Made an attempt to come back to KSP. A few things I observed: - Many of the mods I liked are no longer supported. Major bummer, but I can't expect modders to stay interested forever. - Aerodynamics seem to have changed yet again, rendering previously working designs useless. I think I'm gonna let the devs cook it a little longer... honestly it feels more like a Beta now than it did in 0.90 (in my opinion)... Just wish for once the game I bought would stay the game I wanted.

Top Gun AI - The Official Tournament Thread
Slam_Jones replied to RocketTurtle's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Wow, that's a very old quote there. What I meant was that it was hard for the AI to dodge them all. Even in a manueverable craft, it seemed like I was getting shot down 2 out of every 3 times.. simply because they would spread out a bit and cover a larger area. But this was several months ago so my memory may not be 100% correct, and I'm fairly certain the AI has been tweaked since then. -
Old Mercedes coupes are simply gorgeous. My grandfather bought one way back in the day, and though I never got to drive it, I got to sit in it, and it is nice. It wasn't around long enough for me to remember exactly which model and year, but it was between '50 - late '60, but it looked like the one below, but white and topless. So probably a different model, but very similar body. Also I don't think his had the gull-wings, so it was likely a different car entirely... I don't know anymore. Also one of the most beautiful car designs ever, in my opinion.

Why do KSPers dislike shipping (as in the love version)?

Why do KSPers dislike shipping (as in the love version)?
Slam_Jones replied to fredinno's topic in KSP Fan Works
Had to look up what "shipping" meant in this context. So very disappointed in humanity. -
So the is 280x both better and cheaper than the 380? Why not choose it for the cheaper build as well? Also, what criteria makes it better? Just for future knowledge sake.

Well the game in question is Empyrion: Galactic Survival, which is still in Pre-Alpha, so what exactly is required is likely to change as progress progresses, however as far as I've heard, it's pretty easy on the server so far. I'd keep it up for other games, probably, but I just don't know which ones I'd be most interested in hosting yet. Plus, I need way better internet anyway. So for the meantime, it's mostly a though experiment, but it should help prepare me for when I do pull the trigger on it.

Interesting, because I've never, ever had a bad experience with ATI or AMD in general. No issues of driver stability, ever. If AMD really is the "bad" choice, then Intel must literally never have issues, as that'd be the only way it'd be more stable than AMD (in my experience of running an entirely AMD system for 5 years). Sure, Intel has much, MUCH higher top end (AMD CPUs top out at the FX-9590, a ridiculous CPU that takes 220W and is equivalent to an i5, while Intel has $1,000+ CPUs available that are both faster and use half as much wattage) but I honestly can't understand all the criticism of AMD. Always be wary of someone who dismisses an entire brand in two sentences.

Hello again, I'm thinking about (eventually) building and setting up a dedicated server PC, able to host multiplayer games for various... games. My question is, is there specific hardware that I should be looking at for this? Which components are the most vital? I assume the big ones are Internet Speed (both upload and download), RAM, and CPU. I also assume that RAM should be at a high clock speed (1866 is the top for DDR3, right? Also thinking about DDR4, as by the time I have the money to do this, it'll likely be the standard). What about CPU? Are there specific lines of CPUs built specifically for servers? If not, which ones would be most appropriate, and are there any specifics I should look for (like, should I be more interested in single-thread speed, or hyper-thread speed, or something along those lines?) Any help would be appreciated! Edit: While I'm at it, does anyone know a good site to rent such a server from for a reasonable price? The intention would be simply to host a dedicated server for a particular game.

A PC with an AMD CPU and an nVidia (Intel) GPU will work perfectly fine, and vice versa. So yes, your 7870 will work just fine with an Intel CPU/motherboard.
Ok, thanks for that info, I have a followup on the CPU choices, you mentioned there the Intel I5 4690K I looked that up and I cannot see how you have deemed the performance of that chip in comparison to others. I5 4690K, (Haswell) 4 cores 3.5GHz clock and 6mb cache £180 AMD FX-6350, 6 cores 3.9GHz clock and 8mb cache, £98 ... these are the main advertised specifications so I'm guessing (possibly wrongly) they are the indicators of performance. Can you explain to me why the AMD has bigger numbers, is 2/3 (nearer 1/2 actually) the price and yet you rate it lower than the Intel?
From my own research, the i5 should be faster and generally consume less power than the AMD. Personally, I run AMD and have never had an issue. However, if you play KSP mainly, you really should go for Intel, as it far exceeds AMDs single-core capabilities.

