  1. So far, we've only returned samples from the Moon, one comet, and some interplanetary dust. (sorry hayabusa) If we were to launch a sample return mission to any body in the solar system, what would would want to see most? I think a multi-material sample from Titan would be the most interesting. To get a little of it's upper atmosphere, some of it's lower atmosphere, a little mud, a few pebbles, and some of that liquid methane that forms lakes on the surface. All that could be done with a landable glider holding a robotic arm and a pegasus-style rocket underneath with chambers designed for each kind of sample.
  2. I guess I'll just have to keep dreaming. Speaking of dreaming, I'll bet there will be some kind of immersive neurological interface before space becomes cheap. Dreams will become an even bigger industry than movies or games. The infinite universe of imaginary landscapes only limited by our collective imagination is the true final frontier. All the best things in the Universe (that we know of) are man-made.
  3. Anyone know how they plan to use the post-science-orbit decay period? After they propellant gets critically low, they're going to lower the orbit more and more until they crash it into the Moon. Will this give them any kind of special opportunities to observe the Lunar exosphere?
  4. There's an eccentric polar orbit around Minmus that flies over one of the ice lakes at 500m and just skim's the edge of the mountains that border it.
  5. No need to go all the way to the bottom. I'm just attempting 30 km or so because it takes an excessively large ship.
  6. Inspired by metaphor's awesome post on reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/KerbalSpaceProgram/comments/1lq8do/mission_to_jools_surface_and_back/) Let's have a competition to see how deep you dare to go into Jool's atmosphere with stock parts only. You must collect a "sample" (use your imagination) and bring it back to KSC for analysis. Use any of the scientific instruments as your dummy sample collection payload. And I'm off to go design my ship!
  7. Thanks JDP for this: It's a must have for orbital construction
  8. Since KSP's entire aerodynamic model might as well be considered a bug, I'm frequently using quicksave to work around "bugs". (when I'm not using FAR)
  9. Is there a fix for max time warp? It always seems to be disabled when I use TAC life support?
  10. http://www.twitch.tv/nhnifong Come hang out as I go to Eeloo to test the report that one can achieve a 2993.3 meter orbit around it's equator and all kinds of other antics 6:48 PM PST. Signing off. thanks for watching!
  11. Would anyone else like to circumnavigate Duna while also visiting all the easter eggs?
  12. This does not alleviate the problem, It only diguises it. Next time you try to move the craft it's attitude will be locked. Only reloading fixes it.
  13. Ooo, that is very cool! Thanks saik0! I think I'll make it my next mission to achieve the 2933.39 meter orbit around Eeloo
  14. Thanks for the history. I vaguely remember some of those pictures. thank goodness they were hosted on imgur, so they're still around. Novapunch has become a legacy.
  15. I'd like to share my attempt I did it mostly according to the rules, but also with a lot of twists. very cool challenge!
  16. I think there is an interesting measure of skill that comes down to how much spare fuel you like to give your craft. If you consistently design missions that have only a half percent of the stage's total fuel remaining after key maneuvers, that's a sure sign of skill. Personally, I could put a kerbal on the surface of duna with 0 fuel remaining. but my eve ascender is ridiculously overbuilt, because I don't do that as often.
  17. Seems that speed is really the variable that determines when you can start your turn.
  18. I decided to suck all the snacks out of it and take them over to the other base, storing them in whatever I could find. I took all the waste and dumped it in this thing.
  19. The bumpy parts are big enough that it doesn't have the torque to roll.
  20. I have a base here. It has the life support supplies for Bill's 22 day stay on Eve. But it's 10 km from the rest of the junk and he doesn't want to drive to work every morning. However, his house does not have wheels. It does however have a parachute, a winch, and a socket. I have at my disposal: One kethane plane, with 1 winch and one socket. One unmanned cart with a socket. One manned cart with a winch and a socket. One one-man ascent vehicle believed to be incapable of reaching orbit. (2 sockets) One two-man ascent vehicle believed to be capable of reaching orbit. (3 winches, 3 sockets) Several years of life support supplies and fuel in orbit. There is not enough life support on the surface for bill and Jeb to hang around long enough for another eve window. I've tried connecting it to the plane and taking off, no go. It explodes, even with unbreakable joints turned on.
  21. Monolith (Space Odyssey) Since then, NASA has installed commercial plastic owl decoys and inflatable owl balloons which had to be removed prior to launch.
