What's the other one? (The stream has "TGO" on the left and "ROI box within DRACO FOV" on the right.)

The image at the left is the digitally-centered view of the target. The DRACO camera on DART has an overall field of view (FOV) which is shown in total at right.

My assumption is that the right hand image is the entire field of view of the camera, but either to save on bandwidth, or to zoom in, only part of the image is being displayed (centered on the asteroids, like some kind of image stabilization). That is the left hand box. The right hand box shows that image's location in the full field of view.

You don't want to blow up an asteroid. The pieces will still hit earth. You don't want to miss a thing.

I refuse to believe this wasn't an overt reference to that awful scene in Armageddon with the animal crackers.

Yes you want to redirect, if that is not practical you want to blow it up into small enough fragments the atmosphere, yes that require an nuke, you still want an mostly redirect
And atmosphere is serious armor. Now it has serious political issues say you had an 200 MT blast in the Pacific but you get multiple 50 KT impacts in California.

Ahhhh, OK. So when the one on the right jumps around, is it:

  1. panning the camera?
  2. tapping the RCS to fine-tune the approach?
  3. none of the above?
