Another noob problem....
nhnifong replied to cs.mate's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Vectoring thrust is enabled by default. However, having too many vectoring engines can be a problem, especially with mechjeb. modded vectoring engines with too much range are also a problem too (novapunch). Wings on your payload can cause your rocket to flip, avoid that. when in doubt, add more struts. -
Dialog boxes not showing on MAC?
nhnifong replied to straag's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Could be a missing font. Anyone know what font is used in the dialog boxes? -
Which mods are you using? Do you have hack gravity turned on? This is very likely caused by a mod. Mods sometimes interact to cause bugs as well, but the usual result of too many mods is just an out-of-memory crash. If I had to guess I'd say it's one of the robotics mods. Just try uninstalling them one at a time (keep a backup of your save or your whole KSP folder if you want)

How low can I make an orbit around Kerbol?
nhnifong replied to 99TheCreator's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
It's about 5000 kilometers. I think you need about 30 km/s to get there, straight from kerbin, or around 25 km/s to slingshot down with Jool. -
Telemachus and setting up another display.
nhnifong replied to 7499275's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
The other monitor does not need to be connected to the machine you are playing KSP with. As long as you can open a web browser on a device with a screen, you can use it. It just has to be on the same subnet as you KSP machine. You would find out what your KSP machine's local IP address is, and visit http://192.168.???.???:8080 on your ipod or your tv or whatever you got. -
If any of the existing ships in your save are incompatible, it will ask you if you want to delete them the first time the save is loaded. If any of the ships or planes in your VAB or SPH folders are incompatible it will ask you when you first open those folders in-game (load dialogs) That said, there is no need to lose anything when upgrading. Just copy your entire KSP folder somewhere and keep it forever!

Apollo Saturn V Style
nhnifong replied to AlamoVampire's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Check the vectoring range on that 1st stage engine. It doesn't need to be higher than 0.5. Tiberion might have set it to 2.0 or something -
remember, orbit lower to catch up, orbit higher to wait around.

I would just edit the CFG file for the mapsat part. Remove or comment out the module that actually loads the mapsat code. This will make all the mapsat parts non-functional, essentially turning them into decorative dead weight. And you can easily change it back if mapsat is ever fixed.

I'm trying to use to AEIS models for the Beamed Microwave power and I think it has messed up the animation and/or readouts. I see 0.000 KW on both the receiver and the transmitters and the activate button works but it never changes state to "deactivate". (but it does after re-loading the vessel) The context menu shows an efficiency readout, but no power is transmitted. Do you think I just need to get name of the anim right or if your code hard-bound to the stock models? EDIT: what if the model I want to use does not have an animation? EDIT 2: Woohoo I got it working. Just had to correct the anim names and stick to parts with animations. Also all the existing sats in my save had to be turned off and on. Now I have a nice selection of collapsible antennae for my sats!

Thanks Lajoswinkler! But where is the extra energy of the green light going when it turns into orange light? Are more orange photons emitted? It seems like this would leave atoms in an excited state because they have absorbed quanta of of 2.4 eV and re-emitted only about 2.03 eV. Or does it mean the surface is also emitting 0.27 eV mid-infrared photons and I just can't see them...

An engineer and his 8 year old daughter are stopped at an intersection in a Prius. When the light turns green, the man pushes the pedal but the car doesn't move. He furrows his brow and thinks about what to do. The turns on the hazard light and get out of the car. He walks around and looks at the tires as the traffic goes around him. He opens the hood and looks for the cable the must control the throttle but realizes of course the hybrid car doesn't have one. frustrated, he get's back in the car and prepares to push it to the side of the road when his daughter reaches over and pushes the off/on button twice and the car reboots and starts working again!

I have a green laser. When I point it at most things, I see a green light reflected no matter what color the surface. Except when I point it at orange traffic cones, it reflects what appears to be monochromatic orange light. Why do normal surfaces reflect light back in the frequency it came in? Why do some surfaces reflect light back in some preferred frequency?

Is the gap in the middle for the payload or another rocomax 64 fuel tank? How about a nerva-powered spaceplane?

General Science and Off-Topic Questions That I Ponder
nhnifong replied to NASI Director's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Typically it works better to search for answers than to search for questions. For example: query: How can I find the volume of a sphere result: wordy response form about.com, other junk query: "the volume of a sphere is" result: first two results actually have the formula in the excerpt. no need to even click. query: Why does Germany have such a bad reputation result: Crap from yahoo answers, people guessing. query: "Germany's reputation has been" result: Current or past events from european news sources that are actually informative -

Would we colonize a planet already inhabited?
nhnifong replied to Deadpangod3's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I think that would be the hard way of doing it. Terraforming could take thousands of years, but human habitat design can be adapted to the local climate immediately. Look at what we do here, when we go live in antarctica, we don't terraform it, we just build a well-insulated base with a reliable power supply and create a reasonable environment inside it. Whether we decide to inhabit the surface of an exoplanet, assuming we get a generation ship in orbit around the place, depends on how easy it is to build habitats there, vs just taking the water and minerals from the surface and expanding our ship in orbit.
