If you're enjoying sinking parts into your fuel tanks, you're doing it right. If you're enjoying having all parts distinct with no overlap, you're doing it right. If you're fretting about which way is "acceptable" and not enjoying how others choose to play, you're doing it wrong. Mass doesn't go away, you're given the choice to make your craft unique if you choose to do so, whether you choose depends on you. My advice is don't worry about it

One part and an on-screen mouse draggable UI. The hinge just needs to be universal and able to pitch, yaw and roll (rotate) so a ball joint would be plenty. The UI would just be the current rotation gizmo rendered in the flight scene, activate the part and drag the rotation rings to the desired place, the part would track to the new location, a bit like a solar panel tracking the sun. Symmetrically placed ball joints would move together. Each axis could be unlockable in the editor, allowing for floppy joints or rotating bearings, and initial position could be pre-set. Give it attachment nodes, make it surface attachable too. One part would do it but you can bet people would want different sizes, so one for each standard size and you're done

Issues with 0, and why it is dangerous.
sal_vager replied to Xannari Ferrows's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I agree, rather than produce anything useful this thread and the one before it is just turning to argument over method and accusations over ability. No one is more "right" simply by shouting louder and dismissing others. It seems that discussions of the value of zero have zero value here. -
The Linux Thread!
sal_vager replied to sal_vager's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
What am I looking at here, the glow around Kerbin? Sound would be a Pulseaudio issue, it's not detecting that you have rear ports, you may be able to edit Pulse's confs to fix it though. Those graphics features aren't working correctly for me either when just using the options in KSP/Unity, the only method that works for me is to force them either globally or per application in the Nvidia control panel. The what? -
Ok. How about a tiny spacesuit to protect insects in a vacuum?
sal_vager replied to Aethon's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I suspect that this kills the insect... Very interesting video, seeing insects that close really shows how different they are from us. -
Press F5 to quicksave, Mod+F5 (Alt/Rshift) for a save menu. Hold F9 to quickload, Mod+F9 for a load menu. Have fun

Impossible mission
sal_vager replied to annikk.exe's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
I can confirm, you can do these from orbit, as long as you're above the area -
Interesting question, refining may be along similar lines to existing NASA ideas for ISRU but how do you get material in a weightless environment into your converter in the first place? My first guess was for an excavator style system, with a double sided bucket to prevent material escaping, but how could the material be transferred from the bucket to the converter? On thinking about it more though, you could have something like an Archimedes screw that would both scoop up loose material and transfer it to your converter, as even in zero gravity the material would bump against the inside of the screw and be directed along it.

Hi Ethanadams and welcome to the KSP forums Unfortunately your challenge is not possible in the game and to save you from embarrassment, disappointment and admonishment by other members I have closed this thread. Please see the Challenge submission guide for help on challenges, and try again when you have a challenge that is possible within the limits of current generation PC hardware

Stock fairings: Procedural or not?
sal_vager replied to FishInferno's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Lol you're not getting it at all, there's lots of launchers and there are purpose built fairings for all of them, a customer has to design their payload to fit within the fairing options provided by the company they wish to use, if their payload is too large for the fairings of one rocket they have to either redesign their payload or go with another launcher. No one makes payload fairings to order on a per-customer bases, it just doesn't happen, it's prohibitively expensive in time, money and effort, new fairings are only considered to meet evolving market needs, not for individual customers. Knowing the above, it's clear that procedural fairings are not realistic when compared to real life rockets, procedural fairings would be a case of fairings being made to order on a per-customer basis. KSP is likely to go with procedural fairings for gameplay reasons, but to consider this realistic is deeply incorrect -
Stock fairings: Procedural or not?
sal_vager replied to FishInferno's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
There's something else about that new fairing as well, it's being proposed to allow the rocket to carry a pair of large satellites instead of one large and one small, so it's intended to meet a projected need in the future. It is not being proposed to allow for one customers payload, as that would be preposterously cost inefficient, so it still doesn't come anywhere close to proving that new fairings can just be made when needed. A lot of time, money and effort has to go into designing, testing and certifying any new space hardware, even payload fairings, it's not something that is taken lightly or done on a moments notice to satisfy the needs of a customer with an oversized payload. Current and future customers will still have to ensure their payload can fit within the offered fairing sizes, or they won't go to space today You can argue as much as you like Tuareg, it won't change things. -
Stock fairings: Procedural or not?
sal_vager replied to FishInferno's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
A new fairing that will take two years and over €100 million to bring to market, that is very, very far from an employee on a monthly wage making a new steel box A new larger fairing will be able to carry a larger payload, but if your satellite still exceeds the offered standard sizes then use a bigger rocket -
Do you feel KSP is ready for 1.0?

