Ohh interesting..post pics when you can..video would be great too Thanks mate i didnt see your first post. Had a strange situation where the parts were empty in the legacy folders but i think it was my failing One thing im considering for bogeys (trucks) is would it be possible to make a thing similar to the free docking washer but act like that nose wheel landing gear in that it rotates left and right according to input of axis? Akin to putting an attachment node on a steerable landing gear? It has some uses for articulated vehicle steering and trains..one of the sno trains used a mid loco articulation joint similar to say a front end loader or case quadtrac (yep i play farming sim too )

Indeed how kerbal! -
Thats how my 44 class have run for years..its a delicate balence i keep having to reset and find the sweet spot in the power curve after each version though Wheels are modded to accept monoprop from the modified minijet alternator..it takes alot to find the ballence..testing..trial and error.. But eventually the units syncronise enough to provide a realistic power and torque transmission thats dictated by engine RPM..engauged either by my steeringwheel pedal or trim acting as the reverser Its not strictly by the numbers though and requires 2 engines for some reason even with the numbers the same on a single alternator.. But the end goal was always the same.. Locomotive climbing a hill with engine at full warcry..generators running hot creating a beautiful emotional battle between terrain..tollerences of the locomotive..sheer luck and driver experience Sometimes it ended badly..but a proper diesel electric like transmission in ksp writes its own legends and I encourage any serious drivers to try similar..its one of the best experiences in gaming

Thanks for this @BadLeo its not necroposting at all given this is a train thread Many thanks for the update..the inability of the docking free turning washer to work in 1.2 was what stalled my.own trains likewise even when wheels became stable finally i.used them for steering drawbars as mentioned previously I love to.see a proper flexable coupling though looking to get back into land trains tonight I did download the IR beta but it contained no parts? Is it ment to apply to the part set to get them all working?

What if KSP were to reach 2.0? What would happen?
Overland replied to Sanguine's topic in KSP1 Discussion
It would have spiders at night Because EVERY. Open world game has bloody spiders at night -
Ahh unrelated then..best of luck solving it..IVAs seem to suffer alot..and for alot of us..its a critical part of flying and driving
-
Is it related to the train bug by any chance? Inner cockpits actually detach and follow the root parts axis if a ships bendy .or has two cockpits like a DMU either end..looks similar..sad really..goes back years

Im mad because docking ports dont flex anymore! But im un-mad because i found the magnettic effect makes good couplings (and theres an infernal robotics 1.2 beta) We all change how we do things for a while before settling back to awesome better than before Happens to alot of people.. You just have to re-learn or maybe in my case with docking ports as railway couplings..I was using a bug that squad fixed If your having trouble getting planes off the ground before 1.2 id suggest your skills need to be brushed up..i find aero to be great in 1.2 I dont mean it in an insulting way.. Ditch the how to videos and read up on how and why planes fly..apply that to ksp And the wright brothers craft barely flew. KSP deserves a better comparison -
New inventions, life support, parts...
Overland replied to Darnok's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Trains as in rail guided vehicles have been proven to work before many versions ago.. No reason why they wouldnt now but as is said we need proper terrain level rails (or splines) That said though it IS KSP in the way that it doesnt have to be..conventional Land trains like thier railbound sisters provide a realistic option, one that had several examples in the realworld..and still does in the case of self steering trailers of airport baggage and dotto trains .. They do need a dedicated controller though mostly such as the steering wheel I use Other options are also realistic such as having steering only respond decently below 5ms and anything above it restricted to 3 degrees or less Still though waves can and do idevelop in longer land trains that prove fatal.. Larger mark 3 sized wheels for landship sized trains would reduce it though Rail wise..we may only need a single guiderail and modified landing gear that can enclose that rail when so desired..switching tracks could then be done by raising the guidewheel into off-track running..driving to the desired branchline then on a straight section..lower the.guide wheel Not conventional to some...but there have been many realworld examples of such Eg https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardier_Guided_Light_Transit How to transport trains...well they can be made to fly- 17 replies

I Voted no . I have 2 installs of KSP 1.1.3 Kerbal Space Program 1.1.3 - Kerbal Land-Train Program The former is used only for testing mods to make sure they work with the latest vanilla program The former has everything space capable and unworthy removed for quick load times and purity It is ruled by trains..and enough parts to make an emergency hand-glider for locomotives and parts if a train crashes but isnt fatally wounded .recoverable and capable to get underway again without driving a replacement train from KSC to outside of the 30km mount-KSC loop line terminator border checkpoint where a train is dependant on herself

