One with everything

Recommended Posts

Here's my idea for a challenge:

Use as many distinct parts as possible, and do not use a part twice, and score points by traveling to different locations.

RULES:

  1. You must have only one instance of parts.  That is, your rocket cannot have two of the same part
  2. No modded parts (exceptions: Asteroid day)
  3. No cheating with hyperedit, alt-f12, etc.
  4. Launch clamps or other structures that stay on the ground do not count, either for the points or for duplicate parts. (This is so you can use more than one launch clamp on your unwieldy rocket.)

SCORING:

Points are calculated for each milestone, plus the part count of the vessel at the time of the milestone completion.

Does not explode on launchpad: 10 pts.

Lifts off successfully: 15 pts.

Suborbital trajectory: 30 pts.

Orbit: 50 pts.

Return one Kerbal to Kerbin safely: 50 pts.

Return all command pods (including the command chair, not including any probe core.)(They don't have to be crewed) to Kerbin safely: 70 pts.

Mun fly-by: 100 pts.

Mun orbit: 125 pts.

Mun landing: 175 pts.

Minmus landing: 150 pts.

Solar orbit: 100 pts.

Duna fly-by: 150 pts.

Duna orbit: 175 pts.

Duna landing: 225 pts.

Ike landing 200 pts.

Return from Duna system to safe Kerbin landing: 75 pts.

Craft is a spaceplane: 100 pts.

Jool orbit: 200 pts.

Vall fly-by: 100 pts.

Laythe fly-by: 100 pts.

Eeloo fly-by: 175 pts.

If any of you get farther, than that, we'll work something out.

SCOREBOARD:

  1. @NightshineRecorralis, adding four new scoring objectives, and getting 2316 points!
  2. @purpleivan, with 2026 points!
  3. @5thHorseman, doing a livestream and getting 1444 points!
  4. @Racescort666, with a spaceplane and 1114 points!
  5. @Mad Rocket Scientist, With 264 points

My attempt:

One with everything, with 95 parts.

Vjw0IXo.png

Creative thrust limiter tweaking allowed me to fly an almost straight trajectory, to ~7000 m.  Creative timewarping broke the ship in half, allowing for crew recovery.

10 + 94 + 15 + 94 + 50 + 1 = 264

Interesting mix of restrictions and goals. One question: Is a chair a "command pod"? If I don't return it to Kerbin will I not get the 70 points for returning all command pods to Kerbin?

I like the fact that docking ports are useless, and RCS is almost so.

If I try this, my goal will be to get everything but the SSTO and Spaceplane, and I'll try for the SSTO part if it's not too difficult. Probably won't try for anything extra-kerbin though, just the stated goals. And I may even stream it on Twitch. Maybe even Friday evening...

Yes, the command chair is a command pod, whether it has a kerbal in it or not.  However, the probe control cores are not command pods.  I'll clarify that in the OP.

I can't wait to see your attempt!

There goes my detatchable Mun lander :D

Though... The Claw... Hmmm.

I'm hoping to start this in a couple hours. It'll be on Twitch and I'll also put it up on YouTube eventually. I'll post here if/when I start.

Long story short, DID IT. 157 parts, did everything but the spaceplane part. All 157 parts made it into orbit (and halfway to Minmus) before decoupling just the Minmus/Mun lander.

All 3.5 hours (in 27 parts because I kept dropping on and off of Twitch) are up on Twitch and I'll have an edited down version on YouTube at some point, probably next week.

But my calculations put me at 1082 points, assuming slapping wings on a rocket doesn't make it a spaceplane. If it does, then my score would be 1182.

It was fun watching the stream!  I'll put you on the board, with 1082 points.  I have an idea for what to do with bonus parts like that, I'm going to change the rules slightly.  Basically you  must carry useless parts for points only halfway to your destination.

I'm going away from the forums over the weekend, so don't worry if you don't get put up on the board, just submit your entries!

I'm not sure the "halfway to destination" is that important. I mean, The thing needed 3300m/s of dV in atmo to get to orbit, I just used the remaining 400 or so to start my way to Minmus. Maybe change the points for each thing to be "x points + how many parts you had when you did it"? So if you get to the Mun flyby with those 157 parts (I didn't, I'd have needed a few hundred more m/s) then you'd get those points extra.

Actually that may streamline the whole thing. No need for an SSTO requirement (though maybe give points for that too), just give points for how many parts on the pad, how many parts in orbit, how many parts flying by Mun, how many parts in orbit.

Though that'd be a bigger pain to document and score, so maybe not :D

Okay my last spammy post here. I uploaded an edited (all the way down to 45 minutes!) version of the 3+hour livestream to YouTube. It could probably be shorter but I wanted to capture the iterative design process because I for one found it interesting, even on a rewatch.

Just a comment: Matt Lowne did a Reddit challenge just like this and built a vtol ssto in 1.0.2

Interesting!  Do you have a link?

That makes more sense as a scoring system, but the problem is it requires re-scoring of your entry.  Do you mind doing that?

Not at all. I didn't do it for the points. I did it because it sounded fun :)

Granted I can't say I'd not change it a bit to take more parts to Minmus at least, but I'm content with what I've done for the challenge.

In short, do not avoid changing it on my behalf!

I hope I get this right :)

Does not explode on launchpad: 10 + 157
Lifts off successfully: 15 + 157
Suborbital trajectory: 15 + 157
Orbit: 50 + 157
Return one Kerbal to Kerbin safely: 50 + 4 (pod, ox-stat, parachute, heatshield)
Return all command pods (including the command chair, not including any probe core.)(They don't have to be crewed) to Kerbin safely: 70 + 4
Mun fly-by: 100 + 12 (chute, pod, ox-stat, heat shield, decoupler, 2 fold-out panels, fuel tank, terrier, 3 landing gear)
Mun orbit: 125 + 12
Mun landing: 175 + 12
Minmus landing: 150 + 12
Craft is a spaceplane: 0

So that's 10+15+15+50+50+70+100+125+175+150+(157*4)+(4*2)+(12*4) or 1444. Easily beatable if you bring more parts to all the places.

I've got a working prototype spaceplane (loosely interpreted but it does in fact fly). My plan is a Minmus landing but I'm not sure if I'll make the return.

ETA: I spent all night working on it and tweaking it and I now have no time to actually fly a mission. Hopefully mission update tomorrow.

Sounds good!  Looking forward to seeing it!

Ok, initial attempt. I honestly wasn't going for part count, just something that would work reasonably well. In hindsight, I should have included a battery. There will be a part 2 because I'm convinced I can land on Duna, take off, and return to Kerbin. Although I think that FAT wing will explode in the atmosphere. No idea on scoring but it was 36 parts at liftoff and 20 parts after separating the boosters.

Does not explode on launchpad: 10 + 36
Lifts off successfully: 15 + 36
Suborbital trajectory: 15 + 36
Orbit: 50 + 36
Sun orbit: ?? + 20
Duna flyby: ?? + 20
Duna Orbit: ?? + 20
Duna Flight: ?? + 20
Is a Spaceplane: 100

Or whatever the judges feel appropriate as scoring.

Nice work!  I'll decide on the scoring after you've gotten it to work. :)
