  1. how are the passenger cars connected mate? do they have separate cockpits or SAS moduals by any chance? ive had trains vibrate like that and rip themselves apart from confused SAS, I turn it all off including torque now.. for my trains, there all based off the Infernal Robotics docking washer so they have a steering front wheelset on each wagon like a land train or multi wagon truck.. the traditional sliding style coupled via tank ends using force to steer from the locomotive doesn't work as much now as wheels bounce and skid, very unstable. but having a steering drawbar has enabled things like the jet trains to hit high speeds.. think of HO gauge model train couplers being attached to the bogeys. same thing Downside to this is for stability ive gone with permanently coupled trains now mate.. no shunting these days but.. modern train operations don't shunt anyway and neither did land trains of the cold war.. so its realistic enough. I guess we could use KAS/KIS to unweld something and use the fuel pipe but that resets the root part and with it the IVA kraken comes about wheels are a bit picky too.. I'm still avoiding the rugged wheels and use a modified painted version of the M1s aliasing the model.. I could send them over if you like? these are a tad thirsty though ment for diesels or RTG generation rigs any chance of a video? Id love more detail about what the trains doing wrong btw rover wheelsound makes everything better if you haven't got it back already just tone down the skid sounds a bit Not sure you seen this but heres 705 taking on a mountain. nothing special here except all documented above.. train ties itself in knots when I lose traction but fast forward to a few other advanced bits. the trains generally stable with drawbar steering.. downside is they are more flexable than what we are previously used too (good and bad thing) All and every wheel is powered though.. like a land train was when they were a real thing.. I gave up on the locomotive only drive a while ago Or at speed this one uses aero though to keep the back wagon down.. I don't think the more traditional trains you build would benefit from it.. I do miss my slower more traditional trains though.. the kraken forced me to change
  2. Now.... Dakar Challenge modified Trijet LandTrain 705 ... it happened again.. I never thought it was possible..705 was just a train built for a purpose..even her number was taken from her entry flag.. conquer the Dakar rally then be put Into preservation on her own island.. Proving the capabilities of land trains and restoring glory to KTP in trailblazer 4408s image What actually happened was... the time honoured synergy between youtubes epic music playlists that randomly plays with nothing planned..... land trains...... a train fighting for traction and therefore life... hostile yet beautiful terrain.. and the train herself now more than just a machine or a bunch of parts resembling a train.. slowly gathered her own personality that I begun to understand as she ply the landscape of kerbin.. fearlessly pushing on over hills and mountains best avoided and following the Dakar route as best we could yet.. little more than a speck of white in the grand open spaces of kerbin After battling up a very very steep mountainside that looked so Imposing.. it might as well been a wave.., slipping back, tying herself in knots.. going dark with no headlights to preserve as much power as possible.. she finally made it over the mountain to much celebration.. the horn was sounded continuously and loudly for all to hear.. in the empty wastelands of kerbin.... the fact that theres no one else to hear it ment little.. this was a shout of joy having overcome terrible odds! Playing on youtube randomly was - we sat on the mountain summit for some time to let the RTGs regenerate traction power then released brakes to ease down the mountainside... the terrain just... fell away into a near vertical drop.. the locomotive hit the ground and bounced, wagons bottomed on their suspension and slid over the cliff with all the willingness of crystalised honey from a jar.. but eventually the train was free...this turned out to be a curse more than a blessing Here the speed increased even with full brakes on the entire train Traction motors unwillingly forced by gravity were winding up 20, 30, 40ms... releasing the brake and reapplying did nothing.. eventually something caught.. and she rolled hard for a moment I thought although damaged the locomotive herself would be intact enough to keep going.. injured but with all the resolve of her stablemates before her to keep going.. but it wasn't to be.. she settled on her side...and came to rest... just as youtube was in the middle of playing this song... infact as the music played, it seemed to be writing 705s fate in a way I was powerless stop and only to witness I'm not a fan of resuming lost trains and simply pressing LOAD again.. infact its forbidden in this Dakar Rally Challenge - 705's race is over.. the Landtrain that completed 2 stages of the Dakar rally Kerbal Edition - She did well - and was lost in the grand yet.. regrettable dark traditions of the KTP.. just like all those before her Ive not felt this way since the loss of 4409 back in the elcano challenge.. truly emotional.. unplanned... fate has its way with land trains in KSP.. as a driver for over 2 years of these fine yet deadly machines.. each train is an honour to drive.. each loss is heavy but the honour they gather persists always with me I'll try to bring 705 back to KSC sometime
  3. Tranquil? Calming. neither - Antennas snapped off - 63m/s traction motors screaming - jet boosters pushing speed further into the red.. KSC to mountains in 11 minutes!