What do you think of science-to-tech research mechanic?
Overland replied to Wjolcz's topic in KSP1 Discussion
KSP is much much much more than a game with missions or a specific way of doing things. far more than that.. I strongly believe the missions and science modes are more of an introduction to the universe that is lovingly crafted in KSP rather than any kind of end game or be all end all of anything none of it gauges success in any measure of the word what so ever, progression is many things to many people, seas are able to sailed, dived.. some of us sail ships across these vast oceans. its progress to some. and many.. I myself drive trains.. my success hasnt been dictated by any mission limitation but rather distance.. within kerbin and mods created to do so.. I think focusing on missions alone as any end all and be all of KSP gameplay is a little. self limiting. as is thinking space is the everything of KSP, I assure you greatly it isnt (sorry I must have posted it before I finished) -
KSP for me became the ultimate simulator of what I wanted.. I own many train simulators..played them since the good old EN57 Mechanik dos based train simulator.. Followed the rail simulator scene for over a decade...theres a trend that came with it that seemed to me like the more advanced they got the more soul they lost Ive driven real trains...I love it... But each dedicated simulator just seemed progressively sterile It had been my life long dream to have a good train simulator...yet..it feels so empty The charm and soul stays with trains in rigs of rods, gmod..and yes KSP..sandboxes free to grow A dedicated detailed simulator is a tightly bound box which you cant escape..a kind of jail for the feelings and enjoyment Many years ago a fateful plane crash would irreversably join the two in kerbal space program.. A downed plane crashed on hostile terrain...one crash became two...then 5.. Maybe it would have been easy to land a rocket.. But i never thought of it A train came to mind...one built out of sam halls KN2 cockpit and mini jets..the jets propelled a train to break the silence of no wheelsounds They never got near that downed plane... Because it didnt matter anymore.. The landliner was born Ugly and with a face akin to a cylindrical pug.. These trains soon grew thier own legend.. Far outwaying any simulator..a wheel was purchased and so became KSP my goto rail simulator..without rails.. The evolved quickly..yet death was an everpresent force .each new generation having to rescue..recover or bury thier dead From jet propelled screamers to EMD engined proper diesel electrics running on KSPs stock power/torque/speed physics.. To detriot engined growling machines .. Rails were a thought of the past... As was space It broadened my rail hobby to include trackless trains..dotto trains and cold war land trains..even discovering a hidden history of land trains in my native australia way before the modern road train KSP.. What does it mean to me....progress..beauty...a real true culture of its own..and trains..many trains.. Im not sure why its called kerbal space program actually... It means happy

With a former top speed of 31ms..life was short..the typical run being 80km as a round trip..life was short..drives long if lucky Since the change from heavy narrow bodied diesel electrics to RTG powered sure footed land trains with a top speed of 15ms.. Things survive longer and drive for hours Here lies the beauty of locomotive classes..grab a class leader..fire up cooltext for some class numbers.. Add a few extras mission specific like extra headlights or some KIS boxes Choose cargo type from sub assembly Click launch 1004 is born.. And realtime hours are spent driving This is why im proudly a land train driver.. Time acceleration is never used and each kilometer is earned.

On a flash drive sits 4016.. Seen here in happier times Wounded from an encounter with the rough sea of green and black at night She remains short hood forward with trailing tanker cars supporting the long hood.. Driven on her last ounce of strenth and capability to bombo outpost It was the last of my elcano challenge She remains timeless on that flash drive because modern wheel physics cant handle 1.5 tonne locomotive wheels that served all the KTP so well.. Indeed they detonate on loading with so much force they hit escape velocity I cant bring myself to simply delete her.. One day ill make new wheels and tow her back home..she deserves better

I experimented with train length vs maximum speed on my old computer before getting a new one soon Ive done extensive realworld research into "land trains" specificly the dotto type and AEV type trackless trains and trams around sydney, visibly inspecting the technology on how to apply it to KSP and my upcoming diesel locomotive modeled on a 2ft gauge prototype (with rubber tyres) It seems KSP wheels have stablised since I was last in.. because this went well. even upto the interesting speed of 25ms without failure, A curious number since realworld trackless trains are limited to 25kph and below.. furthermore even the massive monster sized sno trains only did 33kph.. KSP simulates this perfectly ive noticed, what was once considered a flaw in the physics seems to have been a genuine challenge in the realworld Soo.. howd she go? Quite well! Leaving KSC for the flatlands testing ground executing a 90 degree turn at 15ms with minimal correction, everything following the leading car as if she was on rails at this speed, the dance between physics. train momentum, framerate and land train capability reaching a sweetspot.. no longer just a 4 car entity feeding on its own wagon fuel stores, the KSP land train mirrors her own sugartrain and narrow gauge railbound cousins as a practical transport system In attempts to challenge her capabilities , it was tried to loop the train onto herself it never happened.. instead executing a wonderful constant circle of safety Sadly it was then time to push things until it broke in the name of science.. starting a turn at 24ms... train physics in effect saw the locomotive start to roll.. with the rest of the train upright.. slowly one by one the wagons turned.. hit the ground and their cargo exploding on contact In a departure from the purely lethal history of the KTP and the general ideal that the survival rate of locomotive crew outweighs the surval rate of the most insane rocketry and aeronautics ... by order of several thousand tonnes headed ...down.. While the train did detonate her cargo.. the locomotives being powered by RTG these days vs being rolling fuel tanks ment that the crew survived..with even the train herself being able to be put back into service after being rerailed

