MinimumSky5
That was the most surreal launch I've ever seen, it looked so graceful in the air, I had to keep reminding myself that Starhopper weighs about 50 tons fully loaded!

Elthy
I wonder why the exhaust greatly changed color/luminosity shortly before touchdown. Seems intended, an engine failure wouldnt have resulted in such a smooth landing. Maybe the injected extra fuel to cool the exhaust to reduce stress on the landing pad? Brotoro
Very nice. Does the Starhopper's use autogenous pressurization for its propellant tanks?
ThatGuyWithALongUsername
In all aspects, that was definitely one of the most Kerbal things SpaceX has done yet! I've been following this for MONTHS, it was kind of surreal to see it hovering like that! Echoing the comments above- THAT WAS AWESOME! NSEP
I know Spadre has been kind of neglected since LabPadre, Everyday Astronaut and SpaceX joined the streaming game, but you can actualy see the launch and hear the sound in its full glory in their streams. Scrub back in time and watch that thing fly. Wooh wee.

CatastrophicFailure
Daaaaaaaaaang! I was not expecting the flight to last that long! What’s the longest burn we know of for a Raptor at this point?

If I had to guess, it's the dust getting sucked through the exhaust and glowing from heat

tater
It would have been pretty spectacular with the fairing on it... that shot Musk tweeted, above, but looking closer to the real thing. CatastrophicFailure
haven’t seen this mentioned yet... apparently right at the end you can see one of the COPV’s get liberated and go flying off on its own...
StrandedonEarth
That was AWESOME! But I can't help but be reminded of... They should have given that flying water tower an R2 paint job. Maybe make a little money advertising for Disney...

The folks over at r/spacex seem to have concluded that it's due to salt in the dust that's being thrown up ending up in the exhaust. The hot plasma heats up the salt until it undergoes pyrolysis, and then the free sodium burns with the oxygen in the air to produce that bright orange flame. RealKerbal3x
That happened at 1AM for me, so I couldn’t watch it live...but I just watched the replay and now must mirror what everyone else has already said... HOLY FLARP THAT WAS AWESOME! That camera got the best possible view...you could clearly see the engine gimbaling and the thrusters firing to keep the vehicle stable! We salute you, Starhopper. Your service to the future of space exploration will not be forgotten
