Dragon-V2 (duna landing added)

Recommended Posts

Anyone made their versions of Dragon-V2 in ksp yet? It's a pretty interesting capsule from spaceX. I made mine.

Edited a command-pods configuration and added a fuel resource, then used stock parts to make this bad boy. And one DRE heatshield on the bottom.

And an emergency chute.

EDIT:

Here is the duna landing.

Pretty sweet. I was holding my breath while you tried to land.....and then you lost half the engines haha. What does LOMPS stand for? I was trying to figure it out but only got as far as Low Orbit (blank) (blank) Station? Thanks for sharing.

Thanks. It was just an attempt to make a replica, I'm not running a real space program in KSP at the moment so I don't have permanent use for most of ships I make.

Here's my second attempt, this time using 4-fold symmetry.

It's all exercise in heavy clipping but I have not used debug menu yet :)

I'm curious, while equipped with super draco thrusters for landing, just how much room for fuel will be in the capsule?

I'm wondering how much would be needed as they say it will decelerate and then maneuver to land where ever it is targeted. The chutes are a backup.

I just don't see how they'll carry enough fuel for that, the empty pressurized cargo bay would be discarded before re-entry, so it can't be there ...

They actually showed the fuel tanks. Spherical, ~60cm diameter and made of titanium. Afair under a pressure of 1000psi.

You have to keep in mind that the capsule looks extremly light, though. Not even close to the extensive apparatures and interiors of older capsules. Also reminds me of star trek, which is a plus in my book.

Still, a completely self powered landing is impressive.

3-400 m/s dv should be more than enough in ksp.

the 2.5 meter pancake tank give 1100 m/s dv with the 24-77 with an hitchhiker to get 7 man capacity, a 90 liter tank give 330 m/s enough to deorbit from LKO and land

Hello everyone,

I am a first time poster, but a long-time visitor to the forums. After watching the SpaceX presentation of the Dragon V2 and the in-game model being made by LazarusLuan, I decided to assemble a similar functioning module using (almost entirely) stock parts. The heatshield is of course from deadly reentry. Some creative part placement was required, but I think I merely bended the rules a little bit. Hopefully I added the images correctly and will be displayed below:

I love the designs already posted here!! They've inspired me to do my own version;

It's a 5 man variant with a cargo hold that has about 100 days worth of life support (for 5 crew) and two KAS storage containers for restocking stations.

I really wanted a Falcon9 style LV, but that was the hardest bit to get working and rather limits its range to servicing things within a 300km orbit. With a better LV it could go further.

(Does anyone actually know what LV the DragonX V2 will be using?)

I used 2x symmetry on the main craft, so the 4 groups of engines are not evenly placed around the craft (which I think mimics the Dragon V2).

Here be pics;

My take, as the dragon is 7 man I added hitchhiker, an short service module below for landing fuel power and life support.

110 liter fuel gives 389 m/s who is enough to return from LKO and do an powered landing.

This make an good escape system for my 7 man ssto.

Yes it also has be benefit of being an independent spaceship.
