How long have you been a moderator?

I was announced the good new the 11 February at 3h15 pm(EDT)

Which mean that as I'm writing thise post, it's been seven months, eighteen days, seven hours and twenty two minutes.

yes, telling the hours and minutes was very important.

time pass fast: didn't realized I was a mod for this long o.o

EDIT: For posterity, I must say that it was the 11 February of 2015. Yes, I found the will to get the moderation time up to the seconds, but I forgot to say which year I joined :/

Have you never heard of the great forum crash of 2013? Something crashed and made the forum lose all its data. The backup was from several months earlier. There are no users with join dates from about September/October 2012 to March 2013, because literally everything in that window was lost. I don't know the exact details because I wasn't here back then.

EDIT AFTER REPLY: Oh, November to March then?

But... but... but... MY join date is in October 2012...

EDIT: I should probably get to asking a question now...

Is it fun to be a moderator for these forums or is it a bit of a mixed bag?

I know in the past some of you have stated that you feel bad when you take moderation action. However, have you ever felt good for taking moderation action before?

Sometimes good in the sense that a mess is now cleaned up, but the cleanup itself is never enjoyable for me.

"Moderation action" includes a lot of things. Examples: approving new members' first 3 posts, banishing spambots to outer darkness, and we have the ability to edit other people's posts, which means we can often fix things like broken picture links. I get a very nice feeling out of doing that. Somebody has a picture of something he/she is excited about, and wants to share it. :) But something went wrong. :( And then we fix it! :D \o/ \o/ \o/

Yes. Handing out infractions to community members isn't particularly fun. I suppose that comes from growing up as members ourselves, instead of hired monkeys. However, as Van says, there are lots of ways to take positive action also. Personally I prefer to help people out more than anything else, which is why I hang out in the support and questions forums so much.

Cheers,

It has its good days and its bad days. Personally, I think that both the good days and the bond of camaraderie I've grown to feel with my fellow moderators more than makes up for the occasional bad days.

Do you get paid for being a mod and is it your only job?

No monetary compensation here. It's entirely volunteer work, though I do remember getting a nice KSP-themed Space Shuttle plushie in the mail for Christmas a few years back :)

As others have said, there's a lot more to moderation action than warnings, infractions, and bans. Quite a bit of the "invisible work" such as zapping spambots and approving new members' posts (which are both handled through the same queue, incidentally) are sufficiently quick and painless enough on most days that they're almost therapeutic once you get into the habit.

Also, in line with what Claw has said, I also view some things that wouldn't exactly be considered "moderator action" as an important part of the job, such as making sure that new users with questions get the appropriate help and that our more creative sorts get a few words of encouragement. If anything I say as a moderator is going to get a little extra scrutiny from the user base as a whole, then I want to be seen as a positive source of encouragement to people who are making contributions, not just an endless fountain of citations for bad behavior.

While this is already stickied, it's now also featured in this months TOTM, well done Dman979 :)
Yippe kay yay! My first TOTM! More to come, I hope. :D:D:D:D:D

Congratulations, Dman! :D
