I'm (Hopefully) going to publish my stories!

HELLO EVERYONE!

So, as you may know, I have been writing a fan-works series; The Second Great War, and the Battle of Kerbin (I had the First Great war, but I accidentally let the thread die (oops!)), and so far they've been (Somewhat) of a success. After talking with a person who gave me a wrong-number text, I let them have the link to read the story. However, after looking it over, they suggested that I publish it. Now, I, being only 14 (Going on 15 in May), have no way to even know how to publish. That's where you guys (Please) come in.

Now I know that even though this is the best forum out there in both community interaction and getting-along-ness (Is that a thing?), but I know not to expect a whole lot of help. I mean, come on. Why in the world would you want to help a person who you don't even know publish a book? There's just no way! But if you could, please, please help me. It would mean the world and a little bit more to me.

Yours Featherly,

DarkOwl

Yeah... I've lost count how many times I've been asked about having Emiko published. And I won't deny it, I would love to see it happen.

But there's a problem, and you also have it. Simply put, we probably own the rights to our stories, but we don't own the game itself. Because of this, I am fairly certain you (and I) would need the legal permission and/or approval of @SQUAD itself. And I don't remember off hand about yours, but mine also include several song quotes, so I'd have the added issue of getting permission from the bands.

Honestly, I have not tried reaching out to the Dev's about publishing Emiko Station. I figure if they know about it at all, and are interested, someone will send me a pm or e-mail to get the ball rolling.

But if you're really serious about this, I would think about reaching out to @SQUAD first, and seeing if it's even possible.

Well... Yeah I guess you're right. Hey! Maybe we could see if we could get the stories in the same book! Sorta like a short story book! Wait Emiko is like 10000 pages.... Never mind.

Yeah, Emiko is just under 100,000 words, and I couldn't begin to tell you how many screenshots. It would be fairly huge.

But if you write a couple more, then you could combine them all into one good sized book of your own.  :)

We'd definitely need to reach out to Squad first - for good manners as much as legal reasons. The last time I read the forum terms and conditions, my understanding was that anything posted on the forums that made use of game assets was owned by Squad. That would seem to cover videos and screenshots and arguably (although to my mind this is a bit flimsier) names of characters and companies. If Squad have trademarked 'kerbal', we'd need to check what classes they've registered it in. Basically, I think we might be able to split the appropriate legal hairs but in all honesty its not worth it. Getting permission is the easiest thing to do - and it's the right thing to do too. :)

That would be a brute of a book. According to my word processor, my fanfic is currently weighing in around 500 pages. @Plecy75 has been kind enough to bundle it all into a properly formatted (and hosted!) file, which so far is 841K - and it's text only. Goodness knows how big @Just Jim's or @Kuzzter's work would be!

I think someone... @KSK maybe... already started one.

Yeah, although it's horribly out of date due to spending all my writing time plugging away at my own story. Updating it might be a nice little project for the festive holiday. :)

A lot of jurisdictions probably do not even allow these kinds of terms and conditions. If someone posts from another countries, laws and regulations from that country apply too.

Well, @Just Jim's Emiko Station would probably work good in Microsoft Word, but @Kuzzter's Kerbfleet stories would probably go better on another platform (still working on that). Fortunately, I could easily host both of them. Off the top of my head, they would probably be nearly 5GB a piece, but I can definitely host that, as I have 1TB of cloud storage just sitting around. I may even try to compile them if @Just Jim and @Kuzzter want me to. It would probably take a while, but no worries. First Flight took nearly 2 weeks to get all the formatting kinks worked out, and i'm still not done with the spellchecks(no offense to @KSK, they are bound to pop up in a quarter-million-word novel), so Emiko will probably take a month, and the Kerbfleet stories would probably take 6 weeks each, but I think I can manage, if I do them one at a time. If anyone wants me to compile a story, just let me know, and send me a link, and I'll put you on the list (once I have a list lol)

bad idea, most people use MS word and won't be able to open it (i know from experience)

Well I do have Word, but I like Pages more because it has more font options and I can use it better.

Pages works OK - it's what I use to write on but if I'm posting to the web I'll just export the unformatted text and reformat using whatever tools the website gives me.

If I was sending to a publisher I expect Word would be better, although checking what files they accept before sending would be the best plan. :)

Anyhow - let's take this chat elsewhere rather than derailing Jim's thread any further!

My stuff is actually easier to host than you think--however...I do not at this time wish for any content created by me and posted on this Forum to be duplicated or transmitted, in whole or in part, by any means without my express written consent.

Not that I think you would do so, @Plecy75, but seeing the way this thread is going I wanted to make that perfectly clear :)

Of course, @Kuzzter, I did not intend to even start unless you wanted me to! And in case you change your mind, the offer will remain open indefinitely. It is also extended to all writers on this forum, so if anyone wants me to compile their story, just let me know.

@KSK when you update the library, can you please post my offer in the thread? i'm currently waiting around doing nothing, and i would like to help some more people with getting their stories compiled into downloadable files.

Same for myself.

And the truth is, I'm not actively looking to get mine published, it's just too much legal crap to mess with. I only brought it up as an example to try and answer the OP
