Outstanding! The effects are truly spectacular, no less so than the collisions of characters, timelines and plots. I honestly do not know where this is going to end up, who'll live, who'll die, and what planetary bodies if any will be left when the smoke clears!

Off the top of my head, the ones you see in gameplay are: Environmental Visual Enhancements (EVE) Astronomer's Pack Kerbal Alarm Clock Kerbal Engineer USI Life Support USI Core (for the fission reactors) Planetary Base Inc.Systems (habs, science lab and some life support parts) Nebula Decals Wild Blue Industries awesome plasma TV screen And behind the scenes: Kerbal Animation Suite Enhanced IVA Hyperedit (everything I show in the comic is done legit, but sometimes I need use "stunt doubles" for it to look good )

A really good question. I'd like to move the save to 1.1 and continue the mission in the latest version as soon as it's practical to do so. Hopefully the promised performance improvements will be effective in cutting down lag as I continue to dock probes and the combined craft part count soars through the mid-600sies. It would not be practical to update if, of course, any part of Intrepid no longer loads or operates as intended. I am really hoping I don't have to do anything crazy like handbuild a craft file to keep going, but I might prefer that to having to launch and assemble the beast again. Assuming the Intrepid still loads and functions in 1.1 (or 1.1.2 or whatever the first truly stable version ends up being) you can expect Bill to sense "a great disturbance" of some kind once the critical mods are updated.

Quite true, and I'm a little embarrassed to admit it but I'm actually starting to like the Derpstar. Here's the Mk2 ascending with the second load of probes: Swapped the conical tail for the goofy Mk3-Mk2 adapter which I always thought too derpy to use, but here, well, you get it. Also a fifth RAPIER rather than TRJ. I left the tail of the adapter bluff so I'd have a place to put linear thrusters. Also, speedbrakes are up on the tail per recommendations. (thanks guys!) Still flying the last missions and won't post an actual comic page until I'm about ready to leave LKO, so here's a little more docking pr0n to tide you over: L and R pod forward bays are both open: Scansat 1 is in lower R pod, Scansat 2 approaching. You'll note I took some tanks off in the final config and I did go with the 10-linear 2-O10 layout. Was interesting to have to fire the engine when I needed a -X translation, but it worked and I like the look of them. Vacuum dV appears to be quite sufficient. Hm, not sure we can call it a flotilla if the interplanetary transfer is all in one piece and the craft don't separate until they are just about to reach their objective. Hopefully it will look cool enough to count as a (peaceful and scientific) macross missile massacre O ye of little faith No fuel? No power? No problem! You'll have to wait a bit to see how "good" her second landing was though.

Oh! Sorry about that, I don't think your initial text was really so confusing, I just read my own method into the description. Looking back I see it should have been obvious what you were doing. The pics will definitely help though for anyone else as slow-witted as me

Stunt doubles! What a great idea I admit I do the same thing, I have a mirror save of the main one which includes all the characters and a "playset" version of my big laggy ship that's just the crew spaces. Much easier to get the angles and facial reactions I want that way: "Hm, Bob doesn't look 'concerned' enough... ALT-F12... WHACK!"

Nice to see all this coming together, and good teaching moment from Joan. Diddling RCS to perfect an intercept is a woefully underappreciated art form. I think a lot of pilots get so wrapped up in trying to drag the maneuver node arrows into perfect position that they forget how useful trial and error can be, especially when each "trial" just costs two puffs of mono

Things are going well, but I think I'm not going to be in position for an update for a bit. (one can only do so much when the source material is a 3x repeated SSTO mission involving probes ) At this point the Derpstar Two ("The Second Derping!") has made orbit and "ripple fired" its cargo of three scansats to intercept Intrepid. Had to do it this way as I was "bingo" LF in the correct sense, that is I had enough to de-orbit and maybe do a powered landing, but not to intercept Intrepid and then do so. Challenge was juggling the burns among three scansats in such a way I--er, Dilsby-- didn't have to be in two or more places at once, but I ended up with a nicely staggered formation like this: ...this all happened on the night side (another good reason not to try to make a comic out of it) and I've enhanced the brightness so you can kind of make out the active probe in the foreground. That one is now safely docked in R-bay, with the second one holding station at 600 meters and the third just completing its final intercept burn. Next up we'll see how Samantha does landing an (allegedly) improved Derpstar with significantly less LF in the tanks. What happened to the fuel? Well, operator error. The Derpstar's test run ended up in orbit with 800 m/s to spare, but when I did it for reals I had less than 200. In the latter, I climbed too steeply from 8-15 km and failed to build up enough speed, then climbed too shallow from 15km to 22km trying to get to 1350, and spent too much time in mid atmosphere. Anyway, she'll get to try it again, assuming her second landing is at least a "good" one. Next flight will carry the fourth and final scansat, plus the two Jooldiver probes, and then she's scheduled for one more to bring up Kenlie, Gumdrop Two and maybe a rover. I'll see what pics I have in the file after all that and put together some kind of story

Even for not-tiny spaceplanes often just use 4 RCS blocks mounted in pairs fore and aft, with a place-anywhere next to each. Skimmeroo does this. That gives translation in all directions, reaction wheels take care of rotation, and it avoids the problem of finding spots on the top rear of the ship in and around where the tail assembly wants to go.

I love how you guys are splitting kilograms for a probe that will have something like 3600-3800 vacuum dV, depending on whether it's 5 1/2 linear ports or two thruster blocks, carried on a 1200 ton monster with several km/s on full tanks which I've never even bothered to calculate because ISRU. No, really! No sarcasm! Really! This is among other things an engineering game, so why not be the best, most optimalist engineer you can possibly be?

