Can you edit properties of an individual part placed in symmetry?

Recommended Posts

I'd like to be able to have my landing gear have red lights on one side and green on the other.  It is very difficult to accurately place landing gear without symmetry on, so I would prefer not to place the right and the left individually.  Is this possible?

In my experience, any property you can edit after the vessel is out of the SPH or VAB can (must) be edited individually for all the members of a set, even if originally placed with symmetry.  For instance, if you place a ring of Puff engines around your orbital tug, and then (while in orbit) set the thrust limiter on one, you have to set the others individually.  If you'd done that in the VAB, they'd have all taken the setting as a group.

Unfortunately, I don't believe you can edit the color of lights after launch.  Perhaps you can just set the lights in the landing gear to "off" and install separate lights, bound to the "Gear" action group, with your desired colors?

Two options:

  1. Put the wheels on one wing without symmetry.
  2. Turn on symmetry with X
  3. Hover the wheels on the other wing, looking at the first wing so you know the wheels are exactly placed by the fact that the symmetric wheels are directly over the first set of wheels.
  4. Turn off symmetry with shift-X
  5. Place your 2nd set of wheels.

Or:

  1. Place your wheels on the wings.
  2. Pick up the wings.
  3. Place a wing back without symmetry.
  4. Alt-click the wing again to pick it up.
  5. Place it on the other side without symmetry.

There are variations of these and different ways to ensure exactness, but in my experience matching the part to a texture or to its mirror image is perfectly good enough.

How about Aviation Lights? This allows for different colors on symmetric placed lights.

It would be another mod in your installment, and another part on your vessel (well, two), but it works and I think it worths.

This doesn't solves the question you asked, but allow a new way to accomplish what you want.

Careful using option 2 there, as you may encounter rotational translation, not mirrored. Even flipping the wing will inevitably put the gear on the wrong side of the wing or face it the opposing direction. Option one hasn't failed me yet though. Good biz. I'm afraid what's desired isn't possible without using the above tips to circumvent the issue. I'm unaware of it, but I'm very confident to solve this little quandry through the path of least resistance: have a good look at the available mods. If that's more problems, well... I guess you'll have to wing it. ;)
