the people doing 1.0.5 will probably have more stuff for 1.1, but it still won't be the Unity 5 upgrade they work on.

It's difficult to understand but programming these days is designed to be modular. You have different people that work on different aspects. The people that know the UI and other stuff that needs porting over to Unity 5 are not the same people making parts and game behavioral changes. It's not a task driven process, where one thing must be completed before the next before the next (well, sometimes it is, but not always). So in this case, they got done with one half without the other, that is why they decided to release it. Not releasing 1.0.5 would not make 1.1 any faster, it would just mean you would have to wait on the stuff that is already done.

I haven't been around KSP too long, but in some other projects it seems addons break constantly- sometimes it's due to upgrading the addon language version eg python, but I'm curious as to how much of the mod portion of code will be affected by the game engine upgrade. The save files seem like a very simple format that could translate well across stock versions, but again I'm not sure if the policy is to support old saves or to treat new versions as more standalone. I am actually not playing until 1.05 comes out because as a career mode player I'd like to start fresh with the new contract system. So they better release it tomorrow!

Having worked a little in Unity, I can tell you that the upgrade to Unity 5 is a very complex task, and isn't was easy as most of you think it is.

When Unity released 5, a huge amount of code changed. Code that worked in 4 doesn't work in 5 any more. They have a big task changing all the code to be compatible with the new Unity 5 rules, and it doesn't surprise me that it's taking a while.

One team near me switched to unity 5 in a day. Lucky bums!

I started porting in May, but didn't finish, and we just rebooted that effort today.

Mostly it went fine. But after several hours fighting one bug, my junior dev called me in; then we looped in my co-founder... and eventually it got late on a Friday and we gave up for the weekend.

Once we fix the core stuff, there's two plugins we use that don't support unity 5. Those we have to replace. I've budgeted a week to get it all done, during which we don't really improve the software at all.

It's a big pain to switch versions of your core engine!

Yup, it really depends on what Unity 5 features you're using. The closest game to KSP that I know of that managed to switch to Unity 5 (Beseige) just released their Unity 5 version two weeks ago, I think. And that's a game with almost no UI and has been in development a much shorter time, so less likely to depend on deprecated functionality.

"Why bother with 1.0.5?"

Frankly, i don't understand your pissed off attitude and i completely disagree with your remarks.

Introducing 1.0.5 most propably will remove some flaws, so it will make the game better to play. That will make the wait for 1.1 more acceptable.

I don't believe Squad will be able to release 1.1 before Christmas. The conversion to unity 5 is a humongeous task. It seems more plausible to me that 1.1 will be released in march or april 2016.

I am personally, because downloading all these patches to fix the broken 1.0 update lead to less performance and more bugs on my end (Mac). I'm waiting for 1.1, to see if that helps.

How do you know 1.0.5 has more bugs and leads to less performance compared to 1.0.x? As far as I'm aware, 1.0.5 hasn't been released yet....

Also, there is a similar thread about upgrading to 1.0.5 here if you want to read other people's opinion.

That makes no sense. You want the broken 1.0 fixed but you won't download the fix?

Every streamer thus far has constantly mentioned how many fewer bugs there are in 1.0.5. Doesn't mean there aren't any, but the ones you know are likely disappearing.

NO

As a Mac user myself, I do not agree. I think it will be wise to download and assess this update. Only then can Mac users individually determine if it will be of benefit to them and their specific machine configuration.

IMHO making judgements before assessing facts is illogical.

as far as I understood working on 1.0.5 is about new content, 1.1 is rebuilding all the working stuff in unity 5. of course they want the players to test new concepts and the tweaks to existing ones. i'm most interested in the new jet design, with the clipping turbine and what changes that brings.

and I really hope the transition to unity 5 goes quick and well. the game got too bulky for one core to handle and if 1.1 doesn't constantly run yellow on my pc I'm really happy.

I use Steam on a Mac. I always save a copy of my Save folder somewhere outside the game folders and then I always (auto)update my games, including KSP. I have yet to have any problems doing so and the game always plays fine. I've also always started a new game after an update. I don't put myself into a position to need a previous saved game from an earlier version of the game. Your experiences may vary.

Edit: 345 (no es Guilty Spark, amigo?) -- most updates have at least one new or revamped part. I really like checking out new parts. For engines, this means updating my engine graph (via testing) and somewhat regularly, my engine chart (whenever I decide that the Wiki looks updated enough).

Edit: jarmund -- well, my only mod (besides my own fuel tanks) that I use is KER. So I usually have to wait a few days for that to update. But with a lot of mods, it might be wise to not update until the desired mods have also done so.