  4. its only the large parts that look like anything . simply because kerbals only ever seen mark 2 and 3 in the flesh.. in flyby of the kerbol system or crashed on kerbin itself.. then copied by kerbals mark 1 never had enough range or lost in the black void they were a kerbalisation to provide smaller parts.. made from local and imported ingredients they also may contain nuts
  5. oh! I actually never thought of that..no she wouldnt explode in water not from small distances anyway thankyou.. seems like the best approach ive got alot of experience with trains..used to store them in KSC carpark as the yard.. sadly how trains behave when physics load changes from update to update... from scopion tail trailercars attacking locomotives..to wheels exploding sending parts on a balistic trajectory into space.. (RIP 4016)
  6. needs depth.. something to send shivers down your spine and snap your brain into deadly serious mission mode..or create a xem to question lifes meaning and the true purpose of your mission in space (or driving land trains on kerbin) Battlestar Galactica - Something Dark Is Coming Star Trek TNG - Suite from the innerlight ill update when im home..althougj i use youtube..these should be on spotify
  7. can it be undone at all? sounds like a good idea, rigid meaning less physics or even acting as one baked object ala other games similar unfortunately being able to fire up the old girl, battlescars intact is a big priority might just have to sail across to the island hangers alternatively..anyone got experience with underwater out of physics range? could go all atlantis
  8. is there a way via any command, KOS Command, mod or cheat to unload physics for a vehicle so that it can be put on display safely? im taking a hybrid electric RTG Tri-jet train on the dakar rally. 705 as shes become known. taking race number into the running number and title with her 20+ wheel drive and boosters.. this trains become an absolute symbol of the never surrender motto of KTP land train operations in short 705 needs a home once the rallys complete.. though a train is a physics intensive thing hence needing away to unload physics for preservation permanently coupled discounts simply detaching the control car and id like to keep 705 fully operational for occasional run anyone have any ideas besides making the island runway a museum? sudden physics load can be fatal to trains in my experience thanks in advance
  9. Modify an engine to run off air intake resource then via alternator turn it into oxidizer resource I been doing this with LF fuel to monoprop for locomotives for years
  10. Im a firm believer in pure wheel traction, with '705 the jet engines work a bit like an ion engine in that, theyll hardly move the train on flat level..all.they do is accelerate top speed.. That and thier a nod to earlier trains.. I dont think its a requirement to have jet engines at all Her power comes from the 20 wheel drive, your trucks a beautiful machine Dont be discouraged by the simple wheelbase.. Time acceleration itself might be the bigger enemy as it tends to increase forces. I know not everyone likes to drive realtime but..careful and defensive driving would win out to more power under time acceleration I feel Dont worry about times im not..like yourself simply completing this route is a happy achievement itself of both machine and her driver Best of luck to you
  11. there were a few horrible moments In 2 where I just had to push the throttle forward and hope the trains engineering design held up. she did. but it could have gone either way especially if I'm not using a steering wheel with fine adjustments. still. even with over 2 years of land train experience.. its been a challenge.. in the past on these kind of steep drops and climbs ive had the benefit of 2 locomotives with sanders (RCS) pushing down for traction, 705 has no such thing.. her stability depends on aero speed.. ive made the full video of stage 2 if youd like to see in the results thread
  12. She survived Stage 2 nicely ) Thanks Waiting to see how she does with stage 3, looks a bit tame in comparison to 2.. ive taken this route before in early landliner trains on the elcano route