What is the most badass thing you have done in KSP?
Overland replied to RenegadeRad's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Although in a different way to the glory days of land trains, sacrifice..tearjerking losses of trains and the everpresant darkness that surrounds it Id have to give my bragging rights to making KSC a game itself Forgetting kerbin entirely and ferrying kerbals around KSC in a 4 car tram Learning all the taxiways. Sidestreets and that the launchpad is a bloody long way from VAH in a train with a top speed of 7ms The most badass thing? Nothing died!!! -
Electric Propellers
Overland replied to JMBuilder's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I wholeheartedly support the idea.. I know theres mods for it, but im struggling with just how to propel an RTG powered electric locomotive across water while keeping her more or less stock from original function water has become such a big part of KSP with the water physics upgrade.. yet we're stuck with jet turbines.. and no stock propellers to speak of.. granted alot has been made of "too much planes!" but stock is good, especially now PS4 and xbox have their version without mods they cant let the vast oceans of kerbin and the like go unexplored or just explored by the likes of a much slower very low down plane as recent (and trim works fine for stock rover wheels pegging the throttle) -
Tokamak Industries Refurbished Parts - Learning feedback thread
Overland replied to Tokamak's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
Greetings good presumed to be sir. or madam if is the case.. you are a wonderful modeler of IVA views, I really admire your tallent.. vs learning myself blender which. coming from a 3d max background is like the... well.. its not nice to un-learn would you be interested in modeling Mk1 cockpit for me (Possibly mark 1 and a bit) not without its compensation.. say a nice expensive steam game or some DLC gifted? ive been looking for months of someone likewise skilled as yourself.. and although this sounds like the typical african scam of some sort, I assure you its 100% legit What am I after? well.. A cab (standalone) box shaped etc for this.. or something like it -
May I suggest Fengist's Elcano Challenge.. it gave me a part of my life I never knew was missing.. while totally up ending my interest in trains from railbound to land-trains.. a story in itself. KSP is what you make it.. BUT.. find something to grab onto.. and you become what KSP makes you.. I mean no pun by that.. my own elcano challenge has stalled pending rework for some locomotives and modeling of a dedicated class.. but the achievements, losses and victories remain a part of my soul in a way a game never has.. it'd be easy to say its all me. but its not.. squad crafted beautiful planets.. some I feel dont get the attention they deserve.. I know wheels are a bit iffy right now. but build a good vehicle.. plug in a steering wheel or a joystick, a few good mods like wheelsound.. .. to each their own I know.. but from experience. .it'll draw you in and never let go.. Kerbin is an amazing place.. if only you let it in.. so much more than just a ever smaller green and blue dot in the rear view mirror.. Kerbin is home for kerbals.. mine too.. im damn proud of that.. while it didnt start with a challenge.. the challenge is what made already existing ideas grow a life of their own Get some good music playing. associate that with kerbin. find something you admire vehicle wise.. it will grow its own legends in time I assure you greatly NO time acceleration.. just NO!.. if its not space. theres no need for it its taken me 1 year and a half. ive not attempted driving on kerbin long distance for a while. months.. but im not giving up.. not until I see the KSC go from a tiny spot to a full featured building.. with a sense of home after a long terrible journey.. be it diesel electric locomotive, steam powered.. passenger tram or .. dotto train.. its a long term goal. I just wish I could share the feeling directly rather than words Nassault does a good job of it though in his Kerbal Movie a little on the ideas front of my past exploits.. KSC passenger tram.. KSC herself much like kerbin is an amazing place.. go for a drive . transport some kerbals rather than simply loading up crew.. its great and oldie bit still good.. 4427 inbound to KSC and 4016 coming home.. im proud to say this made me tear up when it happened. .if you dont understand now.. you should after a long drive on kerbin with hundreds dead. .getting home in one peice.. its a rare treasured thing out of ideas. never.. your just not thinking outside the box.. space is black and boring.. kerbin is where its at

