Kerbal EVA Six Degrees of Movement
sal_vager replied to Apollo13's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Did you know you can pitch by holding the mouse button and moving the mouse forwards and backwards, and you can yaw with left and right mouse movement. It doesn't work too well in the normal EVA mode, but if you set EVA_ROTATE_ON_MOVE to False, you'll have a lot more control -
The Linux compatibility thread!
sal_vager replied to sal_vager's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
Hi Haifi, you need to open the properties box for KSP in Steam, right click the game and click Properties. Then look for the "Set launch options..." button -
Merged posts, GregroxMun, please don't multipost in future, thank you.
-
Guys, there's no need to take a defensive attitude over everything, seriously.
-
Woah... I just cranked KSP up to something like 60 FPS.
sal_vager replied to Starwhip's topic in KSP1 Discussion
This is only effective in fullscreen mode really, and you can use antialiasing to improve the image, if in windowed mode all you get is a smaller screen. -
This game is too easy to abuse, sorry guys but I think it is covered under rule 2.4 Especially when it's used to hide profanity.

Welcome to the community Andrew There's many players here who can help, and it's a good idea to check out the Gameplay section and the Spacecraft Exchange for examples of craft. Also you can let the developers know how much you love KSP here. Have fun on the forums and fly safe !

TheDominatorIV, I suggest you try again, but next time please post your images to Imgur.com, then use the URL to the images here

:/ Of course! A properly made de lavel nozzle should give you a pretty tight stream of exhaust gasses, as shown in this pic, and that could be used as a weapon. Actually, that reminds me of the PBC's from Independence War.

Cruise missiles, with solid metal warheads that are propelled by shaped explosive charge an instant before impact as there's no atmosphere to transfer the energy of a normal explosive. Or high velocity kinetic projectiles, in large numbers.
-
I'm not convinced railguns are all that great, the gun itself is very complex and expensive, requires ridiculous amounts of power and like a directed energy weapon it'll generate a lot of heat, that power to the magnetic coils has to go somewhere and not all will be transferred to the projectile. One reason for the development of railguns is the inordinate range they can offer in a atmosphere, this is not a factor in space.
-
That'd be a very difficult thing to achieve (hitting the propulsion/tank), and if you fired more than one then you improve your odds of hitting considerably.
-
Kinetic energy missiles exist, how much guidance would something like this need do you think?
-
There's nothing to perturb the projectile though ravener, and if the force of the shot is known, which it would be, and the orbit of an unsuspecting target was known a firing solution can be calculated so the orbits of the shot and the target intersect. Also, buckshot
-
Heat from the projectile is also radiated to space over time, if you're too close for that then the velocity of the projectile would not only be too high for your target to avoid (hopefully) he's also already know you're there, so hiding the shots wouldn't be an issue.
-
Well Red, if you are on one side of the planet and your target is on the other, he's not going to see your plume and the projectile will have time to cool down
-
You'd only need one of those guns, as the craft could just turn to face any angle required, you could even fire at a target on the other side of a planet as the projectile would just orbit around till it hit. Stealth cannon projectiles would be the in thing.

I was talking about the heat from a laser or similar directed energy weapon, that'd be considerably greater than any conventional armament, it is an argument in favour of projectile weaponry over fancy lasers. And a vessel would still need to dissipate the heat from the sun, as well as heat from on-board systems, crew, engines and everything else, so I'd expect a warship to have some funky armoured radiators on the back regardless of what weapons it employed
-
InneRs, you're new so maybe you have not seen, but this is a very frequent topic, and is dependent on Unity making a stable 64bit release, this is not something Squad has any control over. As things are now there is a working 64bit Linux binary, Windows and OSX 64bit support is coming just as soon as Unity enables it. I'm going to have to close this thread, it's been done to death, sorry.
-
The hull still needs to remove that heat or it'll build up, remember there are volatiles (fuel) and perishables (crew) in there, also delicate electronics. It'll still need to be radiated to space.
-
ravener, heat pipes do not make heat go away in space, they only move it, likely to a waste heat array but it still has to be removed from a vessel by radiation.
-
I'd like to add to this the issue of heat, heat dissipation is a real problem in space where there is no atmosphere to allow for convection, all heat dissipation is via radiation. I bring this up because directed energy weapons will generate a lot of heat which has to be removed, radiative heating would be slow and having a store of gas to pass over the hot elements of a laser to then dump into space would limit the number of times the laser could be used. A mechanical weapon with solid projectiles would not get anywhere near as hot, even the heat from a heavy machine gun barrel in space would be manageable, so having to deal with heat from such a weapon would not be a concern. Of course, an energy weapon would dump a lot of heat into your target, but a tank round can also cause a lot of thermal trouble to whatever it hits due to the extreme velocity of the impact.

RealFire [Pre-Development] [Just an Idea at this point]
sal_vager replied to hieywiey's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
Maybe you can use the re-entry heat effect for this? It's a hair shader built into Unity. -
Wrong kind of pirate The Destroyer and montyben101, stick to peglegs and parrots please.

Moved to the Space Lounge because Urgh, and also, speculation on how fictional characters reproduce is somewhat disturbing. Don't forget to keep to the rules please, nobbers12345, I recommend you avoid any further profanity.
