  1. And well done at that! I find that putting a probe core (an okto 2 is my fave for this) right under the seat as its "mount" comes in very handy. You can control from there and everything is "correct." Another trick is to rotate the seat so the Kerbal is lying on his back. That's fine. If the Kerbal was on the surface of Dres (don't even need to get out and plant a flag though why you wouldn't escapes me ) and recovers on the surface of Kerbin, that counts as returned from Dres.
  2. Not sure I can take credit for it. Squad wrote the code and someone else showed how to hack the files, I just took the last logical leap and made it into the modman config. I've not used it for some time but here it is if someone wants to try it. If you have troubles getting docked, knock that "0.999" down to "0.99" though IIRC 0.999 is fine. Also, if you don't want to lock it to 45 degrees (90, 30, and 15 are common wants) you can change that too. @PART[*]:HAS[@MODULE[ModuleDockingNode]:HAS[!snapOffset[*]]] { @MODULE[ModuleDockingNode] { captureMinRollDot = 0.999 snapRotation = true snapOffset = 45 } }
  3. You should be able to do the Bop transfer for essentially free. Tweak your trajectory right after you enter Jool's SOI and you'll be surprised at the variety of orbits you can get. Regarding aerobraking, I think you'd be fine but better than that, I suggest you quicksave and try it, especially because there are no in game tools to predict what will happen after the braking.
  4. Very nicely done! I may steal borrow ideas from that Eve lander. Because I hate Eve and get ever more frustrated with it with every attempt. I'll mark you as 18/18 but not a "WINNER" yet. Congrats on the hard part! EDIT: I somehow missed your Moho report. Sorry about that, but you won all the same so no harm no foul
  5. Depends on the payload, really. Generally for small payloads, I dump the launch stage right before circularization (so it burns up in atmo), so it's as close to an SSTO as you can get without actually doing the O part. For larger payloads where I have to actually put thought into the launcher, I like the first stage to get me up maybe 20km or so where I'm really starting to flatten out, because I'm no longer fighting gravity and the air is thin enough to basically be in space, so you can switch to the more efficient, less beefy engines with no problems.
  6. Planet? Kerbin. Especially with cities and clouds. No other planet can I orbit just watching the terrain go by for fun. Planetary system? Jool. Gravity assists are just so fun.
  7. And now you can finally go to Mun and Minmus for the unlock we all got first
  8. Very cool! I don't have time to look at all the pics right now but I'm updating the leaderboard.
  9. Poor planning and bad encounters cause a much more storied (and not really a) "Jool 5" mission than I was planning for. Don't look at the scoreboard if you don't want spoilers, because this is far from a sure thing.
  10. Also there's a huge mass nearby that goes around the Moon (from its perspective) once a month. The Moon is so big and so close that it pulls the oceans toward it visibly on the near side (and the Earth away from the oceans on the far side). Imagine what the Earth does to the Moon. Sure it's not enough to send you careening into space or anything, but over time that takes its toll on an orbiter.
  11. I checked the Eeloo checkbox today. It's a rare manned mission because I didn't want to have to think about comms and - I mean come on it's Eeloo. I really only *need* one more building unlock to complete this whole thing - the R&D building for vectors or aerospikes for the Eve liftoff. However, I basically have the exact amount of money to unlock it right now so I'd not be able to build a ship. So, I'm doing the entire Jool system next and Eve will be the finale of the series. Maybe with a contracts montage to make the money to upgrade the rest of the space center.
  12. To be fair, that's like hearing about a crime in Central Park and saying "Thanks for reminding me why I don't go to parks."
  13. Note: You can totally create a new stage in-flight, with a spent booster in it, and hit the spacebar to "ignite" that empty booster and test it.
  14. Well done! As in, those astronauts were well done by the time they died. Yes that's happened to me several times, and is why Moho 3 wasn't Moho 2. I can understand that. I am putting the final touches on my not-jool-5 mission, because there's no reason to come home I just sent lander probes. With amusing results when... well I'll wait until I post it.
  15. I don't know why, but I'm really happy I have no idea what you're talking about or who Jake Paul is.
  16. After quite some time I finally got an episode up. I'm going to Moho and back if it kills me. Which it almost did. See the exploits of "Moho 3" (all documentation about Mohos 1 and 2 were destroyed in the great fire of year 104) below
  17. I think the Kerbin system has been designed fairly brilliantly. It matches our Solar System closely enough so we can do a "Mars mission" or a "Mercury Mission", but each planet and moon - for the most part - is a unique experience and takes a different approach to master. Mun is a good first step for a new player, and gives you that feel of doing the Apollo program. Minmus is actually easier to do a whole mission to, and introduces you to orbital tilt. Duna has Ike, which could be a new player's first introduction to the game literally putting something in your way when you don't (yet) have the gameplay skills to avoid it. Eve has Gilly, which can be a real pain to rendezvous with but is so light you may have trouble staying landed. Also, it requires far more dV to escape than even Kerbin, giving a unique challenge to the player. Moho teaches you just how hard it is to slow your orbit enough to do things near the Sun. Dres has asteroids orbiting it. Free fuel! Jool is Jupiter. Who doesn't want to go to Jupiter? Also, it has Laythe, a great (though unrealisitc if that's your thing) unique reason to take an air-breathing engine into space. It has Tylo, which is basically Kerbin without air. It has Pol and Bop, which could probably be more unique but hey. And Vall suffers from the "not very unique" in that it's not all that different from Mun, Ike, and Dres. Eeloo has a very eccentric orbit and feels like you're doing a mission to Pluto. If I had to criticize, I'd say Moho, Dres, and Eeloo are a bit too same-y. Pol and Bop are as well (along with Gilly), and Vall feels like it's just there to be a 5th moon.
  18. this is probably a good place to start: https://www.google.com/search?q=ksp+modding+unity+gui&oq=ksp+modding+unity+gui&aqs=chrome..69i57j33.16088j0j4&client=ms-android-verizon&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8 (No I'm not LMGTFYing you. I suggest that because i happen to know the specific terms too search on though they are not necessarily the terms you'd think of)
  19. Nothing will happen to this forum. At the very worst, excessive image linking will be curtailed. Text data is a blip in internet traffic. Forums won't be affected at all. Be more worried that you'll have to pay to download updates to KSP.
  20. Oh no I didn't go to Duna first. I was just saying that was POSSIBLE. It was @jonny who actually did it.
  21. Oh you didn't turn reverts on? Sweet. I'll update the list now
  22. Yay! Congrats! Moho is no joke. I know, I just completed my return mission from it this morning. I won't have the video until tomorrow at best though. You get an unlock for landing (i.e., right now) and another for the return, when you get it eventually.
  23. Watch out. I recall distinctly a book for sale a year or two ago that was a huge scam. Not much more than copy/paste of forum posts or something like that. The book by Paul Fenwick is NOT what I'm talking about, and with any luck the other book isn't even available anymore. I'd just hate someone to buy that scam book thinking they were getting this one.
  24. Well done, there. You're really trekking along even without the Kerbin SOI upgrade.
  25. Very nicely done! Welcome to 2nd place on the leaderboard! Your plan was very similar to mine: Get to Tylo, and do most everything from there. I like going to Laythe first, though. I may do that next time. This time. Whatever
