astropapi1
Working on VTOL's family:http://imgur.com/a/pxjFFNice missiles! Can we get a subassembly, or maybe some instructions? I've been trying to do that kind of stuff for a long time.
RocketPilot573
I have greatly improved the nose and re-did the vertical stabilizer, it looks more like a space shuttle now. The cockpit is now pitched down 5 degrees to keep it connected to the nose, and the Kerbals can actually see the ground out the windows now!Time for the second launch test! This time I decided to try out those NERVAs I put on there. To minmus!Javascript is disabled. View full albumI did not have to put any extra fuel in the cargo bay to do this. Also I always separate the external fuel tank right before getting to orbit to avoid too many debris. So there could have been a few hundred more m/s of delta-v. Roflcopterkklol
Hmm just starting flight tests on this thing and im not sure if i like it or not, opinions? carries 8 kerbals into orbit, how far into orbit im not 100% sure but im hoping it goes to the mun and back once its finished if i decide to finish it. Roflcopterkklol
An update, it does a 1.5 million km orbit no worries, think it will be a complete re design to fix the fuel flow problem though. think i know what to do too, the mk2 should go a lot further. Giggleplex777
Looking good!As for the nose, my design is basically two tiers of standard nosecones, turned inward so only the black is showing. I believe I used EdExtensions to surface attach them to an octagonal strut. http://i.imgur.com/4rU60yK.pngI also have a circular intake attached to the front node of the Mk3 cockpit to fill in a little space with black. This nose was lower in weight and part count than some of the others I've messed with, so I like it more. Thanks for the advice! I've tried using the circular intakes before with three nosecones and that didn't look right. Tried again and now it looks better, has less parts, and weighs less! Edit: I'm thinking of renaming it. Some possibilities:-Regulus-Telemachus-????I suck at naming things. Edited October 11, 2014 by Giggleplex777
Rune
I'm looking at options to replace the Dart (the big SSTOs look rebuildable more or less easily), I'm almost happy with this:The feature I like is that I'm building it so a) it draws fuel perfectly balanced form both tanks at the same time keeping the CoM more or less static the whole flight (that wasn't nearly as simple as it sounds); and (and this is the most exciting part) it is built so you can take it apart and change mission modules to get the different versions:The middle part is where CoM is, put anything of that size under 2mT in there and the bird will still make orbit, and no need to activate part clipping to put it back on. At least that's the goal. Planned additional modules under testing are airbreathing VTOL with extra liquid fuel and rocket VTOL (and extra endurance for Duna, perhaps with auxiliary chutes). What do you guys think, looking good enough to replace my best seller?Rune. It's a tough legacy to live up to! Giggleplex777
Are you going to use downward pointing cargo bays with an engine for the VTOL version?
Rune
Are you going to use downward pointing cargo bays with an engine for the VTOL version?Of course! Maintaining lift and weight and everything. I'll offer the file with the additional modules stuck to the back, so you just choose which one to put in there, throw the rest without saving, and launch... but the whole fleet looks and (almost) weights the same.Rune. It was kinda obvious, wasn't it? ^^'
RocketPilot573
Oh and I forgot to mention, my shuttle is only 360 parts. The last one with over 600.It should be released today, but the fact that I'm still calling it, "it" is a problem (Actually the current version is called "New Space Shuttle (Done 2.1)"). So I'll be looking into some names...Though New Space Shuttle (Done 2.1) is a pretty good name! Or not.EDIT: Hmmmmmm Edited October 11, 2014 by RocketPilot573

GusTurbo
Wow! Looking at the shape at the back, is this a replacement for the not-yet-updated Mk3 cockpit?Yeah, basically. When I saw your shuttle, I got to thinking about how that cockpit could be used to make a more STS-like nose. I may tack a shuttle on the back of there, or it could be used for a plane. Mainly just a design exercise. Edited October 12, 2014 by GusTurbo

The mk3 cockpit is to too short for the shuttle, so I'm hoping it'll look better with this. Just an experiment.

I hope SQUAD takes notice of this because I ABSOLUTELY would like for the new Mk3 cockpit to look like this. Also, Gus, you got post #1337. Quite fitting for what you made. I sent Rowsdower a PM with a link to your post, so he could pass the idea to the dev team for possible inspiration for new Mk3 parts (hope you're okay with that!). ScriptKitt3h
I've been enjoying some of the new SP+ parts...So far, I'm almost done with this cupcake-inspired VTOL:and a few other projects, including this 2-man SSTO capable of easily getting to LKO with enough LFO in the tanks to possibly get to minmus and back. Also, bombers. Giggleplex777
I attached Odysseus' engine assembly to the nose and redid the wings. Here's the end result:It's a bit too big for the shuttle but damn it looks sleek.
GusTurbo
Oh man, that does look great. You did an awesome job of integrating it into your design. Kudos. As it turns out, my design is a bit too small to make a 2.5m shuttle. I'd have to make some big changes. Here's some more stuff I tacked onto a slightly different, perhaps improved version.
