I'm not talking of potholes only, I'm also talking of people spreading pointy nails and even screws with holes inside them to make some money off their roadside tyre repair.

Well, the places I'm thinking of are where I'm offroading for days on totally undeveloped trails where the nearest services are two or three hours drive away. I don't have to worry about unscrupulous roadside tire repair shops because there are no roadside tire repair shops, unscrupulous or otherwise.

A couple of years back we were offroading in Death Valley and my buddy hit a rock hidden in some tall grass next to the trail with both of his right tires. Two flats, one spare. Luckily we were only about half-an-hour off of asphalt at that point, so he and I loaded up one of the flats in my truck while the rest of the guys set about changing the spare on. It took us about an hour-and-a-half to get in to Pahrump where there was a Walmart. Bought a new tire and put it on to the rim. Got back to his truck just as it was getting dark. Didn't get to camp until about 10:30 or so. Adventure! LOL :D

I expect the roads I travel are a little less busy, and I see few shoulders ('murican for "side of the road'?) that a '60 landy can't access, even with a flat. Don't really see those concrete-and-death freeways over here, at least not yet.

Yeah, well, not as many concrete-and-death freeways where I live now either, and I couldn't be happier. :)

They're actually a lot more safer here in many regards. Ain't any people around, no one bothers to screw anything. The ground is never sharp - most are clay bogs, others are big round rocky things or sandy gravelly things. Not much sharp rocks, only a few twigs in the other.

But with a population density of 370 people/sq mi (US is only 85 people/sq mi) you don't see much of such roads.

Our entire biology class threw a bunch of arguments at them and they're completely stubborn in their belief. They're too far gone XD

Don't you dare do that in Finland ! To them, 5 km (3 mi) is a stone throw away ! :D

I moved to Norway recently :D

5 km is quite close, I agree, but the area of Norway I'm in currently has this network of towns with 5,000-20,000 person populations. They're not far apart, but they're each kind of their own little world

As we were getting ready for bed at about 11:30 last night we heard the coyotes over our back wall again, and then we heard the most god-awful noise of them tearing some other animal to pieces. I was a little worried that our cat (Dumb Cat, who taunts the coyotes, if you remember) had finally had her number come up. But, no, she was there in the morning, safe and sound, and loudly complaining that nobody had come to her food dish to give her treats yet. Dumb cat.

She ate a coyote and still was hungry?!

Okay, that got a belly laugh. :D She's definitely a hunter. She has moved up from birds and mice, took out a small cottontail that was raiding the garden a couple of weeks ago.

I feel the need to complain that I am paying for all these digital distractions that have led me to procrastinate on cleaning up my apartment. :P

Now I'm scrubbing my counters and sink, and it's 11:45 at night. I still have a day, but I gotta work too, so really it's only an afternoon. I should have been done today, but stupid YouTube... Stupid emails... Stupid forums (every forum but this one, of course  )... There's always a distraction. A moment where you think... "Man, I need a break... Just one video and I'll get back to work."... And an hour and a half later, with two Minecraft videos and a lecture on quantum theory and the holographic universe concept watched, and I'm thinking... "D'oh!!! Back to work, for real."

Seriously... If you have chores... Just unplug your network cable... The temptation is beyond the resistance of any person!

Uneducated people are terrible. A country full of them is a disaster. An economical disaster of Communist proportions.

A <insert-your-favorite-non-forum-rules-compliant-offense-here> of a (now no more) friend of mine called me two weeks ago offering a contract. I took it, despite that feeling in my guts telling that friendship and business doesn't match.

Ok, the guy was to send me some information about the job last week. I received nothing. (sigh)

Yesterday, another friend of mine got a problem with his wife, and asked me for some advices (I have my share of bad decisions on the matter, I know preciselly what not to do) and I fired up my personal Skype account to talk to the guy.

And there it was - that (no more at this time) friend of mine sent me professional and classified data on personal channel that I explicitly told him is not secure (used on shared computers) neither professionally monitored. And, with a 36 hours later timestamp, a complain about my "unprofessional behaviour". (sigh)

People here send classified commercial information on Facebook, on WhatsApp, on everything, but not on my professional, secured, paid, professional e-mail - this last one is used for PPT presentations with kittens, jokes and every kind of chitty-chat ever created under the Sun.

I loose a job and a "friend". I'm pretty liquided about the job but, frankly, not that much about the "friend". People unable to follow a simple instruction as using a commercial email/skype account for COMMERCIAL STUFF is not someone you can rely on, on my experience.

Now on fire-fight mode. A 30 years "friend" can do a lot of damage to your network.

Damn.

... huh ?

Have a bath, lie down, empty your immediate mind, and edit the post again.

Or just don't talk about it, whichever you prefer.

Lisias' friend sent him important information through a service which is insecure and unmonitored, despite his insistence that it is neither secure nor monitored. This put the information at risk of interception and delayed its reception besides.

Yeah, but... it's not about anything confidential ? And say, if opening personal stuff wasn't allowed at the moment it was sent, they could just wait until it's fine to do so ?

I still don't see the rationale for blame.

OK I saw what happened after re-reading it again. So basically two stuff came at the exact same time, one of which shouldn't have happened.

Maybe they shouldn't have opened it at all for any reason...

But you know what, you learn up.

Yep. People always understand the world by using themselves as reference. It's a drag, but it's how people are.

And exactly how I suppose to know I should not open it without opening it? It was my personal account, it is intended to be used for chitty-chat.

Yeah... sorry about that. Not much you could do except to remind other people or give stern notice. (I hope you haven't strangled your ex-friend or something !)

well... yeah.

I think this goes the same to if/when you came across your relative at some bussiness activity. Pretend you never met.

He will survive. On tubes. :D

Honestly, I wish he does well by himself - because I don't intend to ever move a finger on his behalf again.

Just had a "Deplorable business Condition" (a.k.a DEPTCON) level 2 situation yesterday, and had to take a flight as soon as possible. Obviously, only a full price seat was still available, and with an LCC... However, it seemed the flight would not be so awful at first, the seat on my left being empty at the time of the doors closure. Then, it appeared. The nightmare of any traveler, the obsessive fear of those seeking rest, the Crying Child. Almost 10 hours without hearing her crying or talking loudly; even if it was annoying I can only pity the parents who were enjoying the show in the first row...

Anyway, I'm well jet lagged and just dreaming of an Utopian aircraft carrier. An airline where fellow passengers will not stand up in front of the boarding gate while their sections have not been announced, where the one in front of you will not be stupid to the point of not straighten its seat while we are about 2 minutes to touchdown, where the one in front will not lower its seat while you eat, where the one behind you will not place a hard plastic bottle in the seat pocket (the one you can feel on your back), where the one behind you will not type on its screen like a mad one, where the passenger will clean the toilet after use, and finally where the passenger will stop getting up immediately when the flight arrives at the door (most often it is a user who has to collect luggage and it will therefore be useless to it to get up early and occupy the corridor)

Seriously, this flight was the one of too much and makes me want to work like crazy, in order to be able to pay me better conditions of travel.

New life goal: end with a Citation Encore+, at least we can fly alone with it :D

Flying is a pain these days !

I recall crossing the pond several times shortly after 9/11. I (and the few others) could sleep stretched out in a center row. Crews were friendly ("Oh, a customer !"). That didn't last long and i wished i could go by boat next time.

But yeah, flying is a pain these days. Even on relatively short trips.
