What is going to happen to KSP 2?

Recommended Posts

I heard that everyone was gone from intercept games, but then I read an article stating that there was still going to be development by the KSP 1 devs. Does anyone know if KSP 2 is going to get fixed? Maybe they can start from scratch, but as long as those bugs and the insane performance requirements are fixed, there is still hope for following that roadmap. And starting from scratch wouldn’t be as hard, given that they still have the assets. If the original KSP developers can do it, then I think KSP 2 is set.

KSP2 was dead before it launched into early access. There's no upside to restarting a toxic title. It's over.

The real questions are: how long will KSP1 be supported (not developed); and what is going to happen to the KSP franchise going forward.

Forget KSP2.

Both games will be "supported" in the sense that if a 3rd party change (such as a video driver update) makes the game unable to launch, that will be fixed.  PD still has a support team to keep its games technically playable for compliance with various consumer protection laws, remove launcher/branding, that sort of thing.

Beyond that?  Only if PD gets sold, which apparently T2 wants too much for.

Just because KSP 2 had logistics issues which were entirely the fault of the producers doesn’t mean it has to burn in video game heck, it still has potential if they fix the really bad problems. I’m really wondering if anyone has information on whether KSP 2 will still be developed. I bought it the second they released it, and my laptop was a laptop, so I realized I had to wait until I finished my more powerful computer or the developers made it require less performance. Even if I do wait though, I don’t want it to be a dumpster fire

Potential I'd the root of the problem. KSP2 had potential, just not enough to justify continued developement.

The idea that some other developer will pick this back up is cray to me. Those initiated in tech development unilaterally agree that picking up a massive chunk of code without access to the people who wrote it.. is a complex and hopelessly uphill battle.

If they were going to continue development... they would have kept some developers

Uphill battle? Yes. Hopeless? Nope.

I know cases of success - but, most of the time, they involved some type of crowdfunding or voluntary work - paid reverse engineering is almost (or, sometimes, more) expensive as developing the code itself: you do it on software that contains highly valued knowledge - the code, itself, is usually worthless, it's what it does (and how) that's worth the trouble.

Unless it was decided to restart from scratch, salvaging design, artwork and other assets and throwing code away.

Not impossible, but highly improbable IMHO.

The KSP1 devs all either moved over to KSP2 or on to other jobs. No one has worked on KSP1 for a couple of years or more.

To be clear, the KSP1 devs that moved to KSP2 are gone now.

As far as it is known, nobody is working on KSP2, and the only hope is that some company buys the rights and completes the development.

This last possibility is a pipe-dream
