  1. 14. A sled, to sled down Nilokeras Scopulus if it is smooth enough.
  2. There is a bug making noise in my basement. It's probably some kind of cricket or grasshopper that got in through the cracks.
  3. Preposterous! We would never waste our time visiting Earth!
  4. Tonight it is not quite cloudy enough to obscure all the sky, but too cloudy to get a proper look out into space. I will have to wait to see Vesta.
  5. "NASA" in this case means experts who are actively involved in robotic Mars exploration, and probably some of the people involved in creating tech for manned Mars missions.
  6. In this game, we will try to think of things you might need on a pioneering trip to Mars that would not be immediately apparent. Please include some description of what the item or skill would be useful for. Here are some examples: 1. Martian colonists might find it useful to learn sign language, as a backup for their spacesuit radio. 2. Since Mars receives a lot less sun energy than Earth, you probably wouldn't need to wear sun shades there very much. 3. A simple household broomstick would likely suffice for cleaning dust off solar panels. 4. It would be a good idea to have some way of maintaining and harvesting a colony of cockroaches to cook and eat, as they are hardy and nutritious.
  7. I am very excited about this. With NASA's amazing expertise in human habitation in space, and their R&D in all aspects of Martian lifestyle, humanity will soon be able to accrue all the minds and hands we need into one big team to put people on Mars. This is feeling a hundred times more real than I thought it would by this time.
  8. That wasn't a deterrent for the KSP community, it seems. @DAXIN, maybe this mod is of interest: also New Horizons is fastest, not Voyager 1.
  9. Nice! Earth is a little small there, but the asteroid looks great!
  10. Today I tried my hand at RSS with @Nightside's awesome "Transmogrifier" patch. I cobbled together a probe lander with the essentials, put some big rockets under it, and launched it, to see what it could do. I landed one on the Moon and one on Mars! https://imgur.com/a/VnCI0AT This is promising, as now I can start an RSS campaign without the load times requiring me to stand near a black hole for a few minutes each time.
  11. I was looking to install RSS, but the latest thread on the matter seems to be inaccessible. (image in spoiler) I would like to know if this is intentional on the part of the moderators, or if I can find the latest information about that mod somewhere else.
  12. Firing a rocket to accelerate something is like throwing a rock while on a skateboard. If you throw the rock, you will accelerate in the opposite direction. But if you move the rock as if you were to throw it, then pull it back towards you with your arms, your net change in velocity will be zero. In this scenario, Earth's atmosphere and gravity are like the force of your arm pulling the rock back after you throw it. In order for Earth to accelerate, the reaction mass from the nukes has to get out of the atmosphere and out of Earth's gravity well, just like the rock which has to leave your arms, or else the two will be pulled toward each other equally and Earth's net acceleration will be zero.
  13. If you could get the exhaust gases to escape Earth you could accelerate it slightly.
  14. 10/10 ONLY A HUMAN WOULD CREATE SUCH A MEANINGLESS MESSAGE. HUMANS ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS BEEN A GOOD DAY TO YOU TOO!
  15. They are. There was a picture many pages back of Suni Williams inside, wearing a SpaceX suit.
  16. I keep F9 close too when I'm playing ultra hard mode.
  17. Storm is apparently beginning to wane. http://www.planetary.org/explore/space-topics/space-missions/mer-updates/2018/08-mer-update-opportunity-sleeps.html
  18. Vesta is between Saturn and Jupiter as well, it should be visible from most locations with a small telescope.
