  1. How much dV is needed to go from GEO (GSO) to lunar impact? Looking at the subway maps, it takes more dV to circularize in GEO from LEO than it does for a lunar intercept, but it doesn't list GEO-to-intercept. Just curious as to how much more it would take to move junk from the GEO 'graveyard' belt to a lunar intercept, so the scrap could be collected from the surface. I know it would probably be too widely scattered to be worthwhile; just spitballin' here. Probably easier to collect the stuff from the graveyard belt for salvage directly (I know there's little point to that at this time). I know there's practically infinite room there, but that's what they thought about LEO at first too. Given a few hundred years of GEO launches, it may start to feel crowded...
  2. Yeah, 700 damaged, one tile missing altogether https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/STS-27
  3. I'm usually in the scorekeeper box during my kid's home hockey games, running the clock and music while my wife does the scorekeeping. One of the other kids requested this as their "goal song," and as such I don't generally hear the whole thing. which is a surefire way to get a song stuck in one's head as your brain tries to complete it...
  4. In this context, I'm disappointed that my brain insists on following "it was twenty years ago today" with "Sgt Pepper taught the band to play." Probably why everyone is using that exact phrase. But such a preventable tragedy, especially given the previous close calls such as STS-27, which probably only survived because the missing tile was over the spot where there was an aluminum antenna mounting plate.
  5. Yeah, when I started at the retread plant years ago, I was frequently dreaming about tread. Oh wait, that was probably a typo. My bad. There was a thread about dreams here years back, but it would be quite stale by now, if not mummified…
  6. A few factoids about todays launch, courtesy of teslarati: 200th Falcon 9 launch, of which 199 were successful. 177 consecutive successful launches. 138th launch of flight-proven boosters. 93rd consecutive successful landing of booster.
  7. Well, that depends on how fast the surface wind is. Also, if you can keep the water around you from circulating, it won’t steal as much heat. Groups of people in frigid water should huddle together to minimize heat loss

  10. https://www.sciencealert.com/shooting-tiny-high-speed-bullets-at-a-spacecraft-could-speed-up-travel-to-the-stars I wonder how far out they think they can hit the target? What happens if they trace a pellet beam across Mars, Phobos, Deimos, or Psyche?
  11. Starfish, er, sea stars eat coral? Huh. Learned something new…
  12. Well, they need to see how many gremlins the static fire shook loose. And they kept calling it “flight-like”. I’d guess they’ll want to do a full WDR as if it is go for launch
  13. From this week's Arstechnica "Rocket Report" I think we need to petition SpaceX, Musk, Shotwell, and anyone else with some pull, that when (not if) they launch 100 rockets (F9, FH, SHSS, whatever) in a calendar year they need to paint the booster plaid. Or at least the second stage, or the fairing. But preferably the entire thing! "Liftoff of Falcon 9 B1058.23 on SpaceX' 100th mission of the year! They've gone plaid!"

  16. The Canucks are honoring Gino Odjick at tonight's game. The music they were playing during this ceremony was the intro to Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here." Very fitting, and it gave me goosebumps. RIP Gino. You are very much missed, on and off the ice. The Canucks are all in on honoring Gino
