driving the Puma Rover Puma Class Overland Train Testing future long haul high capacity fuel haulage for an outlying refinery/launch base She does her creator proud, the puma rover system excels at being a land train both in placement of nodes, overall stability and durability I must also say, her once ugly looks have grown on me shes beautiful

The launch of a new diesel locomotive..having finished yard trials Something thats yet to happen in 1.1, sure ive driven solar electric hybrid trains..having got them to work is nice But nothing beats the pride mixed with sadness of seeing a new diesel head off into the world Starter motor fires.. The air above the loco gets filled in a thick cloud of smoke that rotates..tumbles and disapears White turbine smoke takes its place..each puff of white smoke fighting for its place in the sky Detriot engines now alive get revved up to energize the traction motors and bring the front wheelset out of unpowered state Be she a 44 or 40.. Or any manner of new locomotives. The dance is always the same.. A once dark lifeless collection of space parts, struts and wheels..is now a living locomotive.. Headlights ablaze..diesel engine heart beating at a low idle Air brakes hiss as thier released from the locomotive.. Horn blasts to announce to all of kerbin.. A new locomotive is about to set foot on the land.. 5ms yard speed out of the taxiway..over the runway..wheels touch the grass..engines spool to 100% ..speed climbs to 30ms Shes away.. Another loco of the KTP flew the nest.. Fighting against the lethal history of her kind Its always as beautiful as it is sad

Im getting crashes in SPH entirely.. Usually when unhooking something from a node or say rearranging engines..the 5 second silence then seeing the white light of death Its common.. KAS/KISS helps with long well equipt trains more akin to rolling bases than transporting anything.. Thus keeping out of coupling things in the SPH Im also not using docking ports anymore as couplings. Trains are permanently coupled with explosive emergency coupling release The lack of docking ports has done alot in framerate increase

I got to get trains fully working again first Solar battery electrics powered by a backup plutonium battery is all nice n all.. but it lacks the defining chug of the detriot engine.. that and.. Ive got bad feels.. regret.. sadness.. sorrow See I perverted 4429 in the course of making a hype train for 1.1, ripped off her class number.. replaced it with hype train.. modified the exhaust to spit flames.. even abused the wagons, failing the last 2 wagons wheels.. never before in the history of the KTP have I so purposely undertaken abuse of a treasured member of my locomotive fleet and flagship of the program The screenshot ended up looking like something out of war of the worlds.. impressively so.. yet somehow, disturbingly. it foretold the future My trains exploded the moment they loaded in 1.1.. likely due to the wheels weighing 1.5 tonnes and other factors.. it was horrible.. dishearting.. inhumane.. with a shadow of evil and darkness , we need the PC version fixed, atleast to 1.04 standards with increased framerate before we get excited about anything on console, Plus.. hype train suggests PC, large, impressive.. powerful. capable.. a humming box of electronics akin to a diesels engine room so.. without further delay, Let me present the hype train - for xbox Hype train for console Or more to the point - a port of an existing thing.. into something else

1.1 gives good framerates with longer trains for me..its also added skid sound and exploding wheel sound in the rover wheel sound mods...so with a little modification. Im able to put an alarm system on the rear most wagon so I get an audible alarm if she starts to sway and risk derailing Once I killed off the suspension which causes ALL problems with wheels.. Things are ok for me..im loving it Shes a fussy beast though..crashes alot in the SPH but never outside on a run Scrap mechanic and homebrew sandbox arnt going to replace KSP as my beloved land train simulator. While im tempted to say "yet". I simply cant Ive been with KSP since the early days..some updates have rendered it unplayable on my aging PCs.. But in the end its come good.. With KSP Becoming a part of my life somewhat with an engrained culture and story of its own.. I take the good with the bad . Most if not all my favorate games are in or from early access..sometimes updates kill them too But in the end im damn glad KSPs come as far as it has.. There aint no land trains or diesel electrics in orbiter sim.. And the other engineering sandboxes lack entire planets So..it set me back... Cost alot of time and indeed a sense of real sadness and loss when I saw locomotives and wagons explode upon loading with so much force..wheels went into space when I loaded up 1.1+ from 1.04 But slowly the tradition rebuilds and with every great achievement comes setbacks But.. Its progress im happy with It

