Yeah I try to go up there with a Claw so I can pull it out of orbit as I'm saving the Kerbal. However it's still annoying. I put a lot of effort in keeping my orbits clear, and all this junk just gets in the way.

How to preform orbital insertion????
Superfluous J replied to John Doe's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
No, that's an absolute. If you are in orbit around a planet and not otherwise accelerating, you are in an ellipse with one focus the planet. Period. If you are in a circular orbit, the planet is at the center. Period. If you are going around in a circle and the thing you are going around is NOT at the center, you are NOT orbiting. Period. There are no exceptions to this.- 50 replies

How to preform orbital insertion????
Superfluous J replied to John Doe's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Except you can't be orbiting something in a perfect circle unless that thing is exactly at the center (disregarding it moving due to your gravitational influence on it) of the circle. And there is no way to orbit in an ellipse without the thing you're orbiting being at one of the foci.- 50 replies

Heap of bugs
Superfluous J replied to TAz00's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
Hmm I have this too but it's far more persistent. I thought it was a mod causing it but maybe I should try to recreate it in stock. -
In my new 1.1 career I can't decouple a booster without it hitting some poor sod who somehow got his plane cockpit stranded in LKO.

How did I miss this for a YEAR? Very cool. I may take this mod along on my upcoming Grand Tour.

What is your biggest science pet peeve in movies?
Superfluous J replied to todofwar's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Mine is kinda meta. It's the insistence (by otherwise reasonable people) that bad science in science fiction is okay because "What would you rather have, good science or good fiction?" To these people, I used to point out that that's just as dumb as saying Blazing Saddles is a romantic comedy. I mean, you can't expect a romantic comedy to have BOTH romance AND comedy, right? Nowadays, though, I point at The Martian and tell them to stuff it. -
Narrow band resource scanner - what for?
Superfluous J replied to Corovaneer's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I don't think they want you to have a choice. What you're supposed to do is bring the big one and get it into a polar orbit, and then use the smaller one to find a spot (usually on the Equator. There are too many good reasons to stick near there). These two tasks are inherently different AND tied together, making for a more difficult and (presumably) rewarding experience. If you could use the narrow one by itself, nobody would ever use the big one. That would make the game easier but the gameplay less... something. Deep? That doesn't sound like the right word but it's what they were going for. The above said, I agree with the decision. ISRU is already a free ticket to Easy Town, no sense making it easier to get started. -
Narrow band resource scanner - what for?
Superfluous J replied to Corovaneer's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
The global scan tells you kinda where to expect ore. You can actually go over a big swath of deep pink (or whatever color you use) with the narrow scanner and find that in fact the concentration there is garbage. This is because (as an example) there are 2 good areas just north and south of the area that looks good on the map, so the global scan combined them into a blob. Likewise, those two good areas may appear lesser on the big map because they are bordered by low concentration areas, making the average concentration poor. Of course, without a stock way to drop waypoints based on what you find, the scanner itself has limited utility. But with Waypoint Manager it's a nice way to pinpoint great areas before even going down. The surface module, IMO, is just to make sure that you landed in a good spot. It's better for prospector probes that land first and hop around looking for the best place. I don't really even know if its strictly needed. -
While waiting for a few essential mods to update before starting new YouTube series, I have been playing a career game. Nothing special, just futzing around and trying stuff. I'm waiting for the Duna window (determined with sly use of maneuver nodes and no outside help or that math figurin' y'all do) now, and in the meantime my new Claw is cleaning up hulks from LKO that I left behind when rescuing Kerbals in early career.

You are the 2nd I've seen ask this, though this is not part of the game. I just loaded up 1.0.5 and tried it to make 100% sure. All I can guess is that some mod allowed this for you before, and either you've not got it installed now or they disabled that part of it for some reason in 1.1.
-
Could you more precisely define "properly"? I've been playing early career (when the bugs let me. Stupid wheels and landing gear.) and had no trouble re-entering Kerbin's atmosphere with just such a pod. Sometimes 4 of them stacked with 2 parachutes. Scratch that. You were talking about 1.0. Yeah that was an amusing bug. 1.0 wasn't up to release standards. 1.0.4 was, as was 1.0.5.

In theory, in a highly eccentric orbit, the spewing of monoprop could have imparted more force on your craft than the wispy air at 50+km altitude. There ain't much air up there.

How to preform orbital insertion????
Superfluous J replied to John Doe's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Looking like a circle and being a circle are two different things. For an orbit to be a circle, Ap and Pe MUST be the same. Period. End of story. Don't forget to tip the wait staff.- 50 replies

How to preform orbital insertion????
Superfluous J replied to John Doe's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Circles are ellipses, and (as the jiggling indicators shows) Ap and Pe don't matter there. I consider them nonexistent. In the case of hyperbolic or parabolic orbits, those are special cases of course. As has already been said, though, you still wouldn't use "-gee" on the end.- 50 replies

Don't you know release numbers don't mean anything? (other side of face) Yaaaay 1.0 we're released woo hoo release 1.0 yaaaaay! (back to other side) I don't know what you're talking about. We've always been at war with Oceania in Early Access.

Navball doesn't bug me too much. I'm more irked that it's in the center than that it's so big. In fact, I like it that size, but off center. I have no problem with any of the other UI elements at 100%, including the font quality. Agreed on editor scrolling. It should do what QuickScroll did/does, and scroll by page with the mouse wheel. The space center buttons are not for us. We know where everything is and - more importantly - the fact that those buildings are clickable. The buttons are for new people who might not even know that Mission Control is a thing. I won't speak on game balance. I'm not a game dev and this game is about as balanced as it's always been and I'm therefore by now used to it I can't speak much on the wheels either. I've only used the LY-01 and LY-05s (the first two you unlock in career) and I've never had them explode. They used to jitter around like crazy until the plane flipped over, but they only do that now when connected to the Science Jr. So, I don't connect them to the Science Jr. And I filed a bug report for it. My game has never crashed, even in prerelease. I alt-tab away a lot and leave it running in the background too. That part has been rock solid for me.

Seriously? That guy's name is SNOKE? My theory is he's Dooku's grandson. Stupid names run in their family. His grandfather had one. He has one. His sister Hoopadoop has one.

[1.12.x] Kerbal Alarm Clock v3.13.0.0 (April 10)

Hopefully some day someone who's having these problems will report them or, if they're already reported, corroborate with any helpful information they can. -
Where to put a Jool refueling base
Superfluous J replied to Ultimate Steve's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I don't actually know, but in my upcoming Grand Tour, the current plan is to park the Mothership in high Tylo orbit and go out from there to the other moons. While time-intensive, it is very cheap to get to any other moon from high Tylo orbit, and very easy to get into Tylo orbit both from other moons and from interplanetary journeys. So, I'm thinking the best place is Tylo, getting shipments of ore or fuel from Pol or Bop, or both.
