Awesome parts so far guys. Here is something simple I`m working on:

Awesome! Don't suppose you'd mind sharing how you did the foil effect and how you set it up in unity would you? I've had trouble getting mine to look right. For instance it tends to look better in unity than in game.

Uncheck "Create from Creyscale" and it won't alter the bumpmap like that. (It should give you more control over the results then.)

Not that it looks bad, mind you. That would be a pretty swell foam insulator texture too.

OK here's an update of my part. I want to thank mordin86, tiberion, and frizzank for their help and input regarding better foil. (Even if not all of it was directed towards me) I learned a lot today about normal maps and specular maps.

I also wanted to say thanks again to Nathenkell for his crossfeedenabler plugin, my part now works with it and I've included it in the download.

This looks epic, man. ._.

Neat! (And you're most welcome, obvs!). One thing though--the "crinkles" on the foil look rather large. It gives the effect of a quite small tank, which, since those tanks appear about a meter long each, might not be what you intend?

Maybe you could overlay that with a weaker, smaller set of crinkles?

here is the the final version of my tank with the great crossfeedenabler plugin by Nathenkell (all included in the download). Just ignore the previous links.

You could try smaller set of crinkles but it looks nice as it is now too.

I think the scale of the crinkles if fine, remember these are small parts. I think we all put way more detail in them than necessary, myself included, but that's ok, it was a modeling exercise.

Most of the time your not going to zoom in any more than this when playing the game. So they should look their best at that distance.

That's exactly what I was thinking. They look fine at the relatively normal levels of zoom in your other pictures, it's only the closeup where the crinkles look a little bit deep.

If you're like me this problem of adding too much details is exacerbated by the way I work in Blender. Because I find it hard to work with small parts I do everything at 10X scale in Blender and spend a lot of time zoomed in very close. So by the time I get the parts into KSP I realize that a lot of the detail isn't even visible or noticeable at regular zoom levels.

A lot of my art experience prior to taking up modding comes from miniature painting. Often times with that the most important details are often the ones that you can see across the table. I think this may be the reason I tend to enlarge detail elements a bit as well as exaggerating highlights a bit much at times.

@Orionkermin

I don't suppose you might make a version of that with non-foil plated tanks? I really, really don't like the way gold foil looks. On anything. I just sorta ignore the way LV-909s look. You don't have to, obviously, since that's the only problem I see about the design and it's a problem only I have, but still... Please?

Alright, I took some time today to remap the tanks, split things up so that middle section can be higher rez for the text. Looks good in game now, with bumpmapping. At this point I am calling it done for this one.

Re: scale; It probably needs to be smaller to be appropriate for the specified amount of fuel, which is a simple config edit. That tiny amount of fuel is pretty useless though, so I didn't bother with it. I actually plan to use the part for the basis of something later, anyway.

I'll pack up everything and attach it to this post later.

Here's the download with part folder + UnityPackage. Cfg file has the module for Nathan's xfeed plugin, URL for that is in the README if you can't find it.

And again, I'm not really entering the contest, I was just playing along at home. I need to work on being more efficient, it took me longer than it should have.