I want to thankyou for a beautiful machine youve made, with a little modification to entirely squad default wheels and nothing done to the rover herself.. shes become a very capable fuel transfer and rescue train.. sure footed, powerful with her own beauty thanks to the raw industrial look once a stepping stone before I got back into fully diesel electric trains.. the puma class land train has now found its place in the KTP While it might seem alot of her attributes are down to the modified wheels.. the weight, shape, stability and flexability real compliment one another to make the class a very capable machine.. that im jealous to say by far outweigh the very trains that were once seen as pride of the fleet using a free turning docking port washer under the leading wheel mount for a steering drawbar.. she'll wrap around the taxiways of the KSC and track as though she had steel wheels and flanges of railbound cousins I hope im not going against the grain by saying too the mark 1 cockpit is the perfect placeholder.. ive always loved the cockpit itself but hated how the outside looked.. the puma fixes that The other day during articulation trials - top speed 40m/s - no suspension or dampening set.. all dialed down And here we have her on a full revenue run with a small 2 car train slaughtering the hills like they wernt there.. EDIT: new run screenshots The entire train is powered (could we have some nice repaints too? possibly industrial looking with wash stripes each end?) Edit - Simple camo repaint with paint.net and some layering if your ever looking for ideas on the less, industrial kind that I believe would be the perfect crew transfer vehicle and short range explorer

I put them on sidewards at first..eg suspension facing backwards..it didnt click until they just spun on the runway check to see if they are Ohhh and good news on the couplings we need a proper overland train for the masses..beautiful
-
Ill make a video tonight showing a comparison, but this rover vs something like the puma makes articulation difficult When I connect any trailers with a free spinning docking washer they tend to overrun the locomotive and jackknife alot because the drawbars not mounted to the wheel steering system but rather a hitch on the wagon itself There 2 different machines though, I understand this one was never ment to be a land train.. shes a beautiful well thought out machine that im sure is both very loved by those who drive her and appreciated in many different roles, some maybe not originally envisioned The lack of a center mounted attachment node on the wheel mounts is whats making the difference with bring unstable when in land train mode Ive discovered having a free turning docking washer bolted tothe drawbar makes superior stable articulation possible.. Much like an old stagecoach Could we maybe have an extra part with a center node on the wheel mountings to use with trailers this way? I apologise for the lack of pictures .. On my bus to work at the moment but ill clean up the post tonight with videos and pictures I dearly do think such a simple addition would have great benefits
-
LAND-TRAIN!!!!! (looks a tad like alaskan freightlines snow frieghter ) Im on a bus right now but... Ill be busy when I get home in 2 hours Thankyou roverdude ok, played with it for a while, shes a beautiful machine very graceful and powerful, also loving the wheels any chance you could put another attachment node though on the wheel mountings? say on bottom not just either side so we can put an articulation point there? but I know for 99.9999% of what people are going to use it for, it probably wont matter Thanks for a really great rover. train or not shes going to get a long drive on weekend

What screen capture/gameplay recorder do you use?
Overland replied to Kuansenhama's topic in KSP1 Discussion
My rig is an aged dual core.. But runs OBS nicely.. Took a while to find the right settings to be not choppy but it does well once I did.. Trains arnt the easiest framerate friendly thing. But this was 1.04, my rig then was a 2gb ram 3.0 core2duo.. Low but OBS did nicely -
Seeing the home signals come into view at the end of the runway after a long drive.. Sounding the horn to announce my presence into the yard..giving the train one final squirt of throttle...hearing the engine settle to a low idle KSC runway lights either side slowly sailing by.. Im home Hit the brakes a tad to swing the nose of the locomotive onto the taxiway and into the stabling area Doesnt matter if its KSP .90, 1.0 to 1.04 or 1.1 thats slowly taking shape 44 class, 40 class, Kerbaliner Trijet, or modern day puma derived experimental trains Coming home with a heavy train..always has felt like just that.. Home

In my latest episode of newly (re-?)discovered articulation and trainyness, It was discovered that adding a powered swivel docking washer to the front bogey of the locomotive for use in emergency situations where she had to turn tightly due to reverse not being possible more or less.. enabled me to do a magic trick! you know the one where someone ties a knot in string them pulls it.. and its magicly undone.. well watch this Yep! I went there No explosions! I guess its not oftern you get a rocket able to tie itself in knots.. thus it wasnt considered to be a bad thing ALLLLLMOST! TADAAAAA! ok back to serious trainness.. tomorrow

