Can you indicate how much of a problem lightning is for fighter planes? My best guess would be it is negligible to non-existent, if you look at actual numbers. Glass cockpits and fly-by-wire craft have drawbacks, but major benefits too.
Wel, lightning striking any aircraft is a bad thing, since metal conducts electricity. But the F-35, along with the F-23, relies on electronics more than any planes before it. Before, aircraft used manual control tubes and analog gauges, so if they got struck by lightning, the biggest thing they would have to worry about would probably be a fire being started (many aircraft have built in for extinguishers anyway). The F-35, on the other hand, will lose all of its instruments if it gets hit, and you can't fly a plane without instruments. In addition, it uses fly-by-wire instead of hydraulic controls, so lightning would kill that too, so you wouldn't be able to fly it at all, really.

Stock Military Aircraft! New F-105 & Dassault Mirage
pTrevTrevs replied to Zak423's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Wow, very nice renditions of very nice aircraft! Have some rep, you've earned it! -
Does the lighting take out the computers or something like that because that sounds horrible.
Well, I imagine it would fry the computers, and since the F-35 relies on electronics so much, one well placed lightning strike (or EMP) would render the instruments useless, and the fly-by-wire probably messed up too. The A-10 and F-15 still use analog instruments, and therefore are not affected by lightning as much. Funny, the F-35 is named the lightning...

Ah yes, The Pentagon Wars... Pretty good movie.

The F-35, if it's bought, will replace the A-10, which is something it shouldn't do. Because it's a stealth aircraft, it needs to carry its weapons internally, which seriously limits its capability to provide Close Air Support (CAS). The A-10, on the other hand, it perfectly suited for CAS with its 37mm cannon and high payload capacity, as well as its reputation for being able to take a lot of damage. The F-35, on the other hand, can be completely and utterly ruined if lightning strikes nearby (according to my cousin, who is an Air Force mechanic). It's stealth ability is inadequate as well, I remember hearing about a radar that can detect the F-35. So basically, it's a fragile, detectable aircraft that underperforms in its intended role, so no, we should not buy it. The A-10 is tougher, cheaper, and more capable.

Granted, I become Sauron, Lord of the Ring, The Nameless Enemy, the Lord of Barad-Dur, consumer of all things good! The only difference is that I don't plan to invest all my power in some stupid ring that could be easily stolen. I wish I could start a company which produces exact replicas of vintage piston engine aircraft, such as the Bf-109 and P-51.

There is an Egyptian pyramid that is even larger than the Great Pyramid of Giza, but the US Government smuggled it out of Egypt in the 1950s to scare the Soviet Union. It is believed to have been hidden under Mount Rushmore. It is possible that the USSR's missile program was begun in an attempt to destroy this super pyramid, but the Soviet government could never find a good enough reason to launch a missile, especially after the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, so today it remains hidden under one of our greatest monuments. 100% true, I promise.

Looks nice! Can't wait to see the planes you make for it! Do you have plans for a catapult to launch aircraft or to just launch them unaided?

Granted, but there was a paperwork mixup and you end up with 1/3 of a wish instead I wish I knew what to build in KSP next

11/20/2015 Space Craft Friday - The Very Late Edition

You should have edited the SCF logo to have the word "Friday" crossed out and replaced with "Monday", but other than that, it's a good selection. -
War Thunder - Screenshots and Discussion thread!
pTrevTrevs replied to Columbia's topic in The Lounge
Is it just me, or do I post here more often than anyone else? Whatever, here's a summary of my War Thunder experience today. Got the F6F I also tried the Battle of Guam dynamic campaign. Apparently the thing that lets you clip through other planes when close enough to the ground doesn't work here, I immediately crashed. -
Cool! Looks sort of like a WWI bomber!

Granted, but because you didn't wish for anything, your wish has gained you nothing. Your friends and family ridicule you for making such a foolish wish I wish there were more submarine movies

Granted, your computer grows legs that allow it to compete with Usain Bolt, but performance-wise, it still runs slow as hell. I wish I didn't have to get up so early every morning

The last time we got an amount of snow in that was worth anything was in 2009. It doesn't snow very much down in south Alabama, but it does get pretty cold. Of course, 20 degrees Fahrenheit may seem cold to me, but is probably summer weather for Canadians. Alabama's climate is known for its hellish summers.

3 things I've done that the next user hasn't
pTrevTrevs replied to DarkGravity's topic in Forum Games!
I have played an instrument onstage, but not a flute. 1)I have flown an airplane 2)I have been aboard a WWII battleship (and submarine) 3)I have seen a real Saturn V rocket and Apollo Command Module -

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present the Beaufort, the finest example of British engineering. This thing can take a beating, I feel lied to by the guy who told me British bombers sucked! I survived both of these situations -

I got the D-3 the other day as well. Besides the extra machine gun in the turret, funky cockpit canopy, and unfortunate lack of sirens, I can't really tell a difference. The extra MG doesn't even have that much effect in combat, the rear turret still sucks. -
Granted, but you get so much snow that all the buildings in your town are covered and the people inside are trapped. The entire surface of the earth is covered with snow, and oceans freeze over. You have caused the end of civilization through this one careless wish. I wish I owned my own airplane

Only 300 more to go and we'll be one step closer to a Lego Saturn V!