  13. (calculation once finished) 0:01:00 - Departed @ Stage 1 flag 00:21:37 - Arrived @ Stage 2 flag 01:04:08 - Arrived @ Stage 3 flag - Stage 3 - DNF - EDIT: 16/ 1 RESUMING stage 4-Finish when I happen to get home from work early enough (3 hours from work to home) but! hopefully soon!.. 705s a fine machine.. one of the best in the history of the KTP Aiming for tomorrow! not sure if it breaks the rules but!. the Dakar course will be conquered by a train.. the first of many journeys of this class of train I hope. this unit herself will find a home In preservation once the race is finished Stage 1 I ended up adding more fuel under the false ideal that I simply didn't have enough, the locomotive was drinking fuel like theres no tomorrow.. so I added MOAR tanks!!.. Then... discovered I simply didn't have the hardpoint crossfeed on.. 9000 fuel.. meh. I'm not complaining I didn't take a normal screenshot of stage 1 start but I did take a full video, screenshot is from the video - Video has a big pause in it departing the flag but otherwise is fine after it (loading music) Waiting for the clock to tick over to 1.00 - STAGE 2 - Plenty of hairy moments where I thought id lose the whole train.. moments of madness running full speed down sides of mountains in hopes of making it back up the other side..with the only damage being one blade of the cow catcher.. then the other side.. basically headbutting a mountain The train slipping back and being tied in knots, and moments where the wheels bottomed out so bad.. the train was a seesaw on the crest of hills had to turn off headlights and beacon as even 1 second of electricity matters when you need to squeeze everything out of the trains propulsion systems to stop slipping back or inch over the side of a mountain with gravity pulling the other way it was far too intense to take screenshots a lot.. but the video captured all around 1 hour in total.. so here's the highlights - and PROOF I did it realtime with no cheating.. see. trains are awesome Red Time index are linked as one generally complete event 4:12 Train Knots 24:00 - Struggle Climb 2 26:25 - FLANK SPEED! Mountain!! (Lost Cowcatcher 1) 31.45 - Trapped at Summit - out of power 37:00 - Trapped Resumed - LocoSeesaw 40:32 - Resolution! 42:10+ - Rough Going - 42:40 Extreme braking - 43:30 Kiss of the mountain! - (Lost Cowcatcher 2) 46:40+ - ALL or nothing! 49:39 - FULL POWER! 52:04 - Flag in sight - I know my train well - Homerun! the most extreme terrain ive purposely driven on in a train.. she did very well.. if she survives back home she'll be given a proper running number and assigned to the regular roster of land trains.. beautiful machine STAGE 3 - **DNF**
  14. shes a beautiful machine! glad to see some others take up the all wheels driven caterpillar.. conquerer of hills, slaughter or downgrades.. traction FTW 705s coupled with IR free docking washers, Ibeams and non steering rear wheels borrowed from the KSC1 class locomotives ive driven before, surprisingly flexable yet stable
  15. Officially underway! Sorry 44 class.. diesel electric 75 tons simply too heavy and complex. for these situations, we roll back to 2014 with the original LL1001 class Landliners Antennas snapped off at 61ms.. and nothing exploded Good times
  16. Could I have an entry number please? Ill add it to the locomotive running number
  17. Havent been for a run over 80km in some time roverdudes crane bits were the missing bits i need for couplings that dont use steering drawbar common in later trains.. I know the area well though..illl be sure to take a fluffycloud plane out first though results thread looks great so far With all the errors with kerbin terrain and wheel problems..this might just be the challenge to give kerbin ground pounders back the glory of the good old days
  18. Little late but found this thread intime Ill be sending a 4 car train consisting of locomotive, fuel tank and utility/service car with a spare locomotive on the back on the weekend Diesel electric 44 class with B unit 4408 Mk3
  19. Ill take a run in this, leaving this post as a placeholder Ill take the KSC crew tram.. Shes never seen outside of KSC working Top speed of 12 ms though No reason why her battery banks and RTGs wont handle having all 12 wheels driven..once at cruise itll taper off Put me in the hybrid category though might bring a diesel generator for steep climbing Ill give her a bit of a paint for the occasion start friday