I wanted to see the space train big one

KSP getting boring? I want to get back into it.
Overland replied to ZedSpace's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Dont goto space..explore kerbin..shes a beautiful place..even more so if you have scatters on full and atmospheric scatter mod to make meaningful sunrises Use a steering wheel.. Build a caravan of supplies..put some music on and have ksc slowly get smaller in the distance while mountains youve only flown across grow to gigantic intimidating monsters that demand respect Know kerbin..know your vehicle.. Its just you and a vast landscape of emptyness..devoid of people..just landscapes and vistas Its easy to get so engulfed in it..you start to feel...alone Civilisations gone..your all.thats left All realtime... No timewarp Give it a go..feel what it is to be one with kerbin A terrifying and beautiful experience when its under your skin For inspiration and a preview of what you face.. Watch nassault's "Kerbal" movie Its more fact than fiction I promise you -
Fighting the good fight, finding light in 1.1s darkness: Increased smooth framerates letting me use 8 car trains where 4 would previously be enough.. coupled with superior articulation using a new steering drawbar system Testing an 8 car experimental electric unit with all corners in KSC.. Success! 6m/s yard speed in the depot, over 12000 units of fuel loaded EDIT: I'll give a closeup of the wheels and drawbar system tomorrow night its using the chassis part of the puma rover, coupled with a free spinning docking washer from infernal robotics I think it is (?) using slightly modified M1 wheels tuned to not bounce at all (all suspension off) realistic wear and endurence.. with around 3x the power they used to have.. works well.. everything has a start..id love to see it translate to trucks too

Is it true that most KSP players never go interplanetary?
Overland replied to KerikBalm's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Definately never been there KSC2, Its the destination of my elcano challenge, thus the only viable line of my KTP circumnavigate kerbin via land with the occasional marine booster car being the extended goal over 12 months now Its a very long way and countless kerbals..trains both unnumbered and registered have died horribly trying.. The intercity is in hopeful jest Sadly the 150km marker is the magical barrier of multiple failures..system crashes..train damage and difficulty thats plagued from 4408 to 4427 in the mainliner locos..and 4003 to 4016 in the long hood road shunters Everything from overheating generators on a steep hill exploding leaving a train powerless to stop its own runaway destruction (4409) To losing one too many wheels on rough terrain that was once smooth and easy going.. Its a long hard journey.. Theres thousands of kilometres to go.yet until I conquer kerbin.. At the very least until then..kerbin is thier home -
Is it true that most KSP players never go interplanetary?
Overland replied to KerikBalm's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Ive never been to the mun.. Except when it got in the way once Ive been onboard since 0.23 Intercity is my thing.. KSC to KSC2 Electric railcars, diesel electrics..jet powered hybrid locomotives and battery shunters Ive never been more than 150km outside of KSC Yet killed thousands and lost craft so dear to me they could have been called a family.. Personally descending deep into its self writing stories and history.. Its been the most complete gaming experience for me as a whole, driving with a steering wheel and throttle.. Its bested any driving simulator The sound of traction motors and detriot powered diesels.. Giving a feeling of presence that outways any plastic feeling train simulator Blending my interests in engineering..railbound trains.. Thier massive land based sisters of the snowfields in the cold war and exploration all into one game Never left kerbin on purpose.. Ill leave space to those who love it... A 72 Ton land train driving hands on 80km is more dangerous and demanding as atmospheric reentry.. And I treasure every minute of it.. 1.1 set me back.. But as trains once again take shape So does the long terrible route filled with so much death and loss The primary intercity line of KTP Inland line KSC to KSC2 Service soon to be resumed Space is the stuff I see when the sun goes down -
Eeloo is the frozen lifeless shell of what once was a great all consuming biomechanical living spaceship.. Imagine its delight when it found kerbin buzzing with life..green bugeyeed self propelled sushami..a world of happyness in harmony with its planet..peaceful..utopian And completely defenseless.. It came without warning..a beautiful yet disturbing sight A bright star in the nights sky, admired by many as a symbol of good luck..grew over many days..eventually bigger than the mun in the sky.. There it waited until sunrise.. Driven by its hunger, the monster eeloo stripped all but scattered remains of kerbalilian life..the people..thier machines..thier technology and the soul of thier world Survivors, as momentary as they were stood in shock..frozen.. Arms stretched out with a wide eyed stare..as the silent screams of millions of mute green people filled the land.. Only KSC was spared.. Much like a harvestor of fruit spares the tree for it to grow again.. Thus is the KSC, left as a green shoot for life to once grow again, Satisfied in its hunger, eeloo departed kerbins orbit..leaving a lifeless yet pure green planet...silent from its once buzzing life.. A sad memory of what once much more, A chance encounter with duna..a planet of cinnamon and all things nice ended the reign of terror that this spacefaring parasite enforced on the universe.. By taking the cinnamon challenge.. See duna has plenty of cinnamon but no water The rest is lost in the timeless emptyness of space.. All we know is..its frozen shrivelled remains was discovered thousands of years later.. With the sweet smell of cinnamon Dont waste your time nuking eeloo..its already dead