I don't know about you but my knees are knocking and my nerves are frayed, what could they say this week do you think? -
Stock fairings: Procedural or not?
sal_vager replied to FishInferno's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Thing is, if you make a new fairing you now have new hardware to test and certify, this is a lot of money and time, having a selection of ready made fairing sizes is a lot cheaper, and you sell capacity on your launch vehicle based on what it can carry. No one wants to foot the bill for design, testing and certification of new hardware for one customer who couldn't make their payload fit the fairings that the launch company offers, its not so difficult to design your satellite to a common size or to ensure it folds down properly Edit: Yeah, what Jouni said. -
Stock fairings: Procedural or not?
sal_vager replied to FishInferno's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Well, imagination is a wonderful thing, but if your payload won't fit it's not going to space As FishInferno says, if your payload is too big the rocket may not be able to manage it anyway, P-fairings allow for payloads wider than the rocket is tall, that's hardly realistic. But we know Squad doesn't like to restrict players game style so it'll be P-fairings, so this entire thread really doesn't serve much of a purpose -
Stock fairings: Procedural or not?
sal_vager replied to FishInferno's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
They still don't make them to order though, they have standard sizes, if your payload is too big, pay for a bigger rocket -
That would be Kerbal Burlesque Program and banned in Australia, but a deep sea exploration game would be awesome, develop and build submersibles, explore caverns, harvest from sulphur vents, research aquatic life, sounds like a good game

Stock fairings: Procedural or not?
sal_vager replied to FishInferno's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Hmm, on the subject of realism of fixed fairings, it seems that rocket payload fairings are indeed manufactured to a small number of standard sizes per vehicle, and not made to order. Either your payload fits or you use a bigger rocket Atlas V has 4 and 5 metre standard fairing sizes. RUAG Space makes a 5 metre fairing for the Ariane. SpaceX use a 13.1 by 5.2 metre fairing. And the Proton offers two lengths as standard, 13305 mm and 15255 mm. -

Poll stripped of credibility and meaning -
I'm pretty sure Felipe and the others don't want to go back to making event displays out of MDF, so they'll probably think of more games to make, and it'd be silly not to expand on the Kerbal brand. They could make anything... Kerbal Ace Program, flight simulator. Kerbal Bass Program, manage an alien rock band. Kerbal Case Program, crime scene investigation. Kerbal Dates Program, relationship simulator. Kerbal Estates Program, simcity on Kerbin. Kerbal Face Program, Kerbalizer II. Kerbal Grace Program, dancing sim. Kerbal Haste Program, sonic the hedgekerbal. Kerbal I-Program, program robots made from parts. Kerbal Juice Program, manage a soft drinks company. Kerbal Kerbal Program, needs no explanation. Kerbal Lace Program, run a fabric empire. Kerbal Mace Program, dungeon crawler. Kerbal Nice Program, scrupulously accurate and precise. Kerbal Orange Program, rhyming game. Kerbal Plaice Program, fishing simulator. Kerbal Quaff Program, tapper clone. Kerbal Race program, build and drive your own race cars. Kerbal Spays Program, veterinary sim. Kerbal Taste Program, cooking with Kerbals. Kerbal-U Program, education simulator. Kerbal Vase Program, pottery. Kerbal Waste Program, recycling sim. Kerbal X Program, mutant kerbals with super powers. Kerbal Yes Program, just agree it was a good idea. Kerbal Zoo Program, run an alien zoo.

Compact Stock Propeller Aircraft
sal_vager replied to Pourpaya's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
First I've seen of it, and I have to say, this is awesome, in fact all craft like this are Really well done Pourpaya, and so compact, all that's missing is a craft file.
