Pet peeves

My pet peeve is the UI in general, that was built mainly using the Kerbal principle of "MOAR menus" across the versions, leading to some quite schizofrenic stuff. Examples:

You want to do a rendevous in map mode? Sure you can do that, but need to hover the mouse over the target ship to know how far you are of it ... what do you mean you want the move the mouse ( for change the image orientation )? Why would you ever do such a thing ? :/ And why the hell would you even think of doing a docking in map mode? No you need eyes on the ship ( you know, like in real life automated ESA ship that takes stuff to ISS ), so we can't tell you the target docking port orientation or distance :/

Or:

You have a contract to fulfill? Ok you can see that intel in the VAB, the SPH, the main menu or the Mission control ( or in flight ). But you better engrave in your mind what missions you have avaliable if you want to go to the tracking station ( for ,you know, go to the ship that has the ability to fulfill that mission that you already launched, but had to do something else in between ) because you can't access it there. And what do you mean you want to know outside of the Mission control what are the rewards of a contract, you lazy sod? Do you actually want to know if the reward you acepted is worthwhile enough to do a mission solely for that contract ? Why would anyone want to do that ?

Or

In the Science archives you can know from what situations you recovered science from. But knowing what science you can still get ( and where you can get it )? Really, what possible reason you could think where having that intel would be useful? ;)

My BIGGEST pet peeve in this game is wobbling docking ports. I know there is the clamp-o-tron senior, but that docking port is just kind of lame/impractical for connecting any command modules with.

The standard docking port should have no bending/wobbling effect IMO. I absolutely HATE it, it looks so cheesy/ridiculous to see a rocket bending and wobbling the way those docking ports do with bigger ships. It also makes anything interplanetary extremely annoying/difficult to fly.

  1. Having to hit the G key twice.
  2. the bugs in unity that create problems w/ x64 users.
  3. the memory limitations that I thought would disappear once I added 8GB more RAM.
  4. Not being able to use the mods I really want to add with my current handful of mods due to the previous 2 items.

You can strut across docking port joints for launch and flight. The struts will disappear the first time you undock (just like they do when you strut between sections separated by decouplers). Build this; launch it; right-click on the docking port and select "Decouple node". The struts all vanish.

Too easy to quit the game. I was working on an elaborate ship in the VAB the other day, and instead of the launch button, I hit the exit button by mistake. By reflex I hit escape, but that took me to the "Start Game" menu, where I clicked Back, thinking it would take me back to my game instead of starting a new one. But that just brought me to another menu, and I just wanted it to quit putting up menus, so I clicked Quit. It asked me if I wanted it to "Really Quit", and of course I did, because I was getting frustrated by this point, and I clicked Yes, really!, and it quit out of KSP completely.

I really think there should be one or ideally two more confirmation dialogs so that the player will understand that the game is about to be closed, because as it is now, it's waaaay too easy to exit unexpectedly.

You just made my day. I'm reposting what you said in the hopes it will make more people's days. :)

  1. Having to hit the G key twice.

I always set the landing gear down in the VAB, then it works first time once you're on the launch pad.

Also handy for testing the length of the legs are longer than any delicate bits on the underside of the craft.

When a maneuver node jitters insanely, changing by about 40 degrees every other second, and you have to time warp to get an approximate position.

I don't know whether this is a mod bug or a ship stability thing, or even if this has happened to other people.

It was a mun orbit insertion burn, so It's not like it was hard to do without the node, but man!

This looked like the build up to a mod or set of instructions for .sfs editing to get it pointing exactly the direction you wanted, but it wasn't.

And yes, occasionally I have had flags pointing in unwanted directions relative to the subject of the shot.

When placing a flag, the game instantly calculates a 12-dimensional matrix of everything within a 2.2 km radius, determines the orientation of the flag that will be most photogenic - and then puts it at 90 degrees to said orientation.

There is, amazingly, a mod for that (I think).

Kashua should be along soon to explain the detailed testing he did on flag orientation (like everything else, there's no messing about) and there was a whole thread about it a while ago.

Yes. MANY times xD. Someone did a video on flag direction by planting something like 30 of them and recording the results. He had some interesting data if I can find it...

EDIT: grahhh can't find it. Anyone else know where it is? Or maybe it was a forum thread?

There is a mod to rotate your planted flag. You will have to dig it out from the question section forum. Its never publish.

Really? I didn't know that! I must find it. Oh and I think I just bumped you to 2 green rep bars...

EDIT: And I'm almost to 1000 posts!

I swear... all I want is the flag to be perpendicular to the direction of the sunlight so that I can, you know, see it in the light. That's ALL I want. But, nooooooooo. It always PARALLELS the sunlight, resulting in an darkened image. (most of the flags I plant are on the equator)

No solar system creator/editor

I want an easy to use Kerbol system editor. I love the game, but I would so invest myself into making places like a fictional Gliese 581 system. I just don't want to struggle like the author of Alternis Kerbol did (but what a good result that was).

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