Nostalgia: Your Fondly Remembered Rocket Designs
Slam_Jones replied to Vermil's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Ah, my first true "go-anywhere" ship. I think I named it the Hawkeye Cruiser... built about 5 of em (each with different colored lights) and sent them across the solar system. Good times. I think this was in 0.90 or earlier.
I would. Crucial has an excellent name and builds the SSD's with the best features. Their MX series has power protection and MLC memory, both the more desirable options. I think some drives even act like SLC the first half of their capacity.
Good to know. I wouldn't want my OS to suddenly disappear due to power issues... speaking of, how common are such issues? Does the memory get wiped during power surges, or things like that? My current residence has... lets say less-than-professional wiring (though far from dangerous). The MX series would set me back a bit more, so would it be worth the extra cash? I'd likely only be putting the OS and maybe a game or two on it: nothing that can't be recovered.

Good morning, fellow Kerbonauts! I'm looking into getting an SSD for my PC. Currently I'm not too concerned with size... I mainly want to fit Windows 10 onto there and see how much smoother and quicker it loads before investing further money. Now the SSD that I've had my eye on is the Samsung EVO 850 (250GB), which would currently set me back about $90. I've heard from other places that the Samsung are among the best SSDs. Is this still true? I have an offer from Newegg for a different SSD, an Intel 535 Series (120GB) for $40 after promo code and whatnot. So I guess my question is, for lower-volume SSDs (250GB and below) is there any particular manufacturer I should look into? Or should I just spring for the cheapest (assuming it's from a company I've at least head of)?

After looking at that Athlon, it turns out it is a different socket type, ergo would require a new Mobo. My buddy ended up ordering the A10, which I installed for him yesterday. Despite being in a mini case (I felt like I was performing surgery on a midget, especially being just after installing all my components in the Termaltake Level 10 case) it was actually the easiest CPU change-out I've ever done. Both the CPU and Heat Sink were very cooperative, and the PC only required one restart to get going. He can now run WoW on Ultra (although he could do that with the A4), and can run Titanfall and BattleField 4 without hiccup, and both look beautiful. Looking forward to getting Battlefront. Should look great

(Sorry, have to show off somewhere ) I have terrible money management skills and just bought this case: Really wanted the Limited Edition one (because it makes this case look like brick) but it was $1,100, which is a bit beyond my budget Should be getting delivered tomorrow. Can't wait! ----- Anyway, to stay on topic, my friend is upgrading his A4-6300 quite soon, and I've made some suggestions, but am curious what others think. Currently, to switch to an FX-series CPU, he'd need to get a new Mobo, so for the meantime I recommended the A10-5800K plus a GTX 750 Ti. (The GTX is already ordered, should be arriving same time as my case) Would it generally be a better idea to switch it up to an FX-series, or upgrade to the A10? Going the route of the A10 means he won't have to replace the Mobo right off the bat (ergo cheaper in the short run, but more expensive next time upgrade-time rolls around), but going the route of the FX-series likely means more power and smoother gameplay, but a bigger investment off the bat (it would require a new Mobo, CPU, and PSU). Sadly he doesn't have the budget to go Intel, otherwise it'd be an easy choice So, should he stick with the A-series, or would it be a better use of resources to go straight to FX-series?

Adding more money at the start
Slam_Jones replied to Sobriquet's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Hm. Make sure you're modifying the correct values (I usually open the .cfgs in Notepad, and do a search for "Funds" and other similar words), and make sure you're at the main menu in KSP (or even have KSP closed) when you do it. Trying to modify the cfg while that save is open can lead to unpredictability (and your modifications not being saved, usually). I remember that filling out the tech tree via the debug menu was a hassle... it's probably easiest to edit in the proper funds/science, and unlock the nodes by hand. -

You can use the debug menu (alt+F12) to auto-complete any missions you may have accepted, and gain the rewards instantly. Just need to find the right tab. -
What is your favorite stock engine?
Slam_Jones replied to Mad Rocket Scientist's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Probably the Rhino (single-nozzle 3.75m engine). Looks great, plenty of power, awesome ISP. Easy to make chemical SSTOs with -
AFAIK, Intel tends to provide much better performance than AMD for KSP, due to single-thread speed or something (I'm not exactly an expert) I use AMD too, tho, so don't feel too bad

Two things are certain of PB666 posts in the Science Labs: 1. The first line is a link. 2. There is little to no other info given. (And if there is, it's not often relevant)