  20. Well if its going to be a movie by a mainstream company like dreamworks Then its going to follow the standard game movie genre 1. Kerbals will be red not green..and not come from Duna kerbin..but have been buried underground for millions of years..choosing to surface after a thunderstorm and the presence of Tom Kerman ... contrary to source material 2. KSC will be an american town..not Kerbal Space Center..contrary to source material 3. Kerbals themselves will sound like electric bass guitars and turn everyone to ash..a plane will crash for no reason and humans fleeing the kerbal onslaught will choose a brightly lit ferry glowing with more light than the sun contrary to source material 4. A train will be on fire.. Actually the entire movie will be ABOUT trains..everything trains..kerbal train program!!! Land trains with kerbinov cockpits numbered after NSW railway locomotives.. Thousands will die fleeing the kerbal fighting machines.... Because trains kill (alot) based on a true story 5. Matt Kermon will need to be rescued..again in some situation What? It doesnt sound like kerbal space program the movie? Of course it does!! Just like streetfighter was EXACTLY like the game and mario brothers was about 2 italian plumbers stomping on turtles happily
  21. Not so much a pun but a workable idea for an animation based on my experiences A young kerbal just graduates training proudly.. Speaks to his family whos smiles melt away into expressions of a terrible surprise.. They break down in tears and sadness Hes not a pilot of rockets and planes This ones a train driver of the KTP He'll be dead by the end of the day
  22. @Spacetraindriver You are lucky sir that I drive a land train, thus able to change direction at anytime rather than a train on rails greetings to you
  23. Theres nothing elitist about posting stock craft on the spacecraft exchange..having the stock tag means anyone can use.it..for better or worse In this ipad generation some people wince at opening any kind of file explorer..skills once normal and taken for granted have been lost Stock is simply a collection of mods that comes in the tin.. I only use 3 mods..because I like whst i use..i also.have a personal collection.of mods ive modded for me The detriot and EMD diesel monoprop gensets derived from sam halls minijet that I use on diesel electric locomotives.. I use this..no one else does.. If i were to put a craft on the exchange itd be [STOCK] Only because people dont have mods I use.. Alot of people hate downloading a.mod specificly for a craft too.. Its another thing to clutter the SPH build.menu.. Ksp takes long enough to.load. With more content it takes longer People WANT things made stock and added by squad because of this..stability,compatabilty, and not having to hunt for x mod Theres nothing elitist about stock.. Some of its rather plain..lifeless.. Inferior But... Everyone has it..and it works with craft designed so Its not a dig at you..but..i.do.see that in the minds of some, your poll and.post could be seen as division..trolling The kerbal komunity is better than this
  24. I have: A Athlon dual core x64 3.0ghz CPU rather below the minimum requirements of i3, 4gb of ram and a Radeon 6900 My steering wheel is a non force feedback MC2 Madcatz Xbox360 steering wheel..my joystick is the only decent thing being a Logitech something or-other and even that's sad because back in the day I took PRIDE in what joysticks I had , my wingman extreme 3d and Microsoft sidewinder precision pro 2 was the pride of my computer.. ive let things go a bit.. my PC is recycled basicly.. And!. the one before it was an old WX4600 HP workstation that took ECC registered ram so never saw above its 2gb of ram and GTX260 running on a powersupply that ,... shouldnt and you know what?! I make do, infact a few dear friends ive met here make do also with recycled PCs having given up on the arms race.. and they make do and love it its NOT what your computer can do for you, its what YOU can do with your computer Enjoy what you have.. tone down details.. build smaller ships. abandon spaceflight entirely.. if you cant do a thing, its not the end of the world.. its the start of a whole new world that you craft into something else awesome following what others do then being disappointed when it fails is no fun.. walking to the beat of your own drum.. that's the real stuff of happiness
