1.7 sky box

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere and was sort of surprised when I first noticed it - has anyone noticed some familiar constellations in the new sky box?

New skybox you say? Why no, I've never heard of that one before.

Galaxy Texture Map Update

The game’s galaxy cubemap has been updated in Room to Maneuver. This environment map has been carefully crafted to reflect a nicer color palette and more defined celestial objects. With double the resolution, it will be impossible not to enjoy the view while exploring Kerbin’s star system.

Sometimes its good to have some patience when reading a post.

He is saying that he noticed familiar constellations in the NEW skybox.

That means he knows its new but he wants to ask if someone else noticed what he did.

The first one that I noticed was Ursa Major... but couldn't find Ursa Minor from there. That got me looking around and I found Taurus, the Pleiades(I think - haven't examined closely), Orion and of course the Sea Gurkin. Its been a long time since I've played with a telescope but the constellations weren't where I expected them to be - either Squad shuffled things around or I've forgotten where things are. But you (5thHourseman) mention the ones you couldn't find - suggesting I've just missed any mention of it.

Edit: After looking at some star charts and the sky box I think the constellations are correct and the orientation was throwing me - that and all the stars - doesn't match our light polluted sky.

With enough random dots, you can find familiar patterns in anything.

True but in this case there are too many similarities. I find multiple constellations in the correct orientation and place. I just finished comparing an astro photo and a screen shot of the 1.7 skybox (Big Dipper in this case) - I find all the stars in the skybox in the photo. I'm guessing Squad used a digital recreation of the sky. I say recreation as I haven't found and nebula or galaxies yet.

There are quite a few real constellations in the new skybox. I labeled a few of them here:

That's a real shame.  The only place in this universe where you can see the constellations we know is on Earth.  Everywhere else, the angles are different so the patterns are, too.  Kerbin, of course, is in a totally separate universe where the fundamental forces and all the laws of physics based upon them are radically different from what we know, so would naturally have a completely different arrangement of stars, even if it was in an analogous position in its universe to where Earth is in ours.

I'd much rather the skybox look totally alien than have terrestrial constellations.
