Well yeah, but I also didn't know they had names, like how ships have names. Is it the title of the plaque you typed when you planted it?

I'd guess you can do it in the tracking center, like @Slam_Jones suggested. It's a bit esoteric but you select the flag, then the |i|nfo icon, then click (or right click, don't remember) the name at the top. It's got an orange background.

I tried that already, but it will not let you change the text.

You can change it in the persistent file. Back it up first and all that jazz but just open it, search for the exact title, and everywhere you find it, change it. Should work fine.

There was a brief time in the 1.1 builds where you could change flag names (even ship type) in the Tracking Station. I used them as runway markers all the time, and changed type to Base just so I didn't have to hunt through all the flags.

 It vanished with 1.2.  Why, I don't know

Let's add - replanting the flag locally, e.g. after you made a typo and noticed only after clicking OK is fairly easy: rightclick flag with a kerbal near to it, click 'take down' and then plant the flag again.
