I've got a few ideas on how to get around that little hurdle Also: Part 2 has been posted! Landin journeys through the desert, and Jeb learns to land without crashing! -
The Elcano Challenge : Ground-based circumnavigation
Slam_Jones replied to Fengist's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Well, I've taken your advice and created a thread for my challenge attempt. I'll be updating both my post on here and the thread as needed. It's actually quite stable, given the right input. It's got enough SAS to keep it flat thru corners, even at full speed. The only problem comes when I catch too much air off a dune and crash :\ -
Route Traveled (Please note that actual literal path will vary slightly from path shown here) (Also, credit to some unknown Redditors who put this map together so I could draw all over it) White arrows = Journey segments Brown arrows = Re-Fuel stops Direct Link to Map Hello! I've recently entered the Elcano Challenge, which involves circumnavigating a body by land and sea (if applicable) only. I chose to enter this challenge on Kerbin and will be using a vehicle I designed for the race. My plan is to head westward from KSC, and stick as close as possible to the equator. While this vehicle is amphibious, it uses significantly more fuel on water than land, so I will be choosing routes with the least amount of water as possible. It runs off of Liquid Fuel, and when it runs out, I send a jet to re-fuel it. I've decided that my quicksave/quickload rules are thus: - Come to a full stop and quicksave every 20 minutes, or - Quicksave after repairing a tire. - If the vehicle is too damaged to continue, revert to last quicksave. I'll be updating this thread as I go along. The Elcano Challenge : Ground-based circumnavigation
Slam_Jones replied to Fengist's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Part One of my journey has been completed! I've uploaded the pics and posted them in my post on Page 3, including a "storyline" of sorts. BTW, the album's aren't showing up (on my browser at least) correctly inside the spoiler, so let me know if they do/do not work for everyone else. If they're totally screwed up, I'll post em in another format. -
The Elcano Challenge : Ground-based circumnavigation
Slam_Jones replied to Fengist's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Well, to answer your questions: I will be circumnavigating Kerbin, going westward from KSC, and I will driving solely using Jet power. The electric wheels will be in Neutral, as it were, except on steep hills as needed. Once out of fuel, I'll send out a jet to land nearby and refuel it using KAS. As for quicksaves, I do them every 20 minutes, and only when I'm completely stopped. Water is smooth enough I don't need to save on it, as unless I mess up, it's all good. And my rule on quicksave is only every 20 minutes, or when I repair a wheel. If I break more than a repairable wheel, I go back to the last quicksave. -

The Elcano Challenge : Ground-based circumnavigation
Slam_Jones replied to Fengist's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
To each their own! Personally I'm looking forward to this challenge because I recently set up my rovers with new buttons to make it easier (and more fun!) to drive using an auxiliary input (racing wheel in this case). Plus lately I've been kinda bored with the standard Kerbal "design, launch, redesign, re-launch, etc. etc." method, so this changes it up a bit. It's more about making something that will last the whole way, really. -
A pick-up is a very small medkit. It was the first Alcubierre-Drive vegetable to be a refridgerator. Its shape is alarmingly potato-shaped and, again with its smell, it took a long stick to recover since half the time it was not where Kerbals expected to find a foodstuff. Due to its nature of frequenting the potato parts of forums. This tragic potato was incorrectly labeled as not to be trusted by the smart blenders.

The Elcano Challenge : Ground-based circumnavigation
Slam_Jones replied to Fengist's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
About refuelling, is there any specific way you recommend? I was either gonna send out a small/medium sized plane to re-fuel the car wherever it runs out, or My other idea was to drop some pre-placed fuel depots along the route before I head out. Are these both acceptable? -

The Elcano Challenge : Ground-based circumnavigation
Slam_Jones replied to Fengist's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Hm, I recently built a new rover that I rather like (able to travel over rough terrain at 40-50m/s safely), so I might give this a try. Will definitely require some re-fuels, and I'll have to mod it a bit for the water, but otherwise this looks like a fun challenge! -

Transition from VTOL to horizontal flight
Slam_Jones replied to gilflo's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
The single best technique I've personally found (which will only work if you use mods) is to take a hinge from Infernal Robotics, stick it on the bottom of the craft in line with the CoM, so that it can swing toward the nose or tail. Attach an engine of your choice to the hinge, and clip into the fuselage as needed. Now, you can set the IR controls to something simple (I usually do '3' and '4') so that you can aim the VTOL. Aim it ahead of you slightly, you'll start losing horizontal speed (while holding vertical speed). Aim it behind you, and you'll start gaining horizontal speed (while holding vertical speed). If you also have an engine on the back, then you can make smooth transitions from on to the other. Just keep in mind the spool-up time if using Jet engines. First image show VTOL in "flat state". The VTOL is pointed straight down, and the craft moves straight up. Second image, the VTOL is tilted back. This gives the vessel forward thrust in addition to VTOL'yness. -- At this point, you can activate the main engine, then shut down the VTOL once you're moving quick enough. Third image, the VTOL is tilted forward. This allows the pilot to burn horizontal speed without losing vertical speed. -- Here, you would throttle down gently to set her down how you want it. Alternately, you can use this to stop mid-air, then get going again without landing. And lastly, one of my VTOLs that uses this technique. You can see the VTOL in the "flat" position on the bottom of it there. -
Wow. I literally never would have thought of that. Oh well.

What we've seen here today, folks, is how to kill a forum game. Rather sad, huh?

totm june 2018 Work-in-Progress [WIP] Design Thread
Slam_Jones replied to GusTurbo's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Stuck a new "arm" on my station today, to help guide and attach approaching modules. Similar to the Canadarm, but with a fork at the middle joint, and launchable grappling hooks at the end. It can also "walk" across the station to wherever it's needed next, using the hooks and the claw. Mods: KAS, IR, Kolonization This is part of my all-SSTO program. -
Continued on my all-SSTO space program. Today I switched out a badly-made arm for a more effective one. It should now be able to grab approaching modules and stick em where they need to go, then "walk" across the station to wherever it's needed next.

Should Jet engines be rebalanced?
Slam_Jones replied to quasarrgames's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
The single biggest issue to me in the asymmetric flame-out. Assuming that's fixed in 1.0 (I believe they said it will be), then I could care less what they do with it, since it will be soooo much easier to manage multiple engines. -