I like this a lot, @Starhawk. I think that the best mission reports all present a set of missions, ships, personalities or all of the above that are not just exciting and well-executed but different from the readers' own experiences in their own S.A.V.E.s. After all, why should I read about your Jeb orbiting Kerbin when I have one of my very own? You started with a rule--not just "leave no kerbal behind", but "go rescue every kerbal". This made for a really fun challenge in going to low solar orbit, and now by extension of that concept you have a perfect excuse reason to put a team of big darn heroes in a home base and set up some fun adventures. The ships are cool, the story is fun to read, and nods to the "marker guy" and a certain flag officer are noted and appreciated--as I'm sure certain directors of shanghaiing operations (wow, that word made it through spellcheck on the first time?) will appreciate your kerbs' thought process regarding acronyms
-
That's quite a presumption for an alien species, isn't it? All we really know is that there are two basic kinds of kerbal, one of which has eyelashes. Anything else is pure humanocentric speculation.

I should have known.

Really good points--let's see: I think where I ended up is 10 total linears, not 12: if I miss the bay going in, I can just puff the main engines to back out, right? But yeah,4xblocks might be more optimal I actually did to that on the Jooldipper probes (not pictured) and it works perfectly. However, I might just like the look of the linear ports better. Maybe I can get the number down to 6, I have plenty of torque installed to handle the imbalance of the single off-center RTG. Regarding the electrical system--the reason for the battery is to have enough charge to transmit the scan. in the Bill Space Program test just concluded, about 700 charge (net) was consumed to get the scan picture. So I think that battery mass may be necessary. And regarding O-10s etc: no, I don't think I want to go with a single off-center one. TWR is already pretty low, and I don't want to do cheaty clippy things Port will stay as-is, I'm not going to refit Intrepid at this point, and I also am concerned about the stiffness of a junior port under ship maneuvers. Actually that's kind of the plan, because "ripple firing" the probes at the moons from just within Jool SOI would be crazy awesome. But if I screw up or any of that or it otherwise doesn't work, I want to build in the capability to shoot them from a local position.

Yep. All probes and boats have an AG0 to disable their RCS, which we trigger during the docking maneuver. Intrepid actually doesn't use any RCS at all--her OMS is on vernors.

Long-term Laythe Mission (pic heavy) - ^_^ With Part 45 ^_^
Mister Dilsby replied to Brotoro's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Exactly. I hope my Laythe looks like that when I get there, it's more interesting. -
I probably will. I have a concept for it but it can't be executed for some time, because the concept involves things that can only happen after the Intrepid arrives in the Jool system. So, remember that time when everyone was going CROSSOVER CROSSOVER DO A CROSSOVER! and I said SHADDAP ALREADY I HEARD YOU! and then everyone did because you're all wonderful and then a couple of months later Kappa Jeb showed up and we were all like OHMAGERD CROSSOVER!? Yeah. But then there was also the time when people were going DRES DRES DRES LOVE WE DEMANDS ZEE DRES! and I was like SHADDAP ALREADY MY COUNSEL WILL I KEEP! and we still haven't been to Dres. But then again I never said I had a concept for a cool Dres story so read into that whatever your tinfoil-shielded brains tell you Speaking of probes, I did test @Rune's concept for the Scansats and I like it: This succeeded (barely) in my "A" criterion of being able to go from a 500km orbit around Jool to a polar orbit around Tylo in its own power. A design with fewer tanks can meet the less difficult criterion "B" which is to go from a 100km equatorial orbit around Tylo to a polar one. Also speaking of probes, while I was landing the Derpstar and doing Tedus's EVA inside the hangar deck to take those screenshots last update, I kind of forgot about the Tugbot: Whoops. Fortunately the little guy has plenty of mono and its own RTG, we'll get that stowed properly in the aft ramp before we do anything else. Am also playing with some designs for Derpstar Two (The Second Derping) to try and cut the number of flights needed from three to two. But it would be worth three if I also bring a cute little rover for Sarge to drive on Bop, right? Stay tuned

So hey, just one question cowboy--do you take your hat off when you put on your space helmet, or just kind of crush it down? Asking for a friend.
-
I'm not saying I will... but if I did, I know exactly how I'm going to do it. I even have a song picked out. Oh no, what have I done! Foxbat, there are so many better cargo SSTOs out there than the Derpstar! When my kids see it they both laugh and go "Derp derp derp". But I'm glad it worked for you Maybe the Mark II will be more successful.

Don't worry, the new scansats are just like the old just with mono instead of LFO. You'll fall in love all over again, I assure you! But let us never forget... le beep... le beep... le beep...

Agree completely. Just tested the new scansats, and converted the Jooldivers to mono and tested them as well. Simpler and better all around, so that's what will go up in Samantha's next Derpstar flight!

In my case it wasn't the shape, it was that the design was a little reminiscent, to me, of a @Cupcake... dropship (in being a monopropellant-only lander built compactly around a Mk2 inline cockpit) though very unlike a Cupcake design in execution (there not being a clean line on the whole thing). Hence "drop" for "dropship" and "gumdrop" for a sort of confectionary tribute to an inspirational designer

Argh, this is the second time this week I found I inadvertently picked a name for a craft (Gumdrop) used in someone else's published space program. Sorry! As my penance I will now make sure to read through all of this excellent mission
