Why would society even bother functioning in the real world at that point, when each individual can play god? It would simply be an more immersive video game. I would probably still use vr headsets and speakers as they are high bandwidth devices. Then use the neural link to both control and fool the body. Yes it would easy be order of magnitudes more immersive but still an game, but yes we would get way more issue with people gaming to much. But how many people now choose to spend their gaming time farming, driving trucks, planning cities, or managing complex resource chains.... They might as well be working! Edit: Read up on the topic of BMIs in general and I have come to realize that I knew pretty much nothing when I posted that. I am no longer surprised that they have a machine this early. The future's gonna be wild, and I'm not sure if I'm ready for that much wild. Edited August 26, 2020 by Ultimate Steve

TV + neuralink + blockchain → all of them are sitting at home and watching TV, while their brains permanently calculate random numbers and checksum and generate bitcoins for the sake of all thinking humanity,

tater
I got the impression from their statements at that previous event that the first uses would be fully medical. Ie: they would use it to treat neurological problems. This is already done with a single wire (? maybe a few?) for epilepsy. I think they have seen some efficacy for some psychiatric issues as well. Probably easier to get permission when something similar is already standard of care. Edited August 26, 2020 by tater

But eventually they're going to start throwing in bonus "summon your Tesla with your mind" options. They've already demonstrated computer mouse use in monkeys. Anyway, I have the feeling this presentation could make Elon seem even more like a supervillain depending on what's in it. There is a real potential for an abuse of that security flaw to not be detectable, such as the Meltdown which affects intel CPUs. While I do not know what the malicious use cases of Nuralink are, I know for a fact that should they become mainstream the results will be catastrophic. I'm not sure what the real risk is outside of medical risk (if leads deteriorate, etc). The computation is done externally as I understand it. Not seeing "catastrophic" as terribly likely. Yeah but it's still computing at your brain and could give you a seizure or something if it locks up. With Bluetooth.

kerbiloid
That's actually great news! Now the DRM can be installed right in the brain chip, so a human will just ignore pirate music and films!