I was in this situation for a long time.. Scott manley, jacksepticeye.. Its pricey now yes but deservedly so.its come a long way When it was on sale I finally brought 2 copies.. Then everything ive learnt from scott and jack Was absolutely no use to me..once the trains grabbed hold! So in short...in the spirit of a steam meme Would pay 40 dollars on a space simulator to drive trains again!

You dont need a life.. You have kerbal space program, Which is just as happy to be - Kerbal Submarine Program Kerbal Land-Train Program Kerbal Mc Kerbalface - Ocean scientific & Exploration Program Kerbal Truck & Logistics simulator And many other things.. Thats just on kerbin The S in KSP denotes the idea that there is space indeed.. And a whole cosmic dance above in the nights sky But it just as much can be taken as Kerbal Simulator Program Where everything starts with a K or Kerbal You know..like the smurfs But unlike the smurfs in the way that.. In every episode... Thousands might die screaming, in any manner of craft Its a true fact. Many KSP players never even goto the mun

Finally got trains working again in KSP, this time with a bit of a twist (pun intended) no more docking port flex these new models track beautifully, based on a puma rover for the now just while I tweak things before taking the dive back into detriot powered diesel electric and proper trains using a free spinning docking port under the wheelsets that gets pulled into any direction as the locomotive from the leading cars fixed wheels.. much like a B double or triple truck or land train from a themepark that ive been studying at work stable at speed, tracks as true as an arrow once wheels were tweaked and modded for a bit more power but BACK IN BUSINESS!!

In a save of 1.04 ive got somewhere on a flash drive.. Its quite simply horrible . While 4429 is the pride of the fleet.. Her sistertrains lay scattered throughout the landscape Making hybrid fuel wagons with passenger pods was a very bad idea . Just as it would be in real life It was a way to quickly jump out and repair a wheel .then get back in and underway Like most ideas ... It only worked once or twice.. The rest of the time it was a meatgrinder In the many unclassed unregistered 40 class and 44s. Every derailment ment usually only the locomotive crew survived in the reenforced cab Anyone else in the train was subjected to the orangle glow of failure.. Where thier own death ashes were consumed to nothingness..thier last moments lost in the intense explosions and fireball that became the all too common unofficial anthem of the KTP

See...you see!! THIS is what happens to perfectly sane people when you take a perfectly working wheel system... Then replace it with 100 different sliders and settings..and 1000 more ways for them to explode And no way to make them like before..atleast not stock I built a train today from a puma rover.. It shook itself to bits on the runway doing the harlem shake... Why? Because the physics of the world changed and sane things no longer work Thus Everyones sadness..false hopes and derailed hype trains funneled into this guy..an avatar of displeasure.. A skin of evil looking for another tasha yarr.. In other news.. Trains are awesome Ive got no idea if wheels are his problem But they are mine and I didnt want to start a thread I had no idea the kind of personal impact that the Kerbal Train Program, with its culture..lore..sadness and hope, had in my life Until an update made it useless . Colour me sad
-
Thanks... Yeah.. Its been a tough road, waiting for things to settle down bug wise these days.. I miss my trains Sadly loading 4429 into 1.1 invokes explosions so violent due to wheel forces that ive actually had wheels escape kerbins atmosphere The old 1 ton modified M1 wheels simply dont like these wheel physics.. Im slowly trying to modify new ones but I find myself disheartened longing for the old wheels I both trusted and knew how to handle down to an artform Given that I cant takeoff the simplest logical designs from the runway.. I dearly hope this is just a terrible teething phase for KSP If not...I shall make landtrains based off baldwin centipedes (not fake) Looks 1.1 wheel compatable..

It was in the pre release thread about overcoming the new wheel physics issue of drifting parked vehicals.. And that they were struggling to find a fix until they simply applied one in the opposite direction to counter it Someone did wisely say itll come back to bite us.. Indeed it has... Needing unrealistic gear configurations..check Aircraft slowly pulling to one side and showing forces applied left for no good reason...check Even submarines with ungodly amounts of vertical stablisation rolling left with SAS off..and NO controller plugged in
