Bad science in fiction Hall of Shame
Gargamel replied to peadar1987's topic in Science & Spaceflight
We do not try to apply logic to super hero movies. The latest Thor movie has goats running into a planet, head first. No.... no logic here. -
Wonder if anybody can click?

Changes to Your Kerbal Account [Discussion Thread]
Gargamel replied to StarSlay3r's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I don’t see any mention of October 17. But it’s somewhat meaningless as the switch over happened a year ago. -
@Atlasik your question has been split off from the TOTM thread it was in and moved to tech support.

KSP 2 Multiplayer Discussion Thread
Gargamel replied to Johnster_Space_Program's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
There it is. This is what we've been asking of you. If a statement is your opinion, you must make that clear. To do otherwise leads to confusion, disagreements, and damages your credibility to where everybody just ignores you. We have. The two brothers who came up with the game, HarvesteR and Moach used to be very active here. The devs come around from time to time, and I have chatted with them on a number of topics. The game was never supposed to be any of the things you are saying. It was only supposed to be what it is, maybe a bit less.- 1,629 replies

For Questions That Don't Merit Their Own Thread
Gargamel replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Some very quick and dirty googling has it about 50W per 2mm of area melted (That was me just scanning a number of papers to find a ballpark energy cost). Let's scale this up to 150mm... and to think Perseverance, which can use upto 900w for operations at a time, and it's not outside the realm of possibility of a larger fabrication rover being able to do something in the future. But that's just me, who is horrible with electrical numbers, spitballing. I can see some unmanned drone fleet landing ahead of a long term manned mission and building the basic infrastructure of buildings that would be outfitted later by the manned mission. An inflatable habitat, a la The Martian, being erected inside a hardened basic form could create early long term living spaces. My biggest concern for lasers in this type of application would be maintenance. Keeping the parts clean enough to function while throwing loads of dirt at them would be a concern. But that's why engineers make the big bucks! Or so they tell me when I point out an error in their blue prints at work. There's others here who will know the number way better than I, but would the mass cost of the mechanism to make it a multi-environment engine outweigh the mass cost and simplicity of just making a dedicated upper stage? Take a look a planes like the Concord, F-14, and F-111. Those all had heavy mechanisms to make radical adjustments to their air frames, but at what cost? They worked, but it's obvious there might be simpler and more efficient solutions. -
As I don’t play with the controller much, I can’t say if you’re right or wrong here, but there’s a couple red flags in your theory. As you say, If it has been been broken for a few years, the wiki would have been updated most likely. Again if it was broken for that long, there would be some threads on it most likely. Do a deep search on the topic to see if you get any hits. Anytime I’m doing something similar and I get results that don’t seem to be right, I always try to go back and double check my methods to make sure I’m not the cause of the error. Double check your work to make sure you are, in fact, doing everything correctly. Once you’ve ruled out user error, then there is probably a problem. And nobody really uses the SQUAD account much anymore. Especially since the game has ceased development, its best to ask within the community first.

The flip side is that sintering takes a lot of energy. You’re basically welding dirt. -
This question has been split off into its own thread from the thread for questions that don’t merit their own thread, as it does require its own thread.

Having Dunning-Kruger and Imposter syndrome at the same time is really confusing.

What I assumed from a 'main stream' media article was that it was, as usual, a real stretch in the headline. But it was kinda accurate it seemed. Reporter: "So you grew a brain that can play pong?" Scientist: "Well, not really, we grew brain cells, added some interfaces, and then it played pong." Reporter: "....... so you grew a brain that can play pong?" Scientist: "No not really.... but sorta...."

While I agree target fixation, "Go Fever" is an issue, with proper holds and a "Stop Work for All" system in place, where any Engineer or technician, even down to the lowliest truck driver or what not, can stop any countdown or work till a problem is addressed adequately is a major fix to this issue. Even if all but one person is go for launch, any person that speaks up and says "Hey, I think we have a problem here" (and is not held accountable for a false stoppage if they're wrong) can save a mission, and encourages people to do so. The raised issue is then reviewed and approved/fixed, and then that work/review is required to be passed up the chain so that it can be reviewed itself. Places that have this type of system in place often reward "Stop Work" calls, even if they're erroneous, in an effort to encourage nothing getting missed. While an engineer(s) did speak up prior to Challenger, the local contractor signed off on the issue and never fully communicated the issue up the chain so that other outside engineers could take a look. In the aftermath, this type of system was implemented to some degree in NASA. While there are probably some holes in the system, it's a far stretch better than what they had before, where contractors were compelled to make deadlines and budget at the cost of quality at times.

should ksp 2 have underwater environment
Gargamel replied to REDdix's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
You know what, a random easter egg creature (giant squid perhaps?) that roams the oceans would be cool to run into. No interaction, just some random solitary squid.
