Apparently they were able to figure it out from information Werhner did not destroy; here's the page where that was discussed, from the Evil Interlude "Military Intelligence" Spoiler Fortunately the Kerbulans are still stymied by Werhner's clever misdirection (he changed all his notes to read "E=mc3") and have been unable to extrapolate from the LV-N to any other nuclear technologies. That Melbe's completely mental (never even seen the pastime in person but I once met a rider, broken bones seem to be just all in a day's work). Also, I don't know why but most of the time I see Sarge speak (unless he's talking to the probes or "speaking freely"), my mind puts in a "classical butler" voice, probably his high formality combined with his "take everything in stride" attitude. Just wondering what kind of voice was intended for the others (Melbe & Clauselle are quite obvious), does Nimzo have a Russian accent? No, he's definitely Gunnery Sergeant Hartman from Full Metal Jacket. Also the voice of virtually every Marine sergeant you see/hear in media (first one that comes to mind is the sergeant toy from Toy Story). He's very polite to officers because that's military decorum, but if you're below him in the rank structure, hoo boy you're going to get an earful if you do something wrong. Well, aside from the "toy story" example, I haven't seen/heard any examples (and neither do I want to), however that one I do know a bit (maybe I'll try that one). As for the "butler tone", I guess I've seen more examples of that than "marine sergeant" (not that that's saying much), it's mostly how he was so matter-of fact with Melbe's lunacy and similar circumstances. As for reading it in a specific voice, I might clarify that it is how I hear it in my head. ------------------------------------- Oh, my 2c on the "stamp mill", there may be the issue of carrying all the materials needed to run it (e.g. air), not to mention that ore processing may be more complicated than separating gold. However, I agree with @Dman979's sentiments (I think, no offense intended, just being cautious about the intended meaning) that this side conversation is even happening. Well, that's probably because a seasoned sarge in any organization knows that taking any other tone with whomever this incarnation of an LT is only makes em more determined and it's best to just treat them with polite exasperation and hope they grow or get promoted out of it before they hurt themselves too much. My thoughts exactly. Two factors to consider: one, the CO (Val) had ordered Sarge to take Junior Looty Melbe "wherever she wants to go." Two, nothing Melbe was doing put Sarge or the mission in serious danger. The ship now masses a whopping 1400 tons fully loaded, but minus a few probes. Interested parties can calculate the dry mass from the open resource window. Assuming their densities are equal to those of LFO, the real dry mass is ~352T. However, you can't use fertilizer as propellant (at least not very successfully), so the 455T is probably more true.
