KSP Interstellar Extended Continued Development Thread
kerbiloid replied to FreeThinker's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
As there are XenonGas, Fluorine and ISRU Refinery, maybe this is applicable in KSPI too? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenon_tetrafluoride https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenon_hexafluoride https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071225220059AA7Og2X Density 4 t/m3, solid, melting at 350-400 K. Of course, too expensive to have a practical application in real world. -
Magnetic Space Parts

Electromagnetic floor doesn't require powered tether and iron as well. Iron boots, proximity sensors, segmented electromagnetic floor with steps highlight. And disco light ball. -
Re-Orbiting Asteriods to make a bigger Moon.

Total mass of the Solar asteroid belt is 4% of Moon mass. -
If we got a radio signal from an extraterrestrial radio signal, this would mean that they have revealed those location, while we - haven't revealed ours. If they were a Mighty Interstellar Civilization , they wouldn't send such signals around. Because Mighty Interstellar Civilization has star cruisers and hypersensitive radio-telescopes which would detect our TV programs source location without SETI signals or other fantasy years ago. So, if we receive an alien SETI radiosignal that would mean: there is a immature naive civilization with more or less high technologies, it can be agressive. And while we know about them, they still don't know about us. (Because if they know about us, they wouldn't send a broadcast signal, they would call personally us, the Earthlings). In such case humans will put all efforts to build Interstellar Defence Forces and suddenly visit those aliens in their cradle - to establish a Good Neighbourhood before they catch it first.

Good names for Urlum (Outer Planet Mod Uranus Analog) Probe
kerbiloid replied to davidy12's topic in KSP1 Discussion
"Uro-Logical Probe" - because it's for Urlum and very logical and clever device. And a "Honor" series probe for a Rhea satellite - "Honor-Rhea", i.e. "in honor of Rhea". -

A robot designed to explore asteroid/comets surface
kerbiloid replied to RainDreamer's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Inspired by Weighted Companion Cube. Hearts are required on every face for proper usage. -
Kerbal Attachment System contains a harpoon. If this works in KSP, why it shouldn't in real world?

I've checked at home. I use the Turbonisu Reloaded parts (compatible with 1.0). http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/102041-1-0-TurboNisuReloaded-Stock-a-Like-Parts-Pack-06-05-15

Near Future Construction contains a conical gird part(s) which you can combine with tanks to get what you want. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/52042-1-04-Near-Future-Technologies-%28fully-operational-in-1-04%29 Tantares LV contains a "skeletal" upper stage for Proton (née Block-DM). http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/81537-1-0-4-Tantares-Stockalike-Soyuz-and-MIR-29-1-13-08-2015-Antares!/page315 Turbonisu's Stockalike parts has one. (Mod is outdated, "node_stack_bottom" would contain -1.0 as the fifth value.) http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/69539-0-23-Stockalike-parts-for-useful-esthetics

What do you think about Universe Sandbox does is worh buying
kerbiloid replied to Pawelk198604's topic in The Lounge
Great software. Allows to play with orbits, physical params, constants. For example to add a massive companion for the Sun and watch how this effects orbits. Or a fly-through of a massive star. Enjoyed it very much. A little unstable. Often crashes. At my side did not want to run offline (only with online Steam) - in contrast to KSP, Skyrim and Fallout, which are also steam, but run offline perfectly. -
Bahamuto Dynamics Shielded port. Allows to attach things below the heatshield and close it when those things are no longer required. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/49035-WIP-Bahamuto-Dynamics-%28Dockable-Fairings%29-11-5-13 All parts require a little modification: node_stack_bottom = 0.0, -0.1250235, 0.0, 0.0, -1.0, 0.0, 1 I.e. as usual, fifth value in "node_stack_bottom" line must be negative.

And then catch it: 30..50 km/s speed. Somewhere near Yucatan we have a nice sample of such ... err... aerobreaking. Also do not forget: nothing is 100% perfect. So, waste heat make a nice cloud of comppressed steam from the icy rock. Which means that you have an asteroid power plant producing interplanetary amounts of energy. Energetic balance is poor again. An unexpected joy: such power plant would be the first extraterrestrial seaship because it will melt tonnes of ice around it with waste heat. Delta of energy does not depend ion/chemical/nuke/magic. Anyway you need (V2^2-GM/R2)-(V1^2-GM/R1). If you mean "very slow travel". Are you ready to have a 9-year trip with Rosette? If you want a fast journey, you need tens-hundreds km/s. And all near-Earth atmo- and gravi- loss is just abou 2 km/s - nothing to look at.

Propellant depot based Mars architecture.
kerbiloid replied to Exoscientist's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Why zero boiloff? Boiling point -200..250° C, equlibrium temperature for Venus..Mars orbits -100..+50°C. Would boil off and how! -
Yes, can. And now calculate delta-Energy to deliver the ice from an asteroid (icy ones are of course far from Sun, not next to Earth) - or compare an energy to deliver, say, 1 t of methane from Titane with heat energy which this 1 t of methane gives when being burnt. And you get a sad result: it's energetically simpler to deliver the fuel from Earth and to make methane from CO2 and H2O on Earth than to deliver it from Titan.

Most of those double/triple stars of course belong to galactic arms or bulge, I presume. Just because most of stars do. While the Sun stands between arms, far from bulge, So, those "most stars" rub one against another much more often than Sun does. Of course, they interact much more intensively. While the Sun is so lonely, so forgotten... Far from the madding crowd.

If you have a ~1000 t orbital shipyard, you can build there a ~1000 t space cruiser. If you have a ~1000 t cruiser on orbit, you must supply it with ~10000 t of fuel (maybe per flight, maybe per year, maybe per several years - doesn't matter). To put on orbit ~10000 t of fuel you must launch ~200 000 t of rockets which means 100 SaturnV per ship just to deliver the fuel. Simple nukes do not solve the problem as their ISP is just 2..3 times more than chemicals have. So, you need an Earth-orbit tanker with ISP ~10000...100000 s to stay in healthy boundaries. And if you have ISP 100000, why do you need all that orbital stuff at all? You just sit into your "Thunderbird 2"-style ship on the backyard and fly to Pluto. So, no orbital shipyards, would never appear at all.

Stanford Torus mod looks like what you describe. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/84106-0-90-Stanford-Torus-0-6 As you can see, it consists of just several complicated parts, so part count is very low, which allows FPS to be more or less appropriate. A funny problem with it. As any craft gets loaded only when it is inside the physical range from you (usually, ~2 km), this huge torus appears at lightning speed right before your face when you approach to it. Another sample of super-structure is Katlantis Hotel from an old movie. Also with low part count as I can see. Wayland has several beautiful samples. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/24677-%280-23%29-Wayland-Corp-Development-and-released-download-Thread-%28new-parts%29 So, maybe if you use Ubiozur Welding Continued mod to pack many parts together, the Kraken will be indulgent to you. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/107273-0-90-UbioZur-Welding-Ltd-Continued-2-1-1-%282015-01-14%29?p=2113214&viewfull=1#post2113214 Of course, TweakScale can be useful to increase your creation.
