Better stage organising in VAB

Recommended Posts

I always find it annoying to organize my staging on a craft and would like to see some improvement in this area. My main complaints are that whenever you drag an item all the other ones move around to fill up that gap, forcing you to wait a second before you can put it where you want it. Instead I think it would be better that the gap remains until you have let go of the item before everything moves as it would make organizing stages a lot quicker and less tedious. I would also like a way to group together items into one, just like how it is with symmetry, as sometimes the staging gets really long (especially with sepatrons on side boosters).

You could even make staging a whole new tab (like action groups and crew) and maybe use some color to indicate different parts of a craft (this would be especially helpful when looking at other peoples crafts to easier understand what different stages do).

I would like to see it improved as well. I'd like to see it modeled the way Adobe does in its editing software.  Each stage should have a twirl up tab that hides the contents of the folder, making it easier to scroll through the stages or easier to move something from one stage to another.  ( A huge problem when you are adding additional items like chutes and they default to places you do not want them to be.

With the latter in mind, it would also be great to lock stages so that no items will be automatically placed in them.

It would be great if the staging UI worked exactly like the action group UI.

The current setup is very frustrating, especially when you're dealing with sepratrons on a very large rocket, and hovering over their staging icon doesn't help since you can't see them light up anyway, or can't tell which ones are being highlighted.

Now,

a day I built a rocket with a lot of staging.

Rocket build time: 10 minutes

Staging: 30 minutes.

we need better staging, I don't know something like auto staging? (also if it is imprecise you can edit it really fast)

The game already does auto-staging. It's just that it doesn't really know what you actually want to do with your rocket. Because of this, it has to make a lot of assumptions, and because you can't really tell it that you want to fire the engines before the launch clamps let go, it assumes that they should both be in the same stage and it drops you onto the launchpad.

As I mentioned above, it really just comes down to making the staging easier to sort. They need a twirl-down folder option  (and possibly even the ability to make subfolders, solely for sorting) so that all your individual engines do not create a giant scrolling list.  Any video editors who work in Adobe will know this: I'd like to see it set up exactly the way the Bins are set up in the project panel in Adobe Premiere.
