No it's not. If I'm not mistaken all vesseltype does is assign the icon in mapview. MinimumCrew = 0 is required.

VesselType definitely does need to be defined for command to work. I have helped multiple other modders diagnose why their module command on probes wasnt working and each time it was because VesselType = probe was missing. However it may be the case that the issue is simply the VesselType field being missing. Perhaps 0 minimum crew will work even with VesselType = Ship. Anyway I haven't had the chance to test yet.

VesselType is required, but not required to be probe.

Wikipedia says Starliner "was designed" to fly atop Atlas V, Delta IV, Vulcan, and Falcon. Idk how accurate that info is, but I figure by the time there's another Starliner flight, the choices will have dwindled from 4 down to 2 ... and I can't begin to fathom how it would end up on top of a Falcon, so I thought we'd at least have a looksee in KSP ... New beta update today:

DOWNLOAD

  • Fix not switching between multiple drag cubes in airbags module (fixes some reentry heating issues)
  • Change capsule vesselType from probe to ship
  • Increase capsule probe core SAS level
  • Update service module textures
  • Update heatshield paramaters
  • Fix audio related log spam on RCS block B

Two pre-releases in one day! I managed to finish the multi adapter a little earlier than I thought I would so pushed this out. This part has a stagable top decoupler and a manually triggered second decoupler on the bottom so the larger models can be used for secondary paylaods (up to you to figure out an adapter).

I was inspired to try tonight this after using the Falcon the other day. 

Here's the Hepha ... Hepher... Heffalumpus version. I don't have Jordan's installed at the moment. This is with Zorg's SRBs, and a single (lower) Centaur tank. The upper stage shows 2628 m/s dV at ignition, and my circularization burn was only 136 m/s after the ridonkulus amount of fuel in the first stage. (Also, I do not know how much Starliner does with the upper stage when going to the ISS.)

This build does have one of the rocket profiles of all time.

These arent uploaded yet as theres still a bit of set up work to do but heres a preview of the 5 variants that will be included. Hopefully will be uploaded over the next few days (before anyone asks no more are planned).

First off we have a version with all white thermal blankets compared to the blue grey of the IRL starliner. Retains the stripes but in dark grey instead of blue for a monotone colour scheme.

Then we have  white paint version inspired by the Restock style.

I wanted a shiny variant. Thought about Apollo style earlier but ended up going for the Orion Artemis I style instead. This variant will only be available when Resurfaced is installed.

Finally we have probably my favourite, the Darkliner, which is inspired by Orion as configured for EFT-1. (dont think about why the nose cone has tiles :P  you can mix and match anyway).

A couple of QoL suggestions:

1) Toggleable upper "spider" truss for Atlas V adapter - to accomodate stuff you can put into the hole, such as Orbus-21 shown above. 

2) Toggleable nose covers on NC-6, if that's even possible with SAF. For those who want a more sensible LES solution (Restock LES fits perfectly, and looks great)

Don't think so. Doesnt make any structural sense and the texture doesnt work out.

I don't think this is possible as a toggle. But the Restock LES does indeed fit well (especially with the new white paint and tiled variants). I can add it as an extra part without the SAF module. I'll upload it with the variants.

DOWNLOAD

  • Add texture variants to the capsule, parachute cover and nose cone
    • Default blue grey thermal blankets with blue stripes
    • White thermal blankets with dark grey stripes
    • White paint (ReStock style)
    • Shiny "foil" with underlying tiles, inspired by Orion Artemis 1. (Only available with Resurfaced PBR shader mod)
    • Black tiles inspired by Orion EFT-1
  • Add version of parachute cover without nose cone. Has a 1.25m top node and can be used with the (re)stock abort tower.
  • Fix typos in VABO configs
  • Add 2.75m bulkhead to VABO
  • Allow surface attach on multi adapter
  • Add lunar variant to the heat shield with more ablator.

Would it be possible to inject the "BCS" tag into the NDS docking port so it shows with a "BCS" filter?

triple edit for the lolz: I'm just realizing that the Window Paint Switch doesn't seem to make any visible change for me. The parts around the windows seem to remain the dark default style. Maybe I'm blind and not seeing what's changing?

You need to enable the extra window switch first. the paint switch is for that part only. Although it might be a good idea to combine the window toggle and colour switches into a single switch to reduce clutter and confusion now that I think about it.