[WIP] Kerbals 1869 - New! Pre Release Trailer! 8-2-16
Overland replied to Fengist's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
Greetings my good friend @Fengist the catalyst into my insanity that is the land train... that oddly..overtook their railbound sisters recently in preference hobby wise, sorry I havent dropped by yet.. I owe you a great gratitude, as it was your elcano challenge that gave life and purpose to the legend that grew around experimental land trains.. into a life of their own beyond my wildest imagination.. Rest assured ive not stopped my challenge but rather put it in a siding while I work on a dedicated land train Your recent trainified creations are a beautiful thing ive not tried them yet but rest assured they'll have a good home on the KTP.. I never got the chance to drive your paddlewheeler.. is she compatable with current KSP? they remind me alot of the dotto/Kotto train whimsicalness.. the original company of the land train... while im hoping to model my own in the near future.. perhaps I can leave this here for some inspiration for yourself in the meantime? any train is a good thing (please ignore the intro, ive hopefully skipped through it..I dont speak italian.. but they're very proud of what they make.. its one of the most.. Kerbal thoughts that trains such as these can in the near future find a place on kerbin in basic operation the later models seem to be diesel constant generator electric drive, easily achieved in KSP -
What was the craziest thing that happened in KSP?
Overland replied to Wildcat111's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Was a long time ago now during the 40 class diesel mainline days..where docking ports were still flexable I forget her running number but a 40 class locomotive and a short range 3 car tanker train had been running hot for some reason and suffered a twin generator failure some 50km out from KSC. With no batteries to speak of she became cold and dark quickly as the last of the power in the system drained on headlights.. As was usual in them days i didnt set the parking brake as she was on flat land..disembarked the kerbals and fired up a another train at ksc to rescue her A nice eventless drive at moderate speed with the rescue train followed..engine at mid throttle having the reverberation arguement.. Calming 25 ms..terrain ups and downs flowing like a green sea.. With the distance counter slowly ticking down.. I got the rescue train near by shortly after..physics paused and struggled to load 2 trains but then settled.. Then..it happened..the striken 40 class loco started to slowly roll..possibly jolted by physics enough to push.. While she was on flat land..it was a plateu of hills nearby..sure physics would stop her at 600 meters but.. Its a long way for an unmanned train.. Before i knew it she was sliding down a hill nose first picking up speed.. No kerbals aboard and no way to stop the locomotive.. I take my trains seriously . This was a numbered loco..losing one is a big deal Thankfully the rescue train much like her sistertrain was a 40 class too. The design had couplings on front and rear.. The only way to stop the runaway was fly coupling.. Unstable terrain and unsafe speeds followed.. I fired up the locos engines juggling her own safety as well as the runaway..hitting 25ms on a diagional incline..careful steering on a knife edge of safety.. Eventually lining up the front coupling with the rear tankers coupling 4 trys later...success.. The camera centered..engines went to idle..she'd coupled! A worthy epic moment of joy and tears (really...) I slammed the rescue trains reverser into reverse and revved the generators to full redline rpm..both locomotives now feeding off just 2 engines started reversing..brakes were applied and the 2 trains stopped safely.. It was the most epic and emotional moment in KTP history id experienced.. Amazing stuff..purely so -
A little update on this thread less about KSP so much as a resource.. I found accidently when searching for blueprints on the more conventional type fairground land trains.. it would seem a french design known as the Renard land train was in service throughout the world from 1900s upto around 1920s.. from australia, egypt, india and suchlike.. its design I tested in KSP and.. in a wonderful everything old is new again ideal. it actually worked better than the trains ive had previously.. on further research it appears a few were owned by actual railway companies as an extension of their non rail reaching operations.. passengers and freight respectively the design seems unique in that the center wheel of each wagon is fixed and driven by the prime mover of the locomotive.. although reports differ between some kind of gearing and electric power via generation.. which seems more likely.. the front and rear wheels turn as a conventional steering trailer as mentioned in this thread a little earlier one of these old girls was actually found in a ghost town in australia in the 1970s, it would appear a few still exist preserved and operational.. it bears a resemblence to the one used in the boer war and world war 1 but im not sure if its the same rig or just similar.. interesting none the less From a KSP Point of view.. their real world operation and failures of the design mirrors oftern seen problems in KSP land trains.. the ever present cutting of corners of the rear wagons, tail whip and suchlike.. would seem arnt a failing of KSP or our designs at all.. but were actually something to be mindful of on these real world examples.. a comforting and disturbing thought all the same it has inspired me too, to branch out from pure fuel delivery trains and create a more multi purpose train.. while this one doesnt have the center wheels, shes become a capable impressive train.. full torque at 8m/s.. a maximum speed of 21m/s and a safe cruise of around 17. much different from her small medium range sister trains.. at this point my systems weakness is playing a part in train length more than actual practicality I'l update this section as I learn more, its an evolving chapter in land train history im slowly finding out more on that im sure will be as helpful to others as me
