Bad science in fiction Hall of Shame
Gargamel replied to peadar1987's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Picked up the Avengers movie bundle the other day, as I haven't seen the last two yet. And dangit, there are just too many movies to follow. There comes a point where having a movie universe is almost too cumbersome for the interested, but not dedicated viewer. Anyways, in Age of Ultron, the goal is to fly a city into space, and drop it onto the planet, causing an extinction level event. Nope, I haven't run the math, but I'm pretty sure there wont be enough energy released to do so. Now, the engines kicking on in reverse, like they did, maybe.... but I still sorely doubt it. Assuming a block of earth 1/5 the size of Everest (usually a good metric), how high would they have to free fall from to release enough energy to kill (almost) everything? -
A thread for a repository of commonly used images on the forums. Feel free to add any more you find or use as inline images. I have a few threads I follow purely because they contain an image I would like to post every now and then. Sorting through all my followed content, and then within the thread itself can be quite tedious. This thread will act as a reference point for the images we like to use. To post a pic, find the image in it's base source (ie, no google image links, use the original site, they just seem to work better). Right click the image and click "copy image location". Then click "Insert other media" on 'reply' section, "insert image from URL", and paste the image location there. Please, no direct links to images or albums, just the image itself. To use a pic from the thread, right click the image you want, and follow the same instructions as above, but in the thread you are posting to. Here's a couple to start:

How do you open up the debug menu?
Gargamel replied to Flymetothemun's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I think it's Ctrl-Alt-F12 that will bypass the Nvidia software. -
Lab transfer data via relay?
Gargamel replied to darkwhite's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
AFAIK, transmitting data will only go to the KSC. There might be a mod that changes this, but I don't believe there is a stock option for this. -
How to obtain negative lift?
Gargamel replied to Apaseall's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Repeating.... Aside from ice caps and runways, there aren't many places in the solar system flat enough with an atmosphere to get a rover going fast enough to create lift anyways. There are plenty of places to create lift and take off, but the speed required to create a downforce would destroy most rover designs, due to the bump and undulations of the terrain. -

The chemical name for titin and other real long words
Gargamel replied to The Minmus Derp's topic in The Lounge
You guys may not have any more combined words than the rest of us, but you guys do have some doozies. When I was working as a woodworker, a lot of our cabinetry hardware would come from Blum, a German company, or at least one that speaks German. Some of the names of the things would would buy were printed on the packaging, but were so long the word would wrap all the way around it. -
Most of us have, but refuse to admit it. But there is a reason that pic exists.....

When registering for a forum account, the OS the person is using should be required. It would be displayed on the left, below their location and such. It would only be required when registering, and can easily be disabled in the options, allowing for opt-outs. For concerns surrounding the GDRP and other such privacy issues, an "other" option would be listed. So when registering, the user would be asked from a list of OS's: Windows Mac Linux PS4 Xbox Other The exact version of each doesn't matter, it just relates to the version of KSP they are using. The reason for this is when we get new users asking for questions or requesting support, it helps narrow down issues relating to the OS. Existing users would not be required to add this, and once it's disabled by the user, the line would disappear from the header. Of course, this may not be possible with the Forum Engine, but I think it might be.

The chemical name for titin and other real long words
Gargamel replied to The Minmus Derp's topic in The Lounge
Even sign language (for deaf people, not road signs) has this problem. The sign for "brother" in Japanese Sign Language is considered a rude gesture in America (and other places). -
Parts breaking in 1.4.5
Gargamel replied to Cavscout74's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
If the payload tank is still wobbling, you can try to old method of strutting, like by using struts. Inside the fairing, attach 4-6 of them in symmetry, and bring them up to the bottom of the payload, or where ever is appropriate. When the stage drops away, it will take the struts with it. -
What an ugly plane.

Bad science in fiction Hall of Shame
Gargamel replied to peadar1987's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Union by-laws. Rematerializing a previously deceased crew member would result in a copy of the original, but since the copy has not paid his union dues, and is not properly on the payroll, he is not eligible to serve on the ship as his counterpart was. -
Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical questions
Gargamel replied to DAL59's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Fair enough, point taken guys. I should have expounded on that so the poster understands the difference between realworld SOI's and KSP SOI's. -
I have no help for this, but I'd love to see some pics.

The chemical name for titin and other real long words
Gargamel replied to The Minmus Derp's topic in The Lounge
Been there. No, it's just common courtesy on a forum to not hit people with a huge wall of text. Spoiler tags are the most appropriate. Code or Quote tags leave the wall of text up there. Having a medical background and understanding most of that.... ewwwww..... -
Lesson learned. In the future, a half now, half on delivery is a good way to ensure your costs are covered when building bespoke items, and gives the customer incentive to actually take delivery. Taking half now will cover your material costs and time, and the half on delivery should be almost all profit.

Bad science in fiction Hall of Shame
Gargamel replied to peadar1987's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Possibly by the way the data is encoded. It might not be feasible to sort through all the data to find the one little bit they have to fix. Plus, not only are they transporting the person, but all the microorganisms that live in them. that would show up as foreign DNA too, and if you remove all the good bugs, you're pretty much dead. -
Way Out of Grissom Crater, Tylo
Gargamel replied to Zosma Procyon's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Then it didn't happen, and your officially still stuck in the crater. Reports to the contrary shall be ignored.
